    An Interview with Robert Weinberg
conducted by Leo Grin Robert Weinberg Robert Weinberg has had one of the most storied careers in all of fandom. Author of at least 16 books and editor of a staggering 120 books and anthologies, he also happens to be one of the most well-known Howard fans in the world. His Howard collection is the stuff of legend, while his many Howard books, fanzines, and articles have entertained REH’s fans for decades. There is scarcely an area of Howard fandom that doesn’t bear his mark in one form or another, and his generosity towards other Howard fans is widely known and revered. Oh yeah, he's also been the Vice President of the Horror Writers Association twice, and once won some obscure little thing called a World Fantasy Award . Then, just to prove it wasn’t a fluke the first time, he did it again. In honor of Bob’s being named Guest of Honor for Howard Days 2004 , Project Pride presents here an extremely interesting interview, covering all things Weinberg and all things Howard. Enjoy. Q: With so much to talk about, it’s hard to know where to start. So let's be real original and start at the beginning with a capsule biography. Birthplace, education, employment, family?

Weinberg considers metastasis and invasion to be the "last frontier of cancer research", since researchers know very little about how tumors manage to colonize distant sites in the body. He is focusing on a small group of transcription factors – proteins that control gene expression. These proteins, which are typically involved in embryogenesis, may contribute to a cancer’s ability to colonize distant sites in the body. Weinberg and his team are exploring the theory that tumors can resurrect the embryonic properties of these proteins and use them to seed the body with cancer cells.

March 8, 2006 Professor Robert A. Weinberg has won one of the largest prizes awarded to cancer researchers by a professional society of peers, according to the American Association for Cancer Research. He and Angela M. Hartley Brodie of the University of Maryland School of Medicine are being honored with 2006 Landon-AACR Prizes for Basic and Translational Cancer Research. Each will receive an unrestricted cash award of $200,000 and will present successive scientific lectures at the AACR annual meeting on April 3. Weinberg, a founding member of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research and MIT professor of biology affiliated with the Center for Cancer Research, will receive the fifth Kirk A. Landon-AACR Prize for Basic Cancer Research. Brodie will receive the fifth Dorothy P. Landon-AACR Prize for Translational Cancer Research. "These extraordinary scientists have spent their careers working to unravel at the molecular level some of cancer's most elusive mysteries," said Dr. Margaret Foti, chief executive officer of the AACR. "Each has spent more than 30 years in the laboratory, pursuing with relentless dedication their theories about cancer's mechanisms of invasion and progression in the complex chemistry of the human body."

Cancer Update with Robert Weinberg (broadcast Friday, October 12th, 2007)
In this segment, Ira talks with cancer researcher Robert Weinberg about what he calls the last frontier of cancer research. Weinberg has been instrumental in studies of oncogenes, genes that can spark the rapid cell multiplication associated with cancerous tumors. Now, in two studies published over the past month, Weinberg and colleagues present clues as to how tumors spread through the body. They found that microRNAs, small molecules that typically disrupt protein production by binding to the messenger RNAs that transmit DNA instructions for proteins, can cause tumors to metastasize. Could the research help curb the spread of cancer within people? We'll talk about the research. How Cancer Begins
    by Robert Weinberg
If you’re worried about getting cancer, do yourself a favor: steer clear of red meat and rich foods, and avoid cigarettes. In this lecture, Robert Weinberg provides the scientific basis for this commonplace advice, as well as a layman’s look at the genetic, biochemical and environmental factors that make good cells go bad. Normal cells are civic-minded, lining up together in a precise architecture that gives structure to body tissue. When the cell’s genes are damaged, they send out faulty instructions, turning orderly structure into a chaotic mess. This kind of injury to cells likely comes from the outside – as many as 90% of human cancers are due to bad diets and smoking. Weinberg wants to understand the specific pathways by which the cells’ enemies invade and do their damage, in hopes of then being able to halt the process and freeze a cancer’s growth. But, cautions Weinberg, better to count on prevention than a cure in the fight against cancer.
