A direct forebear of the modern Theatre of the Absurd , Wedekind employed episodic scenes, fragmented dialogue, distortion, and caricature in his dramas, which formed the transition from the realism of his age to the Expressionism of the following generation. The son of a German American father and a Swiss mother, Wedekind lived in Switzerland from 1872 to 1884, when he moved to Munich, where he remained until his death. He was successively an advertising manager, the secretary of a circus, a journalist for the satirical weekly Simplicissimus , a cabaret performer, and the producer of his own plays. WEDEKIND, FRANK
Simplicissimus. A forerunner of the expressionists, he employed grotesque fantasy and unconventional characters in order to attack the bourgeois ideals and hypocrisy of his society. Wedekind was particularly concerned with sexual themes, stressing the primacy of man's instincts. His plays include (1891, tr. The Awakening of Spring, Der Erdgeist (1895, tr. Earth Spirit, 1914), and (1903, tr. Pandora's Box, 1918). Alban Berg compiled the libretto for his opera Lulu (1934) from the latter two. See study by S. Gittleman (1969, repr. 1980). Brief biography of German expressionist frank wedekind, plus links to all of his works currently in print.
http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/clsc16.htm
Frank Wedekind In 1918, Bertolt Brecht attended the funeral of German playwright Frank Wedekind. He later wrote in his diary, "They stood perplexed in top hats, as if round the carcass of a vulture. Bewildered crows." Wedekind was a prophet in the darkness. He had come before his time. A moralist who wore the mask of an immoralist, he had been the terror of the German bourgeoisie, alternately praised for being a saint and condemned for being a devil. He did not follow any group, or subscribe to any political ideology of the day. And his expressionistic visions preceded the rise of expressionism by several decades.

FRANK WEDEKIND
THE AWAKENING OF SPRING
F RANK WEDEKIND is perhaps the most daring dramatic spirit in Germany. Coming to the fore much later than Sudermann and Hauptmann, he did not follow in their path, but set out in quest of new truths. More boldly than any other dramatist Frank Wedekind has laid bare the shams of morality in reference to sex, especially attacking the ignorance surrounding the sex life of the child and its resultant tragedies. Wedekind became widely known through his great drama "The Awakening of Spring," which he called a tragedy of childhood, dedicating the work to parents and teachers. Verily an appropriate dedication, because parents and teachers are, in relation to the child's needs, the most ignorant and mentally indolent class. Needless to say, this element entirely failed to grasp the social significance of Wedekind's work. On the contrary, they saw in it an invasion of their tradi. tional authority and an outrage on the sacred rights of parenthood. The critics also could see naught in Wedekind, except a base, perverted, almost diabolic nature bereft of all finer feeling. But professional critics seldom see below the surface; else they would discover beneath the grin and satire of Frank Wedekind a sensitive soul, deeply stirred by the heart- rending tragedies about him. Stirred and grieved especially by the misery and torture of the child,- the helpless victim unable to explain the forces germinating in its nature, often crushed and destroyed by mock modesty, sham decencies, and the complacent morality that greet its blind gropings.

18. Lulu: Frank Wedekind
of his principal works.......Biography of wedekind showing him in the context of his times.
http://www.geocities.com/al6an6erg/lulu1.html
Frank Wedekind
Frank Wedekind is the author of the Lulu plays and the founder of German Expressionist drama. He was born in Hanover, Germany on 24 July 1864. His father, Dr. Friedrich Wilhelm Wedekind, had fled Germany after the 1848 revolution and had settled and worked as a doctor in San Francisco. There he met a German-born opera singer, Emilie Kammerer. The two married in 1862 and returned to Germany just before the birth of their second child, Benjamin Franklin (Frank) Wedekind.
Wedekind, of course, would come to be deeply involved in literature, but earlier in his life he developed musical abilities. This may not be surprising, considering the musicality of his family: his mother, as mentioned, was an opera singer, and his sister Erika became well known as a coloratura soprano. Wedekind’s musical talents can perhaps be inferred from his studies: “as a schoolboy he learned the guitar and the flute and, later, the violin, piano and mandolin” (Jarman 13).
Wedekind’s father planned a legal career for his son, and in 1884 Wedekind moved from Switzerland, where his family at that time lived, to Munich to begin his studies. Munich was at that time the center of the literary avant-garde, home to the followers of Zola and the pre-cursors of Naturalist drama. Wedekind, by this time an aspiring writer, became involved with this community, though he immediately differentiated himself from it. He felt that the artist should not be “scientifically objective” about the society he depicts, as advocated by the Naturalists, but instead totally involved in it.

FRANK WEDEKIND (1864-1918) The following biography was originally published in The Continental Drama of Today. Barrett H. Clark. New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1914. pp. 115-6. Frank Wedekind was born in Hanover in 1864. He was forced to study law, though his natural inclination was for writing, which he found time at an early age to do. In Zurich, where he later continued his studies, he came into contact with the "Moderns," among them Hauptmann and Strindberg . In 1888, after the death of his father, Wedekind went to Munich, and thence visited London, Paris, and all the centers of European culture, all the sinks of its perversity and crookedness. He squandered his money and his beliefs recklessly. In 1891 he returned again to Munich. A few years later he was imprisoned for was soon released and became a vaudeville performer, then acted in his own plays, and eventually settled in Munich, after his marriage in 1908. [He would remain there until his death in 1918]. Wedekind is of no school, he recognizes no established laws, he sets at defiance morality and accepted belief; some of his plays contain scenes that "would sicken a police reporter," while the most innocuous often contain scenes that are sickeningly brutal. Yet withal, he is a genius if by that term we mean one who has the art of presenting life and character, of creating illusion, one capable at times of producing a thing of power and beauty. If this is granted, then Wedekind is an exceptional genius. His unparalleled audacity, his reckless iconoclasm, his absolute disregard for accepted forms in art, cannot fail to command respect. He has been well called a great Denier ... an inspired pessimist.

Frank Wedekind's plays Erdgeist (1895) and (1904) set a new standard for dramatic representation and were influential in determining the form of contemporary productions as well as later Expressionist theater. Wedekind's innovative use of language, his themes of sexual expressivity and circus-like sensationalism, and above all his focus on the bourgeois framework of Germany work together in the plays to produce a complex, sometimes ambivalent commentary on Wilhelmine social reality. In his 1929 film adaptation of the Lulu femme fatale , a "New Woman," or something else entirely, she does mirror the contemporary question of gender construction and societal constraints. As evidenced in the final scene the ambivalence underlying not only Lulu's fate, but the character of her killer as well Pabst's conceptualization of Lulu is crucially different from that of Wedekind. Certainly the time difference between the drama and film plays a major part in explaining this contrast, but it may be possible, based on the film's self-reflexivity and Lulu's position as the ultimate actress, to seek a "filmic" justification as well.
When they first appeared in the 1890's, Wedekind's
