Oldest Webster Family
- The progenitor of the oldest, and probably the most numerous family in America, bearing the name of Webster, was John Webster of Warwickshire [believed to actually be Cossington], England. He came to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in a year not certainly known, but, by tradition, understood to have been about 1630-33. He removed from Newtowne, now Cambridge, Massachusetts, to the present site of Hartford, Connecticut, in 1636, presumably with the Rev. Thomas Hooker and his historic party. Hartford, Connecticut - Hartford was then known by its Indian name, Suckiaug meaning "black earth," possibly from the dark rich soil of its fertile meadows and cultivated fields, portions of the country even then being under the rough tillage of the savages. The South Side - John Webster located on the south side of Little River, a small stream flowing into the Connecticut from the west, and which, from the founding of the Colony, has divided the town into two unequal parts, the south side never quite equaling the north in population. In the beginning, it formed the boundary between two "plantations" into which the community was divided and this dual feature, with separate meetings, independent books, and recognition in the town votes, - continued even after the legal organization of the town was effected.

Webster J (Julie) Latest Paper: J Acoust Soc Am. 2007 Nov ;122 (5):2985 18189770 Simple calculation models for wind noise spectral contributions in outdoor turbulent flows. [My paper] Jiao Yu Jeremy Webster Richard Raspet We have previously reported on the predictions of the stagnation pressure fluctuations, turbulence-turbulence interaction pressure fluctuations and turbulence-mean shear interaction pressure fluctuations in outdoor turbulent flows [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 120(5), 3032 (2006)]. The predictions of these contributions to the full pressure spectrum involve double integrals and are computationally complex. In this talk, we present simple algebraic fits to the predictions, and use these fits to discuss dominant terms under atmospheric conditions different from the measurement conditions reported earlier. Turbulence percentage and scale are shown to be the determining factor influencing the relative contributions to the wind noise outdoors. The simple calculation models provide a quick way to predict wind noise contributions from wind velocity measurements. [Research supported by the U.S. Army TACOM-ARDEC at Picatinny Arsenal, NJ.].

On the wild benefit of nature, live
Happier than we; for they may choose their mates,
And carol their sweet pleasures to the spring."
The Duchess of Malfi
The Duchess of Malfi: Character Summary
A widow, the duchess rules her duchy alone. Lonely and in love, she secretly marries her steward Antonio. This is done in a hand-fast marriage witnessed by Cariola, the Duchess' hand-maiden. By choosing to marry Antonio in secret, the Duchess neglects her duty to her people. When she begins getting pregnant and giving birth, her people denounce her as a strumpet. They then lose their respect for their leader. The pilgrims in Act 4 (when the Duchess and her family are in Loreto at the religous shrine) are the only disinterested parties in the play. They are also the only disinterested commoners.

"That's the greatest torture souls feel in hell,
In hell: that they must live, and cannot die."
The Duchess of Malfi
Women as Rulers
Women rulers and the circumstances they deal with are very much unlike men rulers and their situations. The women must worry about society's propensities, their own feelings, and the welfare of their people. It is much more difficult to be a woman in power than to be a man in power. The choices women rulers make cannot be only for themselves, and one wrong decision can spell disaster.

    Exciting New Changes Happening in 2008 Application forms and information packages for amateur pilots wishing to compete in the 2008 Webster Memorial Trophy Competition are expected to be available for downloading in English and French by the end of January from this web site. There will be a small administration fee for all competitors of $25 which is part of the application process. This year a number of dramatic changes to the programme are in effect which will make entry to the competition easier and less expensive. In the past, the practice was to have only one Webster Flight Test Examiner for each of the nine Regions, the rationale being that all flight tests in a Region would have a consistency in marking. It was recognized that this caused a very difficult situation for many pilots wishing to compete, as it often meant travelling great distances and incurring high expense in order to reach a Regional examiner. Webster is intended to be a national competition for amateur aeroplane pilots and open to everyone, therefore from this point on

        • UK Friday, 13 January 2006 John Webster, advertising executive: born Paris 17 December 1934; founding partner, Boase Massimi Pollitt (BMP, later DDB London) 1968, creative director 1971-80, executive creative director 1980-2006; married (three children); died Barnet, Hertfordshire 6 January 2006. John Webster was the best television commercials creator in Britain when Britain was the best in the world - throughout the Seventies and Eighties. He won more awards than any writer of TV advertising in Europe, maybe the world. A generation grew up with his advertising on their lips: the Smash Martians, old Arkwright and then Jack Dee for John Smith's Bitter, the Sugar Puffs Honey Monster, memorable work for The Guardian, the Hofmeister bear and more recently, the "nice guy" footballer Gary Lineker stealing Walkers crisps. With colleagues, Webster founded the advertising agency Boase Massimi Pollitt (BMP) in 1968. The first client was a Cadbury's brand of instant mashed potato called Smash. Webster's series of Smash commercials with metal Martians laughing at the idiocy of humans - voted in 2000 in a Campaign magazine poll the best advertising of the century - gave the agency an early fame.

      LL the flowers of the spring
      Meet to perfume our burying;
      These have but their growing prime,
      And man does flourish but his time:
      Survey our progress from our birth;
      We are set, we grow, we turn to earth.
      Courts adieu, and all delights,
      All bewitching appetites!
      Sweetest breath and clearest eye,
      Like perfumes, go out and die;
      And consequently this is done
      As shadows wait upon the sun.
      Vain ambition of kings
      Who seek by trophies and dead things
      To leave a living name behind,
      And weave but nets to catch the wind.
