http://www.z9m9z.demon.co.uk/david.htm
Who is David Weber? After the demise of Doc Smith, there was very little in the way of good space opera being written. The tendency in SF seemed to lean towards less epic stories, describing the lives of people with no chance of significantly affecting the course of history. Stories are frequently set on the Earth in the near future, with space travel unimportant or not present. Where are the Galactic Empires? The clash of thousands of star ships? The beams and shields and the heroes? Well, they're just starting to return. One or two authors are now writing good space opera again; Elizabeth Moon's Herris Serrano series (and the excellent spin-off, Once a Hero ) are perhaps not quite as epic as the Smith stories, but certainly qualifiers. The crown, though, must go to David Weber; fitting, as he started out reading the Smith books. David has written a large number of epic-scale space opera novels (plus two fantasy novels, innumerable technical essays on the premises of his universes, and a strategy board game). There are two main series, the Dahak series and the Honor Harrington series, as well as a currently stand-alone novel

she takes a licking but keeps on ticking Have you seen our weblog or our monthly book review? Weber is the author of some of the more interesting space opera I've read in the last few years. He's not top-tier Lois McMaster Bujold , for example, is much better but he's consistent. He's best known for his Honor Harrington series, which can partially (but inadequately) be described as "Horatio Hornblower in Space". Honor Harrington is a Captain in the Royal Navy of the Star Kingdom of Manticore, which is involved in occasional wars and skirmishes with another federation of star systems vaguely reminiscent of France. The reviews listed below have considerably more information, so I won't repeat it again here. He has another, shorter, series which begins with the book Mutineers' Moon . The reviews have quite a lot in them, so I'll only say that it's the most outrageous display of super-science I've seen since I read E.E. Smith's Skylark series.

The key to success and happiness is within you. In 2003, spirit guides calling themselves The Rishis (pronounced "The ReeShees") began communicating with me. Their message was simple yet profound — God (or universal energy) is constantly flowing through you, giving you unlimited power to accomplish anything. Problems in life are caused by blockages to that flow. Through The Rishis, you can find your flow, eliminate the overwhelm and other factors holding you back, and become the powerful and successful person you were always meant to be! Whatever the title or geographical scope of my course, however, the issues remained the same: Spanish exploration; Indians' discoveries of Spaniards; Spanish efforts to convert Indians and use their labor; Indian resistance, accommodation, or assimilation; Spanish struggles with Indians who refused to submit; the Spanish imperial economy; Spanish competition with England, France, Russia, and the United States for control of the continent and its native populations; and the nature of Spanish frontier institutions and society in comparative perspective.
My students' preconceptions about Spaniards have also remained constant. History teachers at all levels encounter these preconceptions when the subject of Spain in America arises. American students, even those of Hispanic descent, know about Spaniards' extraordinary cruelty toward Indians. But how cruel were Spaniards? By whose standards do we judge them? Which Spaniards, priests or conquistadores? Spaniards of which era, the late medieval conquistadores or the enlightened bureaucrats of the late eighteenth century?
Our students also imagine the Spanish Borderlands as a place where Spanish men came to find gold and silver and to live without work by exploiting Indian labor. Spanish men, according to the conventional wisdom, arrived without women but soon married or cohabited with Indian women. This image contrasts sharply with our students' image of the English-American past, in which Englishmen in search of religious freedom fled to America with their families and took up farming with their own hands rather than exploiting the natives. How much truth do these antipodal stereotypes contain?
