For Links to Waugh on the net: Web Counter notes hit number OVERVIEW: An 'Alternative Ending' offers a happier version of events. Tony returns to find Hetton entirely redecorated in his absence and to be met by a repentant Brenda... DETAIL: In Black Mischief, implicitly Waugh says to his readers: "You liberals, colonialists, and decent agnostic pragmatistsyou laugh at my jokes, and are excited like me by wealth, sex, barbarity, and powerbut can you face the implications, for society and for yourselves, of identifying with Basil Seal and recognizing him as Everyman? If you cannot, then perhaps I have resources you lack. However, I leave it to you to find out what they are." Waugh's next novel, A Handful of Dust, makes essentially the same points by exactly opposite means. It too mingles an English upper-class world with that of a primitive people, but in proportions that reverse those of Black Mischief. Like, Basil, its hero Tony Last, is the only character to unite the two worlds; but unlike Basil he is naive, honorable, and innocent, the creature, not the maker, of circumstance. Yet he is a universal figure, too, in his fashion. What sort of world is it, the reader asks, in which such decency can end up as wretchedly as Tony does? And the answer, of course, is, the same sort of world as that in which a man like Basil Seal can flourish a world comprehensively in need of redemption. Begin the Begin

  • Evelyn Waugh 1903–-1966
(Full name Evelyn Arthur St. John Waugh) English novelist, short story writer, travel writer, essayist, poet, critic, biographer, and journalist.
    INTRODUCTION
Evelyn Waugh is considered by many scholars to be one of the most talented and significant British writers of the twentieth century. Waugh is primarily known for his novels such as Brideshead Revisited and The Loved One, but also earned acclaim for his short stories. Waugh's novella, Decline and Fall, is his best-known work of short fiction.
    Biographical Information
Waugh was born in 1903 in Hampstead, London, to a literary family. His father, Arthur, was an editor and publisher; his older brother, Alec, also became a novelist. Waugh began attending Oxford in 1921 and started writing stories for literary magazines. The author, however, was forced to leave Oxford in 1924 without earning a degree. Following his departure from Oxford, Waugh taught briefly in private schools and also worked for awhile as a journalist for the Daily Express.

    Evelyn Waugh: September 27, 1944
    Darling Laura,
There was a great dinner party two nights ago in honour of an exchange of decorations with the Russians. It was midnight before the presentations began. Then at two, when I was a little weary of speeches in a strange tongue, a theatrical entertainment began of patriotic recitations, plays, and songs until four o'clock. As we are in the habit of going to bed sharp at ten o'clock, it was an unusual strain.
Today has lasted about a week already and it is only 4.15 pm. We are like Chekhov characters.
At this moment a deputation of distressed jews has arrived. They come nearly every day. Randolph takes the sort of interest in them that Herberts take in Albanians. I think I prefer the Herbert interest.
There is also a wandering musician with an inflated pig's carcass playing jigs like a Highlander.
    All my love
    Evelyn

Brideshead Revisited presents a more nostalgic story based on the main characters memories of a wealthy English Catholic family he befriended before World War II. In an England where most people are Protestant, being Catholic makes the familydespite their land ownership and high social statusa minority, subject to a degree of prejudice. Many of the characters and events in the novel reflect Waughs life when he was in school and later as an adult. ... Order Brideshead Revisited Order other books by Waugh, Evelyn

Penguin 1963 A book review by Danny Yee Helena , a "biography" of Constantine's mother, is a failure as a historical novel. For one thing, it is tendentiously Christian (Catholic), pushing twentieth century parodies of Arianism and gnosticism back into the fourth century as straw-men. More tellingly, it conveys no feel for the period and doesn't offer much in the way of humour to compensate. This is not one of Evelyn Waugh's better novels. 18 May 1995

Evelyn Waugh on the varied reputation of Paris
"The characteristic thing about Paris is not so much the extent though that is vast as the overwhelming variety of its reputation. It has become so overlaid with successive plasterings of paste and proclamation that it has come to resemble those rotten old houses one sometimes sees during their demolition, whose crumbling frame of walls is only held together by the solid strata of wallpapers. "What, after all these years, can we say about Paris? There is a word, 'bogus', which I have heard used a great deal with various and often inconsistent implications. It seems to me that this scrap of jargon, in every gradation of meaning, every innuendo, every allusion and perversion and 'bluff' it is capable of bearing, gives a very adequate expression of the essence of modern Paris. "Paris is bogus in its lack of genuine nationality. No one can feel a foreigner in Monte Carlo, but Paris is cosmopolitan in the diametrically opposite sense, that it makes everyone a foreigner."

Evelyn Waugh (1903-1966) was born in Hampstead, England, into a family of publishers and writers. He was educated at Lancing and at Hertford College, Oxford, where he majored in journalism and modern history. Waugh's first book, A Life of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, was published in 1928. Soon afterward his first novel, Decline and Fall, appeared and his career was sensationally launched. In fifteen novels of cunning construction and lapidary eloquence, Time summarized later, Evelyn Waugh developed a wickedly hilarious yet fundamentally religious assault on a century that, in his opinion, had ripped up the nourishing taproot of tradition and let wither all the dear things of the world. Apart from his novels, Waugh also wrote several acclaimed travel books, two additional biographies, and an autobiography, A Little Learning. $18,500.00 WAUGH, Evelyn.
