Waugh, Evelyn (1903-1966) Evelyn Waugh poses a paradox for gay readers. He moved somewhat freely in homosexual circles while having at least three affairs at Oxford in the early 1920s, then married, fathered six children, and apparently remained heterosexual. He created in Charles Ryder and Sebastian Flyte of Brideshead Revisited (1945) a moving tribute to homoeroticism yet subjected other figures in his works to archly homophobic contempt. Sponsor Message.
His conversion to a deeply felt, ardently held Catholicism and his inability to be other than nostalgic about his youth explain much of this paradox. In 1928, he married Evelyn Gardiner and after a Mediterranean cruise, settled in London to write. They divorced in 1930, and their marriage was annulled in 1936, the year before he married Laura Herbert and settled first in Gloucestershire, then in Somerset. Between 1928 and 1942, Waugh established himself as one of the most trenchant and able satirists of the world of the "Bright Young Things," as the British called their "Lost Generation." He savaged this world in

Marudhan n 1936, when Italian troops re-entered Abyssinia (Ethiopia), the world assumed that Italy, unable to comprehend its earlier defeat in the hands of Abyssinians in the 1890s, was seeking revenge. The invasion, however, not only turned a crucial page of Abyssinian history, but also fuelled the onset of World War II.
The history of the African continent is the history of exploitation, slavery, invasion and affliction. The land long served as an uncomplaining playground for political theories like imperialism, and silently accepted scars left by the global gamemasters. On numberless occasions, Africa's resources, dignity and fragile boundaries were assaulted with little or no restraint.
The spirit of Africa is a wounded one. Evelyn Waugh writes: "No one can doubt that an immense amount of avoidable suffering has been caused, and that the ultimate consequences may be of world-wide effect". The Italian invasion that

Welcome
So, what's an anecdote anyway? Webster says that an anecdote is "a usually short narrative of an interesting, amusing, or biographical incident." Clifton Fadiman tells us that a "first-rate anecdote should be more than merely a good saying" or the description of an eccentric moment in an individual's life. D'Israeli called anecdotes "minute notices of human nature and of human learning." A "good" anecdote is often a mini-drama that helps us to reflect on our own lives as we peek into the lives of those more famous. However you define them, I hope that when you read the anecdotes you find here you'll be both amused and enlightened. Sources
Where did these anecdotes come from? Most of the anecdotes on these pages come from historical records, newspapers, biographies, and autobiographies. Some are word-of-mouth accounts from friends or acquaintances of the person about whom the anecdote is told. Find out more.

Evelyn Waugh
Profile
Evelyn Arthur St. John Waugh, novelist and journalist, was born in West Hampstead, London. His father was Arthur Waugh, a publisher and literary critic. Evelyn was educated at Lancing College, West Sussex and at Hertford College, Oxford, where he read modern history. His social activites took precedence over his academic studies. He took several teaching jobs which laid the foundations for his first novel, Decline and fall , which was published in 1928. The same year he married but was divorced within two years. He converted to Roman Catholicism, being received into the church in 1930, and his faith influenced much of his subsequent writing. He travelled widely in Europe, Near East, Africa, and America and wrote of his experiences pieces for journals. He covered the Italian invasion of Abyssinia in 1936. In 1937 he married again, to Laura Herbert and the couple went to live in Gloucestershire. He served in the Royal Marines during World War II and was a member of the British Military Mission to Yugoslavia in 1944. After the war he and his wife settled in Somerset and raised a large family. The first volume of a projected autobiography, entitled A little learning , appeared in 1964. He died on April 10, 1966 at Combe Florey, Somerset.

Magazine Services ND Alumni Home ... Autumn 2003 Issue Literary Scamp Evelyn Waugh By Arthur Jones It was February 24, 1949. A bitter winter rain battered the Notre Dame campus. Unconcernedly striding through it, despite water streaming over the brim of his bowler hat and saturating his serviceable tweed coat, was Evelyn Waugh (pronounced EVE-lin war). Writer of the U.S. best sellers Brideshead Revisited and The Loved One (1948), Waugh had arrived first-class to examine the church of immigrant Catholic Americans who had made the same trip from Europe traveling steerage. During his two-part winter of 1948-49 reporting trip for Life magazine, it is unlikely Waugh actually met an immigrant, unless one happened to wait on him in a restaurant or on a train.
