Gacy, John
He was known as "Pogo the Clown," and would perform at children's birthday parties. On the other hand, he was convicted of raping, torturing, and killing thirty-three young men and boys, a classic Pedophile and Sexual Sadist according to DSM-IV criteria. Gacy was first suspected in 1978 after the disappearance of Robert Piest. He was then put under police surveillance, which made him very uncomfortable - to the point where he was even threatening a law suit against the police. Nevertheless, police kept up the surveillance. Finally, after questioning some of Gacy's employees and finding that he propositioned them for sexual favors, police decided to search his house. As the police noticed a strange smell in his house, Gacy admitted to killing one of his homosexual partners four years earlier in self defense and then putting his body in the crawl space of his house. He then confessed to killing almost 3 dozen people, which he had stored under the floor boards and in the crawl space.

For the past thirty two years I have made frames for people who collect, sell and make photography. During the seventies my workshop was located in Los Angeles on Melrose Avenue. I recall an Edward Steichen show at the G.Ray Hawkins Gallery, a few doors away, which was framed in period frames-all different. It was quite rare for a gallery to pay such particular attention to frames. G. Ray presented many similar exhibits of Umbo, Paul Outerbridge, Helmut Hewton and Man Ray all of whom were presented with frames made in my workshop.
David Fahey of Fahey/Klein Gallery in Los Angeles has presented many exhibits where no detail is overlooked-especially framing. The photographs of Joel-Peter Witkin, Albert Watson, Sheila Metzner, Herb Ritts, Jan Groover, Peter Lindbergh, David Bailey, and Horst have all been exhibited with our frames. Several years ago, under the guidance of Richard Gere, a portfolio for Tibet House of 24 photographers was framed and exhibited throughout the states.
In 1996 the workshop designed and made no less than ten exhibits of photography for Albert Watson, Richard Gere, Peter Lindbergh, Greg Gorman and a large retrospective for Herb Ritts at the Museum of Fine Arts-Boston (which will tour world-wide in two dozen traveling cases).

Below is a total list of students known to have attended Downhills. The major source for this information has been the records held in the Bruce Castle Museum in Tottenham. This information stops at 1964, after which the school ceased to exist. Significant contributions have been received from former students. Names are listed by their year of entry into the first year, that way individuals are kept with their contemporaries. Students marked with an asterisk are subscribed to Friendsreunited or known to us. Please peruse this list and let us know if there are errors.
