Sheila Watson
Sheila Watson is best known for her modernist novel, The Double Hook . With her husband, poet Wilfred Watson, she founded the literary magazine White Pelican in Edmonton where they both taught English at the University of Alberta and were very popular professors. Sheila was born Sheila Martin Doherty in New Westminster, British Columbia in 1909. She attended schools run by the Sisters of St. Anne. She earned a B.A. , Honours in English (1931) from the University of British Columbia, an Academic Teaching Certificate (1932) and an M.A. (1933) with a thesis on Addison and Steele. During the next few years Sheila Doherty taught elementary school in a number of rural schools in British Columbia, including Dog Creek, the Cariboo, the inspiration for Deep Hollow Creek . In 1941 she married Wilfred Watson and after the Second World War she taught in Toronto, at U.B.C. and at Powell River, B.C. During 1951 and '52 she lived in Calgary where she completed The Double Hook . For the next two years she lived in Edmonton and France. In 1957 she undertook doctoral studies at the University of Toronto and produced a thesis on Wyndham Lewis under the direction of Marshall McLuhan. In 1959 The Double Hook was published and soon became an important work. She was appointed to the faculty at the University of Alberta in 1961 and completed her dissertation

Sheila Watson's first published novel, The Double Hook Set in B.C.'s Cariboo country (where the author taught early in her life), the story involves Stella, a young teacher, as she slowly becomes part of this small, isolated community. She senses the tensions that animate the various relationships and the ripple effect on other, peripheral characters. Central to the plot is the bitterness between Mamie and her sister-in-law, Rose. Mamie considers herself the sole person of taste and culture in this remote outpost and considers Rose beneath contempt. A boarder at Rose's, Stella moves (with her horse, Button, and her dog, Juno) to her own cabin, where she ponders the life she observes around her as she reads her literary classics. The story is often enigmatic: for example, the reader is not clearly told why Stella remains or the reason for the Farishes' departure. Like The Double Hook , this work is strong in atmosphere, almost brooding, reflecting the austere beauty of the land, which is alluring despite its harsh climate and forbidding terrain.

Research interests
I am interested in the way in which history in museums contributes to identity and how museums are spaces in which identitites are made, controlled, reinforced and manipulated. I am undertaking research into the way in which national and local history is used to develop the sense of communities, national, local and regional and how senses of place are created within the museum arena. I am interested in the intangible and how the museum deals with concepts such as myth and memory.
Teaching I am currently responsible for teaching sessions on the campus based MA in Museum Studeis and MA in Art Gallery Studies. My lectures and workshops include modern museum contexts, enquiry services, musems and communities, intangibles, oral history and reminiscence in the museum. I run the history special option.

Part 3: A Whitechapel Digression
April 26, 1937
Roderick returns in the morning, having been out in Springfield where his son Marcus has been hospitalized following a stabbing. The police have a suspect, William Mitchell, in custody, as Marcus was found in William's apartment and William was the only one there when the police broke down the door. A visit to Marcus and then to William suggest with aura-sight that Marcus is trapped in a dream world of some sort, and he can only be rescued by people going in after him. Also, depending on the power of the dream in question, having a bunch of people together to anchor each other is good, to prevent them from being sucked into the dream without much personal volition. William says that he and Marcus were taking some drugs, which are in the sugar tin. Roderick contacts the Valiants, as he thinks he'll need help breaking and entering into William's flat, and then to get into the dream world to rescue Marcus. Eddie is dubious as to whether he can help with the dream world part. Dr. Schreber is also contacted; Roderick arranges to go to Arkham, where Gerti and Junior are also heading due to the previous night's dream where Junior scratched his face. Roderick isn't able to tell anything about Junior's aura, but psychometry on the snake scale says it belongs to a greedy / jealous / insane woman. Roderick remembers some stuff about face dancers when the scars are described to him. The first thing you do to become a face dancer is take your own face off and put it back on. Apparently they kill their teachers to take their faces, so their teachers can live forever. And they have life energy to some extent based on the faces they've taken, so they may be harder to kill than normal people. Snakes are traditional creatures to take the faces of, because snakes already shed their skins...
