MOUSEBENDER : I was sitting in the public library in Thurmond Street just now, skimming through Rogue Herries by Horace Walpole, when suddenly I came over all peckish.
    WENSLEYDALE : Peckish, sir?
    MOUSEBENDER : Esurient.
    WENSLEYDALE : Eh?
MOUSEBENDER : Eee, I were all 'ungry, like! WENSLEYDALE : Oh, hungry. MOUSEBENDER : In a nutshell. So I thought to myself "a little fermented curd will do the trick." So I curtailed my Walpolling activities, sallied forth and infiltrated your place of purveyance to negotiate the vending of some cheesy comestibles. WENSLEYDALE : Come again? MOUSEBENDER : I want to buy some cheese! "Monty Python's Flying Circus" Not a tribute to Horace Walpole exactly (in fact, as Tim Dixon of Edmonton, Alberta, has reminded me, Rogue Herries is not by Horace Walpole at all but rather by Hugh Walpole). Yet the eighteenth-century earl would probably not have felt out of place in this sketch, for the Pythons continue a peculiar strain of British tradition distinguished by absurdity, ridicule, wordplay, wit, wickedness, and plain madness (not to mention cheesiness) that unquestionably reached one of its peaks in these extraordinary (and virtually unknown, even in England)

Executive summary: Wrote the first Gothic novel Horace (or Horatio) Walpole, English politician and man of letters, 4th Earl of Orford a title to which he only succeeded at the end of his life, and by which he is little known was born in Arlington Street, London, on the 24th of September 1717. He was the youngest of the five children of the 1st Earl of Orford (Sir Robert Walpole ) by Catherine Shorter, but by some of the scandal-mongers of a later age, Carr, Lord Hervey, half-brother of John, Lord Hervey, afterwards second Earl of Bristol, has been called his father. If this unlikely rumor be correct, no such suspicion ever entered into the mind of Horace Walpole. To his mother he erected a monument, with an inscription couched in terms of sincere affection, in the chapel of Henry VII in Westminster Abbey, and from the beginning to the end of his public life his sarcasms never spared the Newcastles and the Hardwickes, who had shown, as he thought, lukewarmness in support of his father's ministry. On the 26th of April 1727 he was sent to Eton, where he formed what was known as the "Quadruple Alliance" with

Walpole, Horace (1717-1797) Horace Walpole was the youngest child of one of the most powerful political figures of the eighteenth century and his wealthy and beautiful wife. The great Sir Robert Walpole, considered by many to be the first "prime" minister, ran English government for a generation. Horace hated him as much as he loved the mother whom he saw offended by his father's infidelities. His parentage, nevertheless, gave him a certain stature and sense of self-importance that never left him. At ten, Walpole was sent to Eton College, where he became part of the "Quadruple Alliance" of sensitive literary friends, which included Thomas Gray, the most popular poet of the century, and Richard West, a sensitive and inverted young writer who died in his twenties and was the cause of a deeply moving series of letters and poems between Walpole and Gray.
