Edmund Waller, Poet and Politician Location: Buckinghamshire A celebration of the quad centenary of the birth of Edmund Waller, poet and politician, is being held at St. Mary and All Saints Church in Beaconsfield from 8th - 10th September 2006. Who was Edmund Waller? Edmund Waller is famed for his poetry, and also his political activity. He became the member of parliament for Amersham at the age of 18. No other poet in our history was actively involved in politics for so long a time. In his own day and for a hundred years after his death he was one of England’s most admired poets. He later gained a reputation as a sycophant to both the Stuart kings and to Cromwell, of which he cannot be wholly acquitted, but he was a consistent supporter of moderation in politics and toleration in religion - qualities which we mostly admire. His life spanned the years of greatest turbulence in English history since the early Middle Ages - the Civil War, the execution of the King in 1649, the Commonwealth and Cromwell’s Protectorate, the Restoration of 1660 when Charles II was welcomed back.

More interesting information about Ubin from Edmund Waller's book "Landscape Planning in Singapore":
    Excerpts from Waller (2001)
"The low lying mangrove swamps have been reclaimed from time to time for prawn farms. Traditionally, sea water is controlled by sluices in such a way that salt water containing natural prawn fry is impounded until the prawns are ready for harvesting. Large immediate earth berms (mounds) are sometimes used to contain the sea water and these often support a mangrove flora, especially if abandoned. They are also burrowed into by mud lobsters, which can cause leakage. It is considered important to prevent fresh water streams entering the prawn ponds because they might dilute the salt content to the detriment of the prawns. Therefore one often finds such streams carefully separated from the ponds but running alongside them.

Waller was born in Coleshill, Buckinghamshire, and studied at Cambridge and Lincoln's Inn. He was member of Parliament successively for Ilchester, Chipping Wycombe, and Amersham, and in 1640 sat in the Long Parliament . He was at heart a Royalist, and plotted to seize London for Charles I, for which he was arrested 1643, fined, and banished abroad. He was, however, pardoned 1651 by Cromwell's influence, and published verses praising Cromwell 1655. He also wrote poems of rejoicing on Cromwell's death 1658, and in 1660 published To the King, upon his Majesty's Happy Return hut(1)

    Plants on Ubin
Yet another informative extract from Edmund Waller (2001) "Landscape Planning in Singapore".
With regard to flora, the human interference on Pulau Ubin has led to semi-natural vegetation dominated by relatively few early successional species and 21% of alien species.
The Ubin flora represents about one eighth of the total flora recorded for Singapore and is made up largely of common weed, secondary forest and mangrove species.
