He was the eldest son of Robert Waller of Coleshill Herts , and Anne Hampden, his wife; thus he was first cousin to John Hampden . Early in his childhood his father moved the family to Beaconsfield . Of Waller's early education all we know is his own account that he "was bred under several ill, dull and ignorant schoolmasters, until he went to Mr Dobson at Wycombe , who was a good schoolmaster and had been an Eton scholar." Robert Waller died in 1616, and Anne, a lady of rare force of character, sent him to Eton and to the University of Cambridge . He was admitted a fellow-commoner of King's College, Cambridge on March 22 , he left without a degree.

English poet. Waller's sympathies moved from Parliament to king during the political turmoil of the 1640s, and he was arrested for his part in a plot to establish London as a royal stronghold. By betraying his colleagues and by lavish bribes, he avoided death. He later wrote poetic tributes to both Oliver Cromwell (1655) and Charles II (1660). Rejecting the dense intellectual verse of Metaphysical poetry , he adopted generalizing statement, easy associative development, and urbane social comment. With his emphasis on definitive phrasing through inversion and balance, he prepared the way for the emergence of the heroic couplet. By the end of the 17th century the heroic couplet was the dominant form of English poetry. Waller's lyrics include the famous Go, lovely Rose! document.writeln(AAMB2); Images and Media: More on "Edmund Waller" from Britannica Concise Cavalier poets - Group of English gentlemen poets who were Cavaliers (supporters of Charles I during the English Civil Wars).

A Panegyrick to My Lord Protector, of the present greatness and joynt interest of His Highness, and this nation in 1652. When it was published in 1655, he was criticized for betraying his royalist convictions. Waller also wrote an elegy upon Cromwell's death: Upon the Late Storme and of the death of His Highnesse ensuing the same, by Mr. Waller (1658). In 1660, when Charles II returned and the monarchy was restored, he published a poem praising the monarch, To the King, upon His Majesties happy return (1660). Waller again took a seat in Parliament in 1661. During this period Waller published two important works, On the Park at St. Jamese's (1660) and Instructions to a painter, for the drawing of a picture on the state and posture of the English forces at sea, under the command of His Royal Highness in the conclusion of the year 1664 (1665). Toward the end of his life, Waller lived on his estates in Buckinghamshire and wrote spiritual poetry. He died at his birthplace, Coleshill, in 1687.

REFERENCE LINKS PRINT EMAIL Waller, Edmund Waller, Edmund (1606-1687), was an English poet. He perfected an even-flowing form of verse, written mostly in iambic pentameter couplets. This form had a great influence on the poetry of the Augustan Age of English literature in the early 1700's. Waller's poems include panegyrics (poems of praise) to public figures, as well as courtly love lyrics. All his work was smooth and refined. Most of Waller's poetry emphasized the elegant features of civilized life. Perhaps his best-known lyric is "Go, lovely rose" (1655). Waller was born into a wealthy country family of what is now Buckinghamshire. He suffered exile for his support of the king during the Puritan revolution, but was then pardoned by Parliament in 1651. Waller remained in favor with the court after the Restoration in 1660.

Waller was elected to parliament at the early age of sixteen, and wrote his first verse at the age of nineteen. He gained a reputation as an orator. Although he was committed to remaining politically moderate he found himself involved in a plot that was uncovered and Waller was fined, imprisoned and finally exiled from Britain. Eventually he was allowed back into the country returned to parliament. Much of Waller's verse consisted of praise for Sacharissa, a name he used for Lady Dorothy Sidney whom he courted unsuccessfully. Today he is best known for On a Girdle and Go Lovely Rose. His most remembered achievement is his perfection of the heroic couplet.
