Lansac, Regis: Portrait of Margaret Walker, 1982 Research Materials Other Resources Margaret Walker, born in Bendigo, Victoria, was first inspired by dance when she went to a Melbourne performance by the visiting Covent Garden Russian Ballet in 1939. The direction of her life changed dramatically as a result of her visit to the theatre. Walker, a pharmacy student at the time, started taking ballet classes with Edouard Borovansky and his wife Xenia. Dance was to occupy Walker's life for the next five decades until her death in 1996. Walker eventually, however, opted to devote her energies to a dance form that seemed to her more egalitarian than ballet. She became involved with a group of activists in post-war Melbourne whose political beliefs were the driving force behind their art making. Walker joined the peace movement and the Communist Party and Melbourne's New Theatre became the focus of her activities. She became a passionate pioneer of folk and character dance in Australia and in 1967 established Dance Concert a professional performing group that aimed to preserve the dances of Australia and other countries. It was active until 1977. Later, she established the Margaret Walker Folk Dance Centre for the resourcing, teaching and demonstration of folk dance. Throughout her life she supported the idea that every child should be given an opportunity to dance and consistently championed dance in Aboriginal and multicultural communities. Walker was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame at the inaugural Australian Dance Awards in 1997.

Margaret Walker *On this date in 1915, Margaret Walker was born in Birmingham, Alabama. She was an African-American novelist and poet, one of the leading Black woman writers of the mid-20th century.
After graduating from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois (BA, 1935), Walker joined the Federal Writers' Project in Chicago, where she began a brief literary relationship with novelist Richard Wright. She attended the University of Iowa (M.A. 1940) and wrote For My People (1942), a critically acclaimed volume of poetry that celebrates Black American culture. In the title poem, originally published in Poetry magazine in 1937, she recounts Black American history and calls for a racial awakening. Walker began teaching in the 1940s and joined the faculty at Jackson State College (now Jackson State University) at Jackson, Mississippi, in 1949.
She completed her first novel, Jubilee (1966), as her doctoral dissertation for the University of Iowa (Ph.D., 1965). Based on the life of Walker's maternal great-grandmother, Jubilee chronicles the progress of a slave family from the mid- to late-19th century. In How I Wrote Jubilee (1972), Walker traced her development of the story from her grandmother's oral family history through her extensive historical research. Her second volume of poetry, Prophets for a New Day (1970) makes comparisons between the prophets of the Bible and the Black leaders of the civil rights movement. October Journey (1973) consists mostly of poems commemorating her personal heroes, such as Harriet Tubman, Gwendolyn Brooks, and her father.

    INTRODUCTION
Walker was an important voice in the African-American literary community for seven decades. Her poetry and fiction, especially her novel, Jubilee (1966), helped to capture the essence of the struggles and triumphs of African Americans from the pre-Civil War period to the present.
    Biographical Information
For My People (1942), was selected by Stephen Vincent Ben©t for the Yale Younger Poets Series; the first such award given to a black woman. By the time she was sixteen, Walker had completed high school and was halfway through college. Her parents had accepted teaching posts at New Orleans College, now Dillard University, and moved the family from Alabama to Louisiana. During her sophomore year in college, Walker had the opportunity to meet renowned poet Langston Hughes. Hughes advised Walker's parents to have their daughter educated in the North and encouraged Walker to continue working and refine her style. Consequently, in 1932 Walker transferred to Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois where she received her Bachelor of Arts in English in 1935. During her enrollment, an encounter with W.E.B. DuBois led to her first publication in the May 1934 edition of The Crisis, a magazine of the NAACP. Margaret Walker was already a published author at age 19. In 1936, Walker began working for the Federal Writers' Project under the Works Progress Administration (WPA), thus mingling with many great writers of the era such as Richard Wright and
