Viking Fiction ISBN: 0670032670 Read an Excerpt Reading Group Guide Susan Vreeland's THE FOREST LOVER is the magnificent story of a woman who has a burning desire to be recognized in her field. The trouble is that she lives in Victoria, British Columbia at the turn of the twentieth century. Females in business are maligned, especially one who would make a living at painting. Emily Carr is such a woman, a woman far ahead of her time. Vreeland examines the emotional makeup of a woman who goes against the protocol of decency for a well-bred girl in Victoria. She embarrasses her three sisters by her repeated forays into the wilderness north of Vancouver to paint native Indian tribal people and their totems. She is obsessed with the idea of picturing them on canvas to preserve a dying heritage. None are interested in her venture, and her sisters are defiant in their resolve against her work. Despite their objections, Carr ventures forth into the Canadian wilderness to paint trees, totems and the people she learns to love. Her best friend and soul mate is an Indian mother, Sophie Frank. Sophie is an artist in her own right; she makes baskets to sell in Victoria. A Christian, she uses her proceeds to purchase gravestone markers for her dead children. who have fallen to "white men's diseases."

Emergency Plan
"Girl in Hyacinth Blue" author Susan Vreeland to deliver lecture at Fairfield University, book signing to follow
January 3, 2006
Susan Vreeland, author of the internationally best-selling novels "The Passion of Artemisia," "The Forest Lover," and "Girl in Hyacinth Blue," will present a lecture on Wednesday, February 1, at 7 p.m. at Fairfield University. Vreeland will discuss "The Art of Fiction" and introduce her latest work, a collection of short stories entitled "Life Studies." A book signing will follow the lecture, which is presented by University College in conjunction with the Pequot Library. Vreeland is known for infusing historical fiction with the beauty and power of art. "Life Stories" features 17 short stories about Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists, as well as Michelangelo, Caravaggio and Picasso. Her three novels are historical fiction pieces centering on the lives of artists - female Baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi, rebel Canadian painter Emily Carr, and Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. "Imagining my way into the lives of the people who might have owned the painting through the centuries, I thought less of what I was going through, and more of the characters, settings, and circumstances I was creating," said Vreeland, who was diagnosed with lymphoma at the time she began writing "Girl in Hyacinth Blue." "Creative endeavor can aid healing because it lifts us out of self-absorption and gives us a goal. Mine was to live long enough to finish this set of stories."

An Interview with Susan Vreeland By Meredith Allard Susan Vreeland is the author of the much-loved, best-selling historical novels Girl in Hyacinth Blue and The Passion of Artemesia The Forest Lover , about the rebel Canadian painter Emily Carr, is available in paperback and Life Studies , a story collection about Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters and sculptors, has been published. You can visit Susan online at www.svreeland.com Meredith Allard: What inspired you to write Girl in Hyacinth Blue ? Why do you think Vermeer's paintings have been the catalyst for several novels? Susan Vreeland: In 1996, a few weeks after attending Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, I was diagnosed with lymphoma. Wanting to fill my eyes and thoughts with beauty as I began chemotherapy, I pored over art books and absorbed the placidness of Monet's garden, the sparkling color of the Impressionists, the strength and solidity of Michelangelo's figures showing the titanic power of humans at one with God, and the serene Dutch women in Johannes Vermeer's interiors. These women took on added significance because I had a Dutch name. It was comforting, in case I had to leave this world, to find, through them, my heritage and place of origin, and perhaps something of the strength of Dutch character. I began to recognize that art can emerge from extremity. In my case, long, uninterrupted days free from teaching high school became a gift which resulted in

Just a short note on Passion of Artemisia. It was sort of a let down. I really loved Girl in Hyacinth Blue , so I was looking forward to another book from this author. Only one thing really happens in this book though. Maybe if I had known more about the art ahead of time I would have enjoyed it more. Posted by Cali at 8:28 AM

This is the story of its owners whose lives are influenced by its beauty and mystery. Despite their unsatisfied longings, their own and others' flaws, the girl in hyacinth blue has the power to engender love in all its human variety. One of the 25 most distinguished novels of 1999. Publishers Weekly "Insightful observations about the worth and the truth of art....Elegantly executed, with characters who have the solidity, and the elusive mystery, of Vermeer's subjects....One wants to read these tales at one sitting....Vreeland paints her canvas with the sure strokes of a talented artist. " Publishers Weekly "Intelligent, searching and unusual, the novel is filled with luminous moments...a sense of tenderness, of gratitude for the gift of life...it has a way of lingering in the reader's mind."
