WILLIAM T. VOLLMANN Thursday, February 7 at 7:00 pm William T. Vollmann has investigated humanity's obsession with violence (Rising Up and Rising Down), taken a personal look into the hearts and minds of the poor (Poor People), and now turns his attentions to America, to our romanticizing of "freedom" and the ways in which we restrict the very liberties we profess to admire. Riding Toward Everywhere is the new book from the National Book Award winning author of Europe Central. William T. Vollmann is the author of seven novels; three collections of stories; a seven-volume critique of violence, Rising Up and Rising Down (finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award); and Poor People, an examination of poverty. His most recent novel, Europe Central, won the National Book Award in 2005. He has also won the PEN Center USA West Award for Fiction, a Shiva Naipaul Memorial Prize, and a Whiting Writers' Award. No other writer has appeared more often at The Booksmith as has this acclaimed California author.

What the hell's wrong with William T. Vollmann?
International Herald Tribune - 01/24/2008
Tags : Authors Books Entertainment Fine Arts Notwithstanding its brevity, "Riding Toward Everywhere" bears all the water-marks of Vollmann ism. The absence of quotation marks. The fondness for footnotes and endnotes. The preoccupation with squalor. Vollmann is an avid student of squalor, a Rhodes scholar of squalor, and thus this book also features an ensemble of demented waysiders, ceaseless transcriptions of loathsome graffiti... Vote!

He has investigated the causes and symptoms of humanity's obsession with violence (Rising Up and Rising Down), taken a personal look into the hearts and minds of the world's poorest inhabitants (Poor People), and now turns his attentions to America itself, to our romanticizing of "freedom" and the ways in which we restrict the very freedoms we profess to admire. For Riding Toward Everywhere, Vollmann himself takes to the rails. His main accomplice is Steve, a captivating fellow trainhopper who expertly accompanies him through the secretive waters of this particular way of life. Vollmann describes the thrill and terror of lying in a trainyard in the dark, avoiding the flickering flashlights of the railroad bulls; the shockingly, gorgeously wild scenery of the American West as seen from a grainer platform; the complicated considerations involved in trying to hop on and off a moving train. It's a dangerous, thrilling, evocative examination of this underground lifestyle, and it is, without a doubt, one of Vollmann's most hauntingly beautiful narratives.

by William T. Vollmann Ecco, 752 pp. CLR Rating:
RISING UP AND RISING DOWN Sinks Under Its Own Density
This is a cautionary tale. With the exceptions of several of his earlier works, every time I take on a book by William T. Vollmann the same thought always wanders through my head about 100 to 150 pages into the narrative, “Why in the hell am I reading this. It’s boring. It’s self-absorbed. It’s awful.” Well, Rising Up and Rising Down is the thirteenth title by the author that I’ve labored, struggled, battled my way through and nothing’s changed. What would take a reasonably competent writer perhaps fifty pages to say or explain takes Vollmann 515 pages of over and over and over stating and restating the same premise until I became so desperate that I tossed the book in a corner, bundled up to face below-zero temperatures and fierce winds whipping down from the Yellowstone caldera and lashing my little town of Livingston. Then I struck out for The Owl Bar for a couple of stiff drinks and some mundane, thankfully, conversation. I have no idea why I’ve read all of this guy’s books. I really don’t. And what makes this a truly disturbing situation is that I recently ordered

William Vollmann is renowned for both fiction and nonfiction about the victims and perpetrators of global violence, as well as prostitutes, addicts, and street people. As a journalist, Vollmann has experienced and reported on military conflicts in far-flung places, including Sarajevo, the Congo, and Soviet-occupied Afghanistan. "If he is still 'just' a cult writer, it's an extraordinarily devoted cult, one that has already made him a sort of write-in candidate for the Nobel Prize." Madison Smartt Bell , "New York Times Magazine" profile [Vollman's books] tower over the work of his contemporaries by virtue of their enormous range, huge ambition, stylistic daring, wide learning, audacious innovation, and sardonic wit." - Steven Moore, "Washington Post" "In addition to Vollmann's writing, which is precise and grittily poetic, one of the tertiary pleasures of 'Rising Up and Rising Down' is that the project provides a meandering tour of hot spots across the globe, from Cambodia to Burma, Iraq to Afghanistan, Somalia, Yemen, Yugoslavia, and Colombia, many of which Vollmann visited on journalistic assignment. The list of sources he cites in depth is simply dazzling-from Cicero to the king of Sparta." - John Freeman, the "Boston Globe"
