Becoming Attached: First Relationships and How They Shape Our Capacity to Love
by Karen, Robert
ISBN: 0195115015
The quality of our connection to others has such a profound impact on the quality of our lives. That is why I recommend this book so highly. If you want to understand yourself and other people and flavor of connections between people, more than you do now, this book will provide essential knowledge. It's one of the best books I have read in a very, very long time. Robert Karen, while not saying anything startlingly out of line with the knowledge I had already gathered and assimilated on the subject, put it all into a much sharper, clearer focus. I certainly learned a lot of new things as well. I'd go so far as to say, if you are only going to read one or two non-fiction books this year, make this one of them. While not light reading, it's consistently engaging. As he traces the development of attachment theory (Bowlby, et al.) Karen tells the story of the psychology wars in the days of Anna Freud and Melanie Klein. I found this hilarious. When so much of psychology seems to bark up the wrong tree (trees), John Bowlby makes much good sense. Let's have demonstrable principles rather than ungrounded theory! So much of what parents are advised to do is non-optimum. Bowlby's student, Mary Ainsworth went on to be a pioneer in her own right in the study of effective parenting. This is fascinating stuff, where you are a parent yourself, contemplate becoming a parent, or whether you just had a childhood of your own.

Karen Volkman
Crash's Law
Poems Winner of the 1995 National Poetry Series, judged and selected by Heather McHugh.
Through myth, dream, and sensual detail, the poems in this remarkable first collection portray a hectic world plagued by a desire for psychic coherence. The book begins and ends in extremity: the opening poem, "Infernal," evokes the searing realm of an actual and metaphoric Miami, while the final poem, "New Heaven, New Earth," alludes to seeking a path through dense woods amid a blinding, obliterating blizzard. In their longing to define a set of terms for spiritual survival, these essentially lyric poems merge an evocation of contemporary consciousness with the oldest conventions of cry and song. "Volkman's poems are quintessentially . . . blood raw, soul-stinging, torqued by their forcefulness. A riveting, fresh collection."— Booklist "Volkman's style informs her work with an exciting confidence."— Publishers Weekly

A welcome introduction to contemporary poetics, this collection represents one of the first attempts to chart the progress of a new generation of poets. Each chapter focuses on one poet, and includes a selection of poems, a brief statement of purpose by the poet, and a critical essay by a notable scholar. Working in forms ranging from the post-confessional lyric to documentary poetics, from the prose poem and the sonnet to sound poetry, these thirteen poets rank among the most notable and distinct of recent years. American Poets in the 21st Century will serve as a useful and enlightening guide for any reader interested in how new American poetry can look, feel, and sound. The enclosed CD includes each of the thirteen poets reading their work.

Halloween's Coming!
I was trying to remember the last time I ever went "Trick-or-Treating." I think it was sometime around seventh or eighth grade. I can't recall what costume I wore for that last spin around the neighborhoods. It was probably something cheap, homemade, definitely not one of those glossy, plastic, store-bought costumes. I do remember that I didn't go as far into the neighborhoods as I had in my younger days. The whole idea of wandering in the sharp evening air left me with many doubts about the efficacy of "Trick-or-Treating" as a means of achieving a sick candy buzz.
I suspect I stopped dressing up for Halloween because I was tired of pretending. It all probably had a lot to do with going through puberty . . . I was in a hurry to be somebody, but I wasn't sure who that somebody was just yet.
Anyway, kids will be swarming the streets this Monday. We live in the suburbs, flanked by homes with children. Meredith's filling our candy cache. I did a little decorating around the house, stuffing a garbage bag witch with newspaper. The witch is a cheap 99 cent decoration, but she has her charms. There are also rubber bats, plastic spider webs, and jack-o-lanterns set here and there. Meredith has also bought me a costume. . . It's a felt Devil's mask. I suppose I'll carry my Halloween demons with me when I answer the door to the tune of sappy Halloween sounds (a disc Meredith also bought). Mere, of course, has a Frankenstein felt mask. The dog shall remain unmasked, though we do have a pink wig he likes to wear. He's pretty certain he's a dog. He likes being a dog.

Norfolk: 1890 Annexation
The acquisition of the Brambleton neighborhood in 1887 increased the city's population and encouraged future city annexations. In 1890, Atlantic City and a large tract of undeveloped land was annexed to the city of Norfolk. Atlantic City, which was located near Fort Norfolk, was a thriving working-class community with homes, shops and industries. Major employers included the Norfolk Knitting Mills, several lumber firms, and an oyster business. The former Atlantic City Baptist Church still stands on Olney Road.
