Virgil Thomson
Virgil Thomson, born in Kansas City and long resident in Paris and New York, is one of the few true modernists in America, since most of our moderns turn out Romantics in Disguise. Over and over, he demonstrates that nobody knows more about modern Europe, in pieces that taught Europe a lot about the U. S. and the U. S. a lot about Europe. He's an adept in two arts, for he also happens to be a major American prose writer, specializing in music criticism. For sheer pleasure, check out the Virgil Thomson Reader Thomson's music is almost disconcertingly spare and direct. In the consciously American pieces especially, there is a kind of aural equivalent to Cubist collage, as ragtime, waltzes, tangos, two-steps, fiddle tunes, and hymns get pasted into the texture. Unlike Charles Ives , there's an unsentimental distance and clarity to it all, like someone without illusions able to state exactly what's on his mind. Thomson gets this effect in his prose, too.

He began taking lessons at age 7 with Brian Czempinski and later Graham Morgan,- now a legend in the Australian drumming community. Joining his first rock band at age 15 was surely the right choice for the young drummer. The band was called `Cloud Nine`, later to become `Taste`.

Note to Rep. Virgil Goode: Keith Ellison Is Not An Immigrant
In a letter sent this month to his constituents, Rep. Virgil Goode (R-VA) attacked incoming Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) , the first Muslim elected to Congress: The Muslim Representative from Minnesota was elected by the voters of that district and In the letter, Goode repeatedly justifies his attack as related to immigration policy We need to stop illegal immigration totally and reduce legal immigration and end the diversity visas policy pushed hard by President Clinton and allowing many persons from the Middle East to come to this country. I fear that in the next century we will have many more Muslims in the United States if we do not adopt the strict immigration policies that I believe are necessary to preserve the values and beliefs traditional to the United States of America and to prevent our resources from being swamped. One problem: Keith Ellison is not an immigrant. In fact, his ancestors have been

    Overview
Users browse their photos and related information while telling or composing stories of their personal life experiences, all the while maintaining an idea of time, place, and people. Stories consist of more than answers to the simple questions When? Where? and Who?, but that information provides a framework from which a rich narratives are created. Virgil is a photo browser that allows a user to browse his personal photo collection and related information while maintaining and exploiting the current context (time, location, and personal identity). The first time you run Virgil:
    • The progress bar at the bottom of the application will indicate how many photos have been processed and how many are remaining (hover the mouse over it for precise information). When complete you will see your photos automatically clustered by time. Time clusters are shown in a hierarchical tree view on the left, while corresponding thumbnails are shown on the right. Digital photos that were not created by a digital camera, or are from an old digital camera, do not have reliable timestamps. If no internal timestamp is found, Virgil will use the file system's last modified timestamp for the file. Some digital cameras also allow the time to be zero if the clock has not been set. Virgil will place any of these photos in a special time cluster labeled "No timestamps". A future update of Virgil will include functionality to generate valid timestamp properties.

Virgil was thoroughly educated in Greek and Roman literature, rhetoric, and philosophy in the Italian cities of Cremona, Milan, Rome, and Naples. The patronage of Roman statesman Gaius Maecenas relieved him of financial cares and allowed him to devote himself wholly to literary pursuits and to study. He spent the greater part of his life at or near Naples and Nola, numbering among his intimate friends his patron Maecenas; Octavian, who became Emperor
