Judicial Watch and Hillary "health care"
Posted by Virgil under Politics Add comment No trackbacks Today I got a fresh reminder of my days in Communist Romania, when the government would harass, intimidate, arrest and even kill those opposing Communist propaganda and plans.
The Judicial Watch got a hold of internal Clinton clan memos which discuss Hillary's healthcare plans from 1993. Some of the comments made by Bill's own staffers are amazing:
I can think of parallels in wartime, but I have trouble coming up with a precedent in our peacetime history for such broad and centralized control over a sector of the economy…Is the public really ready for this?... none of us knows whether we can make it work well or at all…
A memo from Senator Rockefeller encourages Hillary to use the power of the media and federal government to harass and intimidate those opposing her healthcare plan:
The memorandum suggests that Hillary Clinton “use classic opposition research” to attack those who were excluded by the Clinton Administration from Task Force deliberations and to “expose lifestyles, tactics and motives of lobbyists” in order to deflect criticism. Senator Rockefeller also suggested news organizations “are anxious and willing to receive guidance [from the Clinton Administration] on how to time and shape their [news] coverage.

Illegal immigrants take jobs from our citizens. I'm working to stop illegal immigration and secure America's borders. We must keep America strong and free by supporting the war on terrorism. While the United States has had a number of successes in fighting those who want to destroy America, our borders are porous and are far too open to illegal immigrants, potential terrorists, and drug dealers. I'm committed to stopping the flow of jobs out of our country. We must preserve jobs in America for Americans. We need even more job training and additional job opportunities, and we must continue our fight against trade legislation and agreements that shift manufacturing jobs to third world countries. Social Security must be preserved for senior citizens and the disabled. I am working hard to protect Social Security and Medicare, and have helped to provide a presecription drug plan for seniors and the disabled. Social Security and Medicare were lifesavers for my mother, who died at age 87, and are lifesavers for millions of other Americans. Corporate contributions are not allowed. Contributions to Goode for Congress are not tax deductible as charitable gifts for income tax purposes. Federal law requires we report the name, mailing address, occupation, and employer for each individual whose contributions aggregate in excess of $200 per calendar year.

Virgil The Aeneid - Study Guide The Aeneid Introduction (70-19 B.C.)
"The way down to hell is easy. The gates of black Dis stand open night and day. But to retrace one's steps and escape to the upper air - that is toil, that is labour" (Aeneid VI,126)
Publius Vergilius Maro, generally known as Virgil, was born at Andes, near Mantua in 70 B.C. and became the greatest and most influential of all the Roman poets. His life story, taken particularly by English Renaissance poets as a poetic ideal in itself, is largely passed down to us by Donatus. Virgil's father seems to have been either a farmer or a potter, while his mother was called Magia Polla. He learnt rhetoric, philosophy and other subjects in Rome and was taught by, among others, the Epicurean philosopher Siron who would later house him after land confiscations in 41 B.C. that lost him the farm where he had composed his first works, the Eclogues (37 B.C.), in 43 B.C.
For some time before Virgil, as in art, the Romans had sought to little effect to emulate the successes of the Greeks in the writing of pastorals (associated with Theocritus), didactic poems (see Hesiod) and epics (see Homer's Odyssey ). Virgil mastered all of these forms: in his pastoral

Virgil
70-19 BC Publius Vergilius Maro (October 15, 70 BC - September 21, 19 BC), later called Virgilius, and known in English as Virgil or Vergil, was a classical Roman poet, the author of the Eclogues, the Georgics and the substantially completed Aeneid, the last being an epic poem of twelve books that became the Roman Empire's national epic. A fictional depiction of Virgil was Dante Alighieri's guide through hell and purgatory in Dante's epic poem The Divine Comedy. Virgil was born in the village of Andes, near Mantua in Cisalpine Gaul (Gaul south of the Alps; present-day northern Italy). Virgil was of non-Roman Italian ancestry, which he alluded to and defended in the Aeneid when he said that Rome will be of mixed blood. Virgil received his earliest education at five years old. He later went to Rome to study rhetoric, medicine, and astronomy, which he soon abandoned for philosophy. In this period, while Virgil was in the school of Siro the Epicurean, he began writing poetry. In 19 BC Virgil set out on a trip to Greece and Asia with the intention of revising his masterpiece, the Aeneid, already substantially completed, and then of devoting the remainder of his life to philosophical study. A group of minor poems attributed to the youthful Virgil survive, but are largely considered spurious. One, the Catalepton, consists of fourteen short poems, some of which may be Virgil's, and another, a short narrative poem titled the Culex (the mosquito), was attributed to Virgil as early as the 1st century AD. These dubious poems are sometimes referred to as the Appendix Vergiliana.

Biography of Virgil (70 BC-19 BC)
Publius Vergilius Maro, more commonly referred to as Vergil or Virgil, was born on October 15, 70 B.C., in Andes, a region of northern Italy near Mantua. The name "Virgil" stems from the Latin virga, or "wand"; poets were often thought to be gifted with mystical abilities and supernatural powers. Legend has it that when Virgil was in the womb, his mother dreamed that she gave birth to a laurel branch that, once planted, sprung immediately from the earth, and within moments became a tree heavily laden with fruit and flowers. The very next day, Virgil's mother was walking along a dirt path when she suddenly flung herself into a ditch and then delivered such an extraordinarily mild-mannered child that all who encountered him remarked that he was surely destined for greatness. Virgil was the eldest of three brothers; his brother Silo died during birth, and his brother Flaccus lived only into young adulthood. Virgil was an agreeable man, if not a healthy one, and was somewhat ascetic in his personal habits, notoriously picky about food and wine. Many historians believe that Virgil was homosexual, and he had an especially close relationship with a man named Alexander, whom he wrote about in the guise of "Alexis". Virgil's parents were relatively well-to-do farm owners with a considerable amount of property to their name, and they provided their son with an education befitting his thirst for knowledge. Virgil studied in Cremona, Milan and Rome, and showed a particular interest in mathematics and medicine. In 54 B.C., he attended the Academy of Epidius, in Rome, where he studied law and rhetoric. One of his classmates, Octavian, would eventually become the Emperor Augustus and Virgil's greatest patron. When he finished at the Academy of Epidius, Virgil argued his first law case, but soon gave up the study of law and turned to philosophy.

    Virgil Thomson
    Composer, critic
Composer Virgil Thomson began his musical training at age five, and by his twelfth year he was performing professionally on both piano and organ. In the mid-1920s he settled in Paris, where he began to compose original works. There he also became part of a cosmopolitan group of avant-garde musicians, writers, and painters then dominating the cultural life of the city. A close friend was the expatriate American writer Gertrude Stein, who wrote the librettos for his operas Four Saints in Three Acts and The Mother of Us All , the latter based on the life of suffragist Susan B. Anthony. By the late 1930s, Thomson was writing music for movies, and in 1948 his score for the film Louisiana Story won a Pulitzer Prize. Thomson was also a major spokesman for the new directions of twentieth-century music as critic for the New York Herald-Tribune from 1940 to 1954. Alice Neel painted many of her colleagues in the world of arts and letters, particularly those in New York City, her home for many years. As she painted, Neel sometimes exaggerated the effect that the body or expression of her sitter had on her own mind. After Thomson's sitting, she wrote, "When I painted the trousers I must confess I thought of elephants so that is the color they really are."
