Virgil (70 B.C-19 B.C) , regarded as the greatest Roman poet, known for his epic, the Aeneid (written about 29 B.C.E), which had taken its literary model from Homer 's epic poems Iliad and Odyssey Virgil was born on October 15, 70 B.C.E., in a small village near Mantua in Northern Italy. Publius Vergilius Maro, or Virgil has influenced Western literature for two millennia, but little is known about the man himself. His father was a prosperous landowner, described variously as a "potter" and a "courier", who could afford thorough education for the future poet. Virgil attended school at Cremona and Milan, and then went to Rome, where he studied mathematics, medicine and rhetoric, and completed his studies in Naples. He entered literary circles as an "Alexandrian," the name given to a group of poets who sought inspiration in the sophisticated work of third-century Greek poets also known as Alexandrians. After the battle of Philippi in 42 B.C. Virgil's property was confiscated for veterans. According to some sources it was afterwards restored at the command of Octavian (later styled Augustus). In the following years Virgil spent most of his time in Campania and Sicily, but he had also a house at Rome.

V irgil (Publius Vergilius Maro, 70-19 B.C.) remains one of the most influential Roman authors throughout history and his texts have exhibited profound effects upon writers throughout the years. He was recognized even by his own contemporaries as an exemplary poet and a model for others. He employed a vast knowledge of ancient legends and associations throughout his texts resulting in his reputation as a "learned" poet. Unlike other poets of his time, Virgil's freshness and wit never diminishes over his career and he retains a delicate subtlety of expressions throughout his works. H is qualities of tenderness, humanity and deep religious sentiment caused him to be regarded as the herald of Christianity throughout the middle ages. This ensured a wide transmission of his works and caused Dante to choose him as the guide in his master work The Divine Comedy . Later, in the modern era, his works became required reading in scholastic curricula and his texts became vehicles for education in Latin grammar. D uring the last ten years of his life, Virgil worked on

Vergilius (70 B.C.E. - 19 B.C.E.) - in English Virgil or Vergil, Latin in full Publius Vergilius Maro The greatest Roman poet, called by Tennyson "wielder of the stateliest measure ever moulded by the lips of man." Virgil is known for his epic, the AENEID (written about 29 B.C.E., unfinished), which had taken as its literary model Homer's epic poems Iliad and Odyssey. The tale depicts Aeneas's search for a new homeland and his war to found a city. This archetypical character was given much later form in those Western heroes familiar from the books of Owen Wister and Louis L'Amour "It is easy to go down into Hell; night and day, the gates of dark Death stand wide; but to climb back again, to retrace one's steps to the upper air - there's the rub, the task." (from Aeneid After the battle of Philippi in 42 B.C.E., Virgil’s property in Cisalpine Gaul, or else his father's, was confiscated for veterans. "I leave my father's fields and my sweet ploughlands, / an exile from my native soil," wrote Virgil later in ECLOGUES. According to some sources the property was afterwards restored at the command of Octavian (later styled Augustus). In the following years Virgil spent most of his time in Campania and Sicily, but he also had a house in Rome. During the reign of emperor Augustus, Virgil became a member of his court circle and was advanced by a minister, Maecenas, patron of the arts and close friend to the poet

Virgil (70 BC - 19 BC)
Amongst the greatest of the Roman poets, Virgil was the author of the Aeneid. Publius Vergilius Maro, known in English as Virgil (or Vergil) was born near Mantua in northern Italy in October 70 BC. He spent his early life in northern Italy. His first work was the 'Eclogues', published in the mid-30s BC. They give an artificial, idealised picture of a world of singing shepherds - the Arcadia of a later European pastoral ideal - but are also filled with references to contemporary political figures. Virgil's next work was the 'Georgics', published in 29 BC and was a didactic poem, in four books, on farming. It looks back ultimately to the work of the archaic Greek poet Hesiod (c.700 BC). It was dedicated to Roman statesman Gaius Maecenas, who had become Virgil's patron. His support enabled Virgil to dedicate himself full time to study and writing. As well as Maecenas, Virgil's friends included Octavian, who became the Emperor Augustus in 27 BC, and many prominent writers and poets.
