Vinge published his first short story, "Bookworm, Run!", in the issue of March 1966 of Analog Science Fiction , then edited by John W. Campbell . He became a moderately prolific contributor to SF magazines in the 1960s and early 1970s, adapting two of his stories into a short novel, Tatja Grimm's World (1969), and publishing a second novel

      Interview: Vernor Vinge
      By Jayme Lynn Blaschke
15 September 2003 V ernor Vinge has never been accused of being prolific, but what his work lacks in quantity it more than makes up for in quality. His first published fiction, a short story titled "Apartness," appeared in 1965 and since then Vinge has built a reputation as one of the most inventive writers of hard science fiction working today. He earned Hugo nominations for his 1984 novel The Peace War and its 1986 sequel Marooned in Realtime (both collected in Across Realtime ) but it was his 1992 novel A Fire Upon the Deep which finally won him the elusive Hugo. The sequel to that work, A Deepness in the Sky repeated the feat in 2000 and his novella "Fast Times at Fairmont High" (available in his Collected Stories ) completed the Hugo hat-trick in 2001. A long-time computer science professor at San Diego State University, Vinge has recently retired from academia and now devotes himself to fiction full-time. Jayme Lynn Blaschke: I have to apologize for my first question, because I know it's one you're asked in every interview. But I see no way around it: Can you please describe the concept of the singularity as you perceive it?

How can we plan for something which, by definition, changes the world in unimaginable ways? Vernor Vinge is the populizer of the term "Singularity" to describe the point at which technological progress advances so much that we cannot predict anything beyond that point. In this address from Accelerating Change 2005, he discusses how we could prepare for this type of event. The Novels of Vernor Vinge
Last updated Summer, 1998 Vernor Vinge has undergone significant improvement over the course of his writing carear. His most recent works have been great, especially his magnum opus "A Fire Upon the Deep". Vinge has a rather frightening vision of the near future which he skirts about in his later stories: namely that if present trends continue, we will soon (like within 30 years) create a super human intelligence. Once this happens, Vinge thinks the age of humanity will be over. Frankly, I hope he is wrong (he says as much himself) but this idea gives a strong undercurrent of mystery and power to his science fiction.
    A Fire Upon the Deep
This novel is very "big" and thoroughly enjoyable. Vinge introduces a great new idea with many ramifications and also creates a very plausible society of alien "dogs" that works quite well. Vinge's idea is that the rules of physics that we know here on Earth are NOT constant accross space. Essentially things get faster the farther away you go from the gravity well at the center of a galaxy. This novel won the Hugo for 1992 (along with the vastly inferior Doomsday Book by Connie Willis).

Havarti for free speech NEW! Talk by Vinge on What if the Singularity does NOT happen? I consider Vernor Vinge to be one of the most visionary SF authors living today (it could be claimed this directly makes him one of the most visionary living authors, period, but I won't get into that.) His vision of technology is quite different from most SF, and on the surface seems quite fantastic, yet in fact feels the most realistic to me. His books have placed him in the extropian literary pantheon. Technology in much of SF is simply an effector of the vision of the work. FTL, anti-gravity, artificial gravity, all working to build interstellar empires regardless of the physical obstacles. Social changes are often minimal. Vernor Vinge is at the other extreme; in looking at the potential of realistic technology, particularly computers/AI or cognitive science, he has come to the conclusion that we must run into a Singularity beyond which meaningful prediction (and fiction) is impossible. Idealized nanotechnology also has potential for creating a singularity, although not as drastic as the one causable by control over the nature of intelligence. Much of his fiction is based on skirting around the Singularity and is quite interesting thereby. It is also well written.

V ernor Vinge, o  n  l  i  n  e    p  r  o  p  h  e  t The author whose science fiction classics predicted the Internet finds that reality is hard to keep up with. By Andrew Leonard April 5, 1999 F or historians of cyberculture, science fiction author Vernor Vinge enjoys unimpeachable street cred. Three years before William Gibson dazzled the SF world with "Neuromancer," Vinge captured the essence of the online reality to come in his eerily prescient 1981 novella, "True Names." Vinge's breakthrough 1992 novel, "A Fire Upon the Deep," continued his tradition of incorporating Internet flavors the intergalactic civilizations that flourish in its far, far future communicate with each other via a system that's remarkably similar to the Net's Usenet newsgroups. Longtime fans might be in for a bit of a surprise, however, when they read Vinge's new offering, "A Deepness in the Sky." There is no Internet analog in this entertaining, intricately plotted space opera, nor is there any sign of another Vinge standby the ever-popular artificially intelligent superbeing. Instead, "A Deepness in the Sky" (set in the same future as "A Fire Upon the Deep," only about 30,000 years earlier) takes place in a time when computers have yet to break through to sentience. It's a dramatic change of pace for Vinge forced on him, he confesses, by the accelerating pace of events in his own, real-time life.

Vernor Vinge is the winner of four Hugo awards for two novels, A Deepness in the Sky and A Fire Upon the Deep , and two novellas, The Cookie Monster and Fast Times at Fairmont High . His fiction often focuses on the advancement of technology and its impending threat to humanity. Such themes appeared early in his work and would later influence the formation of the cyberpunk genre. Vernor was a professor at San Diego State University for many years before retiring to become a fulltime writer. His latest novel, Rainbows End , will be available in May from Tor books. As a supplement to this interview, and to better understand the full scope of Vernor’s work, please see his essay The Coming Technological Singularity
Shaun Farrell: Like many of your stories, Rainbows End deals with a society on the edge of a technological singularity in which technology is advancing so quickly that humanity is becoming obsolete. The plot partly deals with Alfred Vaz’s attempt to save the world from falling over the edge, though the means he plans to use to accomplish that end are extreme to say the least. How close do you think our society is right now to reaching a singularity like the one you present in Rainbows End Vernor Vinge: Well, the particular form in
