Gore Vidal
Biography:

Born March 1925, October - The grandson of Oklahoma senator Thomas P. Gore, Gore Vidal led a privileged, sheltered childhood. Often tiring of the expensive creature comforts surrounding him, Vidal spent much of his spare time at the movies. "As I now move...toward the door marked Exit," he mused late in life, "it occurs to me that the only thing I ever really liked to do was... Continue Bio >>

Thus, as someone who has read most of Vidal's works, I share a few quotes with you here, and invite you to read the man's works. His writings will give you much to ponder, question and explore. Be it through his non-fiction or fiction, Vidal's work informs educates, and elucidates our society, its government, and history. He is truly our nation's biographer. Three articles I wrote: The "Fruit of Eden" - Christine Smith's review of Gore Vidal's new memoir "Point to Point Navigation: 1964-2006" Tribute to Gore Vidal on his 80th Birthday (an article I wrote which was published worldwide on Oct. 3, 2005). A few links appear embedded in the brief excerpts from Vidal interviews below. However, I recommend you also visit my GORE VIDAL LINKS' page to visit some excellent informative Vidal websites and audio interviews (and transcripts thereof).

by Gore Vidal Publisher: Ballantine
ISBN: Reminiscent of Robert Grave's Claudius books, Gore Vidal's imperial memoirs, Julian , is a well-researched, informative, and engaging piece of historical fiction about the nephew of the Emperor Constantine, best known for converting Rome to Christianity. Julian, more familiar with his epithet, the Apostate, tried to stem the tide of monotheism once he came to power, but his term in office was too short to effect any lasting change. Before he came to power, the pose of an intellectual would-be cleric probably saved him from political assassination. Julian's early life was that of a prince with all that entails; including close supervision, limited access to people besides his brother, and strict regulation of behavior. In addition to these, the ordinary shackles of royalty, the policies of Julian's cousin, the reigning emperor, Constantius, included judicious murder of anyone who threatened his supremacy. Having first witnessed his father's murder and then his brother's, Julian had reason to be wary of his cousin. Seeking the life of a bearded philosopher, Julian hoped to escape his cousin's notice. But Constantius needed him to act as puppet head of Gaul and so Julian was dragged away from his dialogues and books, given Constantius' sister to wed, and sent away from the intellectual centers of the empire.

    Vidal, Gore
Vidal, Gore, Williwaw (1946), was based on his experiences in World War II. The City and the Pillar (1948, rev. ed. 1965) was one of the first mainstream novels to deal frankly with homosexuality. His best-known novel, Myra Breckenridge (1968), is a witty satire about a man who dies and returns to life as a woman.

Review by Alfred Soto, eMusic
The seventh entry in Gore Vidal’s “Chronicles of Empire.” Gore Vidal manipulates his studied paladin detachment with such dexterity that it's not often we can accuse his fiction of paranoia. Unfortunately, The Golden Age mostly fulfills his detractors' worst conclusions. The weakest entry in Vidal's so-called "Chronicles of Empire," it covers a considerable swath of history, and certainly the most momentous in the Republic's history: the prosecution of World War II by the wily, irascible Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the subsequent creation of the National Security State, officiated by a former haberdasher and accidental president named Harry Truman, whose loyalty oaths and blithe stewardship of America's new world order are an extension, Vidal hints, of his roots in the cigar smoke-wreathed backrooms of Missouri politics. Vidal the novelist almost always gets short shrift before Vidal the essayist, but

A decade ago, I went to lunch with Gore Vidal at his house in Ravello. That house (since abandoned) and that sort of occasion have been written about so often by Vidal’s guests and interviewers, and by Vidal himself, that there is little to say that hasn’t been said. It is a beautiful place, if you like houses perched on cliffs, with an epic view of the Tyrrhenian Sea (somewhere in the hazy distance south of Salerno are the remains of the Greek settlement at Paestum). If you don’t like houses perched on cliffs, then the blinding absence of a horizon at noon on a summer’s day and the steep plunge to the road below are unnerving. Lunch inside the house at a glass table, the throne-like chairs used in a scene in

Gore Vidal quotes
from his book The Decline and Fall of the American Empire
"In almost every case [where the United States has fought wars] our overwhelming commitment to freedom, democracy and human rights has required us to support those regimes that would deny freedom, democracy and human rights to their own people.'
"The corporate grip on opinion in the United States is one of the wonders of the Western world. No First World country has ever managed to eliminate so entirely from its media all objectivity-much less dissent. "
" Television in the early 1950s ceased to be a novelty and became the principle agent for the simultaneous marketing of consumer goods and of national security state opinion."
"Every four years the naive half who vote are encouraged to believe that if we can elect a really nice man or woman President everything will be all right. But it won't be. Any individual who is able to raise $25 million to be considered presidential is not going to be much use to the people at large. He will represent oil, or aerospace, or banking, or whatever moneyed entities are paying for him. Certainly he will never represent the people of the country, and they know it. Hence, the sense of despair throughout the land as incomes fall, businesses fail and there is no redress."
" The war on drugs has nothing at all to do with drugs. It is part of an all-out war on the American people by a government interested only in control.
