Jules Verne
Jules Verne was a French author of the late 19th century who is regarded as the father of science fiction. He was born in 1828 in Nantes and studied law in Paris, where, to the displeasure of his father, he developed a passion for theater. His first play was published in 1850, but he was not very successful until the publication of his story “Five Weeks in a Balloon” in 1869. Verne spent a long time in Paris libraries researching everything from astronomy to engineering as a foundation for his fantastic adventure stories. Because of the 19th century interest in science and invention, his novels, such as JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH, FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON, and 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, became extremely popular. During his life, they brought Verne wealth and allowed him to buy a yacht and sail around Europe. They also began the science fiction tradition by predicting 20th century advances such as space flight and submarines, and are still widely read today.

Jules Verne
Novelist, b. at Nantes France , 1828; d. at Amiens , 1905. His first literary venture was a little play, Les pailles rompues", which was produced on the stage in the early fifties, but the difficulty he experience in overcoming the ill-will of the theatre Drama in the Air", attracted the attention of the public. The subject is this: a madman embarks by mistake in the car of an aeronaut, and while in the air he tries to kill his companion. Verne had discovered his forte and it was his good fortune at this juncture to find in his publisher, Mr. Herzel, a man of sound judgment, who advised him not to waste his strength, but to limit his energies to the kind of novel he seemed to have discovered. Verne followed this advice, and success crowned his talent and strenuous work. Most of his novels have had a vogue that has been denied many a masterpiece of French literature, and this vogue has not been limited to France ; it has spread beyond its frontiers. Verne was wont to show to visitors, not without a certain legitimate pride , the translations of his works kept in his library , where they occupied a goodly number of shelves, on which every language seemed to be represented. This wonderful success was undoubtedly due to the charming talent of the writer and the public's fondness for novels of adventure, but there was another

Jules Verne Moon Gun Apollo vs Verne Orbital launch vehicle. Year Family Gun-launched Country : France. Status : Design 1856. Jules Verne's moon gun, as described in his 1865 novel From the Earth to the Moon , was located in Florida. Although some errors were made, Verne used real engineering analysis to arrive at the design of his cannon and manned moon projectile. As a result, at the time of Apollo 8 and 11 missions it was noted that Verne had made an astonishing number of correct predictions about the actual missions.... The gun was poured into a 274 m deep well, with a bore of 2.74 m. The first 61 m of the barrel was filled with 122 metric tons of guncotton. This was supposed to propel the 2.74 m diameter shell to a velocity of 16.5 km/second. After deceleration going through the earth's atmosphere, the shell would have a residual velocity of 11 km/second, sufficient to reach the moon. The shell was to be constructed of aluminum, with walls 0.3 m thick. The human passengers would be protected from the tremendous G forces of acceleration and deceleration by hydraulic and frangible shock absorbers. Verne's analysis resulted in the following correct predictions:
    • The United States would launch the first manned vehicle to circumnavigate the moon.

Jules Verne ATV Given Its 'Wings'
ScienceDaily (Dec. 4, 2007) See also: The automatic deployment of these metallic blue 'wings' and the activation of the on-board navigation systems will transform the 20-tonne Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) into a fully automatic spaceship navigating towards the International Space Station (ISS). To make sure that this crucial and irreversible phase of deployment occurs smoothly in orbit, engineers have worked solidly for two weeks in November in the giant integration 'white room' at Europe's Spaceport near Kourou, French Guiana, to install and test the four huge solar arrays. This final and successful step has taken place after several years of efforts and challenges. "The test went well despite the fragility of the solar arrays. It proves that the ATV solar power, designed for up to six months in orbit, is working fine", said Detlef Otto, who is in charge of the ATV power system for ESA and who supervised the test. The bus-sized ATV spacecraft had to be rotated into a horizontal position for the integration of the solar panels. The panels were fully deployed and then folded again and latched, ready to fly. Each panel was minutely inspected before final integration.
