Paul Verlaine (1844-1896) French poet and leader of the Symbolist movement in poetry. Paul Verlaine's life style wavered between criminality and naive innocence; he married a young girl in 1870 but after a year fell in love with the young poet Arthur Rimbaud, who was seventeen. With and Charles Baudelaire he formed the so-called Decadents. In Verlaine's works two impressions predominate: that only self is important, and that the function of poetry is to preserve moments of extreme sensation and unique impressions. In spite of the 'vagueness' of his poetry, Verlaine showed a careful craftsmanship in his compositions, using simple, musical language. He maintained the outward form of classical poetry, but his work opened the way for free verse. "There is weeping in my heart
Like the rain falling on the city."

(from Romances sans Paroles, 1874) Les Fleurs du mal , which influenced deeply his writing aspirations. He studied law, but gave up after two years and entered the civil service at the City Hall. In 1862 Verlaine received his bachelor's degree.

Spring
Tender, the young auburn woman,
By such innocence aroused,
Said to the blonde young girl
These words, in a soft low voice: 'Sap which mounts, and flowers which thrust,
Your childhood is a bower:
Let my fingers wander in the moss
Where glows the rosebud 'Let me among the clean grasses
Drink the drops of dew
Which sprinkle the tender flower, 'So that pleasure, my dear,
Should brighten your open brow
Like dawn the reluctant blue.' Her dear rare body, harmonious, Fragrant, white as white Rose, whiteness of pure milk, and rosy As a lily beneath purple skies? Beauteous thighs, upright breasts, The back, the loins and belly, feast For the eyes and prying hands And for the lips and all the sense 'Little one, let us see if your bed Has still beneath the red curtain The beautiful pillow that slips so And the wild sheets. O to your bed!'

SCHEDE BIOGRAFICHE

Verlaine, Paul (1844-1896)
page: The poetry of Paul Verlaine celebrates both heterosexual and homosexual activity, including lesbian relationships. Born into a bourgeois family in Metz, France, Verlaine was the pampered only child of a military father and doting mother. As a young boy, he moved with his parents to the outskirts of Paris, later the city of departure and return for an errant poet; and yet his calm early years did not presage the tempestuous and disorderly adulthood that was to follow. Sponsor Message.
Leaving the refuge of the familial bosom, this "fearful and spoiled child" grew mischievous and bold, and devoted himself to his Parisian education, one both literary and erotic. When Verlaine described the early period of his life in his Confessions he characteristically minimized his homosexual attractions and interactions while nonetheless relating pubescent gropings with younger classmates. After abandoning law school, he became a civil servant for the city of Paris, all the while continuing to write poetry and literary criticism. His first collection of poetry

BIOGRAPHY
LA BOHEME
Paul-Marie Verlaine was born March 30, 1844 in the town of Metz on the Eastern border of France. His father, a French army officer, brought the family to Paris when Paul-Marie was seven years old.
As a young man, Verlaine made several attempts at a normal life, studying law for a couple of years, working as an insurance clerk. He married a young woman named Mathilde in 1870, and they had a son, Georges. He socialized in "bohemian" crowds as well as at more upper-class salons. He became fascinated with the poetry of Baudelaire , and worked with a publisher to arrange the publication of his own first volume, "Poemes Saturniens," in 1866.
