The following was taken from a Christian radio broadcast entitled "Nightsearch," which was a ministry of Praise Tabernacle Church . Their subject on this particular broadcast was spiritual abuse and two former members of my church gave an account of their experience. A copy of this broadcast was later obtained by my pastor and he devoted an entire Thursday evening service to play this recording to the congregation. The intent was to show the members what others were saying about the church. (No location or name was mentioned, but if you knew this couple, you would have known what church they were speaking about.) This caused quite a stir amongst the congregation. Many became angry or upset, developing an attitude of, "How dare you say that about my church and pastor!" I did not like what I was seeing. Fortunately, I was away on vacation when this happened and almost immediately heard about it upon my returning. I was able to borrow the tape and listen to it in the privacy of my own home. Though I felt areas were somewhat exaggerated, I did not have the same intense reaction as the other members. At this point I was already questioning some things that had happened and were happening at my church. When returning the cassette tape, one woman at the church held it by the tips of her fingers, as if it were something contagious or dirty. I knew both of these people who were interviewed on the broadcast. Linda had joined the church before I became a member. Mike, if I correctly recall, came after me. Both left well before I did and I have not seen or heard from them since.

Based in the Washington D.C. area, Michael shoots a variety of subjects including travel. He is a member of the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW) and I caught up with him at the SATW Freelance Council meeting in Quebec... MICHAEL SNELL: Tell me a little about yourself and how you came to be a photographer. MICHAEL VENTURA: As a young teenager, I was using my dad's super 8 movie camera to make short films with my neighbor friend in Bethesda, Maryland. The movies were about all kinds of stuff but as I started to hang with some cool kids, who were into skateboarding and surfing, my camera was my entree into their world. I quickly found that most people love to be photographed and I merged into shooting stills with my first Nikon, a Nikkormat. It is a camera that I proudly still have but no longer use. VENTURA: I certainly like to travel and I also shoot a lot of people. The two go well together. I am kept busy by several Washington-area regional magazines and most of their assignments are people oriented. I also enjoy shooting food. Day 1 - San Francisco to Aptos My mother (who is in her eighties) knows what the ride is all about, but has never seen us all on the ride until now. She was in awe. Day 2 - Aptos to King City This morning at 3am we had a rather loud, wet wake up call: The automatic sprinklers went off next to many tents in the area. A dozen or so tents were either sprayed by the sprinklers, or actually doused because the active sprinkler head was underneath their tent! I was awakened by someone who I thought was laughing really loudly but realized that it was a number of people who were shouting about the sprinklers going off and yelling to move the tents. Luckily, we were on an end row and did not get directly affected, but many people had water in their tents and on their clothes! I tried hard to get back to sleep, but by then I was so wide awake it was sort of hard to go back to a sound sleep.
