LIFE OF MOST IMPORTANT WRITTERS OF SPANISH LITERATURE
Félix Lope de Vega Carpio
Lope Félix de Vega was born in Madrid. His teacher was Vicente Espinel and he studied at the Jesuits' Imperial College. From 1583 to 1587 we know of his first affairs with Elena Osorio, called Filis in his poems. In 1588 a rival won her love, wounding Lope's self respect. This episode was shown in different writings, even in La Dorotea (1632). The whole thing ended with a trial and exile from 1588 -the year he married Isabel de Urbina (Belisa)- to 1595. He lived in Valencia and then settled in Alba de Tormes. Back in Madrid in 1598, widowed, he married Juana de Guardoin that year and kept a double home. Then, he met Micaela Luján about 1599 (Camila Lucinda) and, probably, other women. These affairs were reflected in his works until 1608. A year later, the deaths of his wife and son Carlos Felix made him sink into an emotional crisis that caused him to take up a religious career: he became a priest. From 1605 he was the Duke of Sessa's secretary. From their epistle collection we can learn some intimate facts of Lope's life. Firstly, unsteadiness in religious life, that breaks down because of his last strong love, Marta de Nevares (Marcia Leonarda o Amarilis), from 1616 to her death in 1632. Up to this point, Lope's life was at a low because of his daughter's religious career, his son Lopito's death and the running away of his daughter Feliciana. His burial was a public event, and a year later his first biography was published, written by his disciple Juan Perez de Montalban, who noted Lope to be the author of 1800 plays and other religious writings. We think that only 317 are definitely by Lope and 27 just probable. To this sum we need to add several books of poetry, novels and prose narration's. Also epic poems, maybe the most beloved by the author and the less read today.

26. Lope De Vega And Spanish Classical Poetry.
lope de vega and Spanish Classical Poetry an Introduction.
http://www.poetrymagic.co.uk/poets/vega.html
Lope de Vega
Lope de Vega (1562-1635) might be as famous as Shakespeare had the Spanish Armada defeated the English. Born in modest circumstances, Félix Lope de Vega Carpio progressed from child prodigy to celebrated adventurer, courtier, poet and playwright. His life would make a Hollywood swashbuckler several times over. Innumerable affairs, elopements and scandals; military expeditions to the Azores and against Portugal and England; successful courtier and theatre man; retirement to the priesthood, probably genuine, though no hindrance to continuing with the stage and love affairs. The literary achievement is staggering. Lyrics, sonnets, pastorals, verse epics, and some 2,200 plays, of which 500 still survive. And, for all the prodigious output — he could write a play a day — Lope de Vega remains Spain's greatest playwright: many of the plays are still performed and the poetry is part of every Spaniard's education. What was the secret of such output? Belief in an age that was already passing. Just as the Elizabethan renaissance blossomed after England's entry onto the world stage, the golden age of Spanish literature basked in the afterglow of the country's great wealth and prestige. Lope de Vega's plays generally fall into two categories: the 'cloak and sword' depictions of contemporary intrigues and manners, and the historical plays based on Spanish stories and legends. Many of the themes have become familiar in Spanish literature, notably those of family honour and revenge. Essentially, however, Lope de Vega was a master of comedy, and in this way different from his great contemporary, Caldéron de la Barca.

From LoveToKnow 1911
LOPE FELIX DE VEGA CARPIO (1562-1635), Spanish dramatist and poet, was born on the 25th of November 1562 at Madrid . His father and mother, Felix de Vega Carpio and Francisca Hernandez Flores , originally came from the valley of Carriedo in Asturias , where the hamlet of Vega still exists. Lope began his studies at the Theatine college in Madrid, and according to his admiring biographer, Perez de Montalban , his precocity was extraordinary. On leaving college he entered the service of Don Jeronimo Manrique, bishop of Avila , and appears to have then begun the composition of his earlier dramas. He quitted the bishop's service to enter the university of Alcala de Henares , where he devoted himself to what was called philosophy . The date of Lope's matriculation is unknown, as his name does not appear in the university books; but it seems probable that he was in residence between 1576 and 1581. He took part in the expedition to the Azores in 1582, and from 1583 to 1587 was secretary to the marques de las Navas. In February 1588 he was banished for circulating criminal libels against his mistress , Elena Osorio, whom he has celebrated under the name of Filis. He defied the law by returning to Madrid soon afterwards and eloping with Isabel de Urbina, daughter of

, Spanish dramatic poet, founder of the Spanish drama, b. Madrid. Lope, born a peasant, was orphaned at an early age. He wrote the first of his nearly 1,800 plays at 12, and by 25 he was an established playwright and a celebrated wit. He was involved in countless amorous adventures and several scandals, one of which caused him to be banished from Madrid for some years. In 1588 he joined the Spanish Armada and, surviving the campaign, took up his theatrical career and acquired a lifelong patron, the duke of Sessa. Lope's first wife, Isabel de Urbino, was immortalized in his poetry and plays as Belisa. Although he wrote lyric verse and several epic poems (e.g., 1502, a sequel to Ariosto's

1502, a sequel to Ariosto's Orlando Furioso ), his masterworks were his comedias. These graceful and vigorous plays combined the comic, the serious, and the ironic. Major examples are El mejor alcalde, el rey (tr. The King, the Greatest Alcade, El rey don Pedro en Madrid, El castigo sin venganza (tr. 1937). Lope's themes were the varied aspects of honor, human dignity, justice, and the conflict of peasant and nobleman. He developed many genres, including historical drama, cloak-and-dagger love intrigues, and romantic extravaganzas, in addition to writing tragedies and religious plays. He invented a comic type known as el gracioso, which became a stalwart of Spanish theater. In 1609, Lope set down his dramatic precepts in Arte nuevo de hacer comedias La Dorotea (1632), an autobiographical novel begun in his youth. Nearly 500 of Lope's works are extant. Famed for vitality, wit, and ingenuity, they assure his position as the foremost and most prolific Spanish literary innovator. See Four Plays of Lope de Vega (tr. with an introd. by J. G. Underhill, 1936); biography by A. Flores (1930, repr. 1969); studies by A. S. Trueblood (1974) and D. B. Drake (1978).
