- Henry Vaughan 1621-1695 My soul, there is a country
Far beyond the stars,
Where stands a winged sentry
All skillful in the wars; There above noise, and danger,
Sweet Peace sits crowned with smiles,
And One born in a manger Commands the beauteous files. He is thy gracious Friend, And - O my soul, awake! - Did in pure love descend To die here for thy sake. If thou canst get but thither, There grows the flower of Peace, The Rose that cannot wither, Thy fortress, and thy ease. Leave then thy foolish ranges, For none can thee secure But One, Who never changes, Thy God, thy life , thy cure.

Henry Vaughan Walk, Talybont-on-Usk
The Henry Vaughan Walk is a gentle stroll through the scenic, historic and poetic landscape of the Talybont Valley. Due to land management and historic features, there are 5 STILES and ONE SHORT FLIGHT OF STONE STEPS on this route. Wherever possible, walk-through kissing gates have replaced the stiles. Grading: Least Restrictive Access A detailed 'easier access' version of the walk will be available shortly. It is hoped that a ‘barrier-free’ diversion will also be avaiable in the near future. The route links up with the Brinore Tramroad and Taff Trail at Talybont-on-Usk. More details of the walk are available in the Henry Vaughan Walk lealfet. This leaflet can be picked up in Talybont-on-Usk or at local information centres. Location The walk starts from the centre of Talybont-on-Usk ( location map ). The Henry Vaughan Walk leaflets shows the route.

[George Herbert 'The Collar']
Introduction: Characteristics of Metaphysical poetry
Donne and Herbert
A verse may finde him, who a sermon flies,
And turn delight into a sacrifice. Donne's Holy Sonnet 'Batter my Heart' and Herbert's 'The Collar' are both poems about the struggle to maintain faith in God, and a comparison of the two will illustrate some of Herbert's particular characteristics.
Donne's 'Batter My Heart' shows the poet involved in a deep-rooted and desperate struggle with his own soul. He almost seems to doubt whether God exists at all, and the power of the diction and imagery is indicative of serious turmoil. In the opening line Donne writes, Batter my heart, three person'd God; (p.85)

It’s Christmas!
The True Christmas
So stick up ivy and the bays
And then restore the heathen ways.
Green will remind you of the spring,
Though this great day denies the thing,
And mortifies the earth and all
But your wild revels , and loose hall
Could you wear flowers , and roses strow
Blushing your breasts’ warm snow
That very dress your lightness will
Rebuke, and wither at the ill. The brightness of this day we owe Not unto music masque nor show Nor gallant furniture , nor plate But to the manger’s mean estate. His life while here, as well as birth Was but a check to pomp and mirth And all man’s greatness you may see Condemned by his humility Then leave your open house and noise To welcome him with holy joys And the poor shepherd’s watchfulness: Whom light and hymns from Heaven did bless. What you abound with, cast abroad To those that want , and ease your load. Who empties thus, will bring more in;
