Nikola Vaptsarov From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Nikola Vaptsarov Bulgarian 7 December 23 July ) was a Bulgarian poet, communist and revolutionary. He was born in Bansko to a Bulgarian militant father and a Protestant mother. Trained as a machine engineer at the Naval Machinery School in Varna , later Naval Academy, he worked machinist jobs most of his life and wrote in his spare time. His only released book of poetry is Motoring Verses (1940). Because of his underground communist activity against the government of Boris III and the German troops in Bulgaria, he was arrested and executed by a firing squad In 1949, the Bulgarian Naval Academy was renamed Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy . In 1952, he received posthumously the International Peace Award. His Selected Poems were published in London in 1954, by , translated into English with a foreword by British poet Peter Tempest. His poetry has been translated in more than 50 languages throughout the world. Vaptsarov Peak in eastern Livingston Island Antarctica is named after the famous Bulgarian poet.

The Poems of Nikola Vaptsarov Nikola Vaptsarov was born on December 7, 1909 in the small town of Bansko at the foot of the Pirin Mountains in Bulgaria. He was shot by the fascists on 23 July 1942. Vaptsarov had begun to write poetry early in his youth and wanted to study literature in the university, but since he could not afford a university education he took up work as a machine room mechanic in a paper mill. Earlier as a sailor he had come into contact with revolutionary Marxism and which fuelled his radical ideas which were drawn from the revolutionary traditions of Bulgarian folk and nationalist literature. In the factory he undertook to organise the workers for action. It was far from an easy task as fascism was tightening its grip over Bulgaria and was specially targetting the labour movement. Besides brutal suppression of the movement there was a torrential press campaign aimed at demoralising, disarming and dividing the people. Vaptsarov remarks on this in one of his poems thus: ‘What a struggle it was To awaken The life in the those people
