When my fluency in the artificial languaged attained a level where I felt I should translate something, of course I wanted to translate Jack. But Jack has often been accused of being relclusive. This reputation accrued from his seldom bothering to attend major SF events. Yet when I went to contact him with the idea of leasing translation rights, I made contact easliy. How? I looked him up in the telephone directory. When I called, Jack answered the phone himself. And we made a deal in two minutes flat. And later I even got invited to his home. So much for his being a recluse. If you like, visit my translation site Mistera Sturno for three Vance short stories in Esperanto. Please go check out the Vance Integral Edition . Book Description
Rejoin Myron Tany and the crew of the space freighter Glicca as they ply their way from planet to planet, star to star, and adventure to adventure. Each of them is there by chance, and each has a secret quest. From one world to the next, they will chase their dreams of revenge and fulfillment.
Book Review
“Now in his seventh decade of writing sf, Vance shows no sign of stinting either his impeccable style or storytelling mastery. Vance makes his story a vehicle for inventing distinctive alien cultures and unforgettably vivid characterizations.” Booklist "The sequel to SFWA Grand Master Vance's Ports of Call ( 1998) continues the adventures of Myron Tany in a headlong rush of droll vignettes in the spirit, if not with the depth, of Gulliver's Travels. Abandoned by his great-aunt for dawdling while piloting her space-yacht toward the distant world of Naharius, Myron now handles cargo aboard the interstellar freighter Glicca for Capt. Adair Maloof and his slightly shady crew and its passengers. The freighter wanders wherever its cargo may take it, guided by the frequently incorrect 'Handbook of the Planets'. Along the way Myron learns about "lurulu," "a special word from the language of myth," which may best be translated as the achievement of your heart's desire." -

Jack Vance, curmudgeon
Posted by Cory Doctorow, May 28, 2002 5:40 PM permalink Jack Vance interviewed on SciFi.com. He's old, he's blind, he's cranky, but lovable for all that: I don't read other science fiction. I don't read any at all. I haven't been to a movie since somebody gave me free tickets to Star Wars, which I went to. It's just I have an utter revulsion to being part of an audience. Sitting there in an audience and everybody sniffling at once and everybody laughing at once. Everybody's valves being turned on at the same time. I just feel like I'm going to some mass prostitution. I feel soiled sitting in an audience. I do read books. I suppose it's more or less the same thing, but at least I'm alone and I'm an individual. I can stop anytime I want, which I frequently do. But I just despise mass media. As I say, I never ever look at science fiction. I don't even know what's going on. I know [Robert] Silverberg, of course, but I haven't read any of his stuff. And Poul Anderson, who was a dear friend of mine, I read one of his stories once because he happened to be in a little book produced by Ballantine. There were four stories in it. One was by me. But essentially the book was Poul's and mine, and Poul had a very good story in there. It dealt with some mermaids and his command of the underwater life was beautiful to me. Link Discuss Thanks

Jack Vance, an appreciation
Introduction
Jack Vance has been crafting fiction since 1945, when his first published short story, The World Thinker I was personally introduced to Jack's work in 1984 when I chanced upon a copy of his Cugel's Saga belonging to an acquaintance of mine. I immediately fell in love with it and sought out more work, I can still say I have not read all of his material. Novels like Take My Face and Vandals of the Void still elude me and there are several short stories of his I have missed out on. Nonetheless, I consider myself to be "well read" when it comes to his work, and on this basis, I have felt it opportune to delineate the various matters which make him a most satisfying read. I am by no means well read in the concomitant field of science-fiction/fantasy. My personal library numbers about 500 in this regard and so, I will draw no comparisons between Vance and other authors of this ilk. There are other, possibly superior writers out there, but, as a personal liking is by itself subjective, any such comparison obviously is slated as an opinion. This essay will basically be concerned with the legion elements which make up the Vancian style, and not a few criticisms are ignored either. With this arguably didactic prelude complete, let us move on.
The Style
Much has been said and written on the style of Jack Vance. He imbues every scene, every character, every sunset or brook flowing in a long-forgotten forest with a poesy that is captivating as well as mildly off-putting for the newcomer. In the

Lurulu has been described as being "picaresque". Um, I don't think so. According to Dictionary.Com, "picaresque" is defined as:
    1. Of or involving clever rogues or adventurers. 2. Of or relating to a genre of usually satiric prose fiction originating in Spain and depicting in realistic, often humorous detail the adventures of a roguish hero of low social degree living by his or her wits in a corrupt society. Myron Tany, the hero of Ports of Call is back, but I would hardly call him a rogue or "of low social degree", although the "living by his wits" part is certainly true. I have never read Ports of Call , and although I want to read it, it is not necessary to the enjoyment of Lurulu . What IS "lurulu"? "A special word from the language of myth," says Captain Maloof of the good ship Glicca, who "rescues" Tany from the backwater planet where his foolish aunt and her gigolo-boyfriend had marooned him. "Lurulu" would be a poignant, indefinable emotion of harmony and completion. On second thought, there are plenty of rogues surrounding Tany, but we see growth in this rather feckless young man as he and the other voyagers on the trampship Glicca travel the Gaean Reach. The camaraderie between Tany, Maloof, and the other two crewmen, Isel Wingo and Fay Schwatzendale, grows even as we see the differing, and occasionally diametrically opposed personalities of each of the colleagues.
