Executive summary: The Dying Earth Military service: U.S. Merchant Marines (WWII) Author Jack Vance is legendary for his wry wit, his grand use of language, and most especially for the fantastically envisioned worlds and cultures that populate his tales. Although Vance balks at being called a science fiction writer, he is credited for helping define the field during its early "Golden Age". In the sixty years since he published his first story, "The World Thinker", in 1945, he has authored roughly 150 novels, novellas, and short stories. His most popular works remain The Dying Earth Lynonesse Gaean Reach , and Big Planet . The recipient of virtually every award presented in the sci-fi/fantasy field, Vance has also inspired generations of science fiction and fantasy authors including Dan Simmons Gene Wolfe Iain Banks , Peter F. Hamilton and Alastair Reynolds to name a few. Vance himself continues to inspire by remaining an active writer well into his 80s.

24. A Visit To Jack Vance
How one reader got to spend a day with his favorite writer, and what they said and did.
http://homepage.mac.com/joebergeron/jackvance.html
Jack Vance is my favorite writer. What follows is an essay I wrote which was published in one of the progress reports for Magicon, the Orlando World Science Fiction Convention in 1992, at which Jack was Guest of Honor. A Visit to Jack Vance by Joe Bergeron When I was a dreamy teenager I picked up the Lancer edition of The Dying Earth and was immediately lost in its sensual pleasures. While it became one of my favorite books, for some reason I didn't read any other Vance for a long time. I had the feeling that in The Dying Earth I had read Vance's masterpiece, and that anything else must inevitably be a disappointment. Luckily for that benighted boy, in 1980 my friend Terry Sisk (Graybill) acquainted me with books like the Demon Princes and Tschai series. I became a Vance collector, reading and loving everything I could find. I tried my hand at Vance-related art, but an early painting based on The Dying Earth failed to satisfy me. I desisted until Araminta Station appeared in 1987. My painting of Glawen and Sessily seemed good enough that I thought Jack Vance himself might be interested in seeing it. I wrote to him and included a photograph of the painting. He replied with a hand-written letter of praise. Encouraged, I wrote a longer letter that talked about his writing. He answered that if I was ever in his area I should come and stay at his house (my emphasis)! I'd been looking for an excuse/opportunity to visit Oakland for some time, there to visit a female of distinctly Vancean charm. The thought of combining that mission with a visit to Jack Vance was irresistible.

Among his devotees, the perennial question arises: of all the Master's works, what to choose when one wishes to introduce him to a new reader? The variety of answers delineates the subsects within the broad, and occasionally genteelly contentious, universe of Vance aficionados. Those who like best his decidedly non-Tolkienesque fantasies will recommend the Lyonesse trilogy. Fans of space opera will plump for the muscular saga of revenge and retribution spread over the five volumes of The Demon Princes . Lovers of planetary romances will offer Big Planet or the four sequential novels that combine in Tschai: Planet of Adventure . Those with a taste for far-future picaresque will hold high their tattered copies of The Dying Earth
Lurulu

The tale is a continuation of 1997's Ports of Call wherein began the interstellar peregrinations of Myron Tany. The Glicca wanders from planet to planet, taking on and discharging cargoes, while the crew visits taverns to sample varieties of bitter ale and more potent beverages like Ponchoo Punch. It is a pageant of worlds, some civilized, some wild, some hospitable to strangers, some less welcoming to the traveler's knock.

Jack Vance: Portrait of the Artist as a Mad Poet
I know this is an inauspicious way to begin an essay on a favorite author; even so, I wish to express my most profound apologies to Mr Vance for what follows. You see, I am about to indulge in a practice that writers of fiction abhor, but that their readers can not resist. Worse, I am about to do it in public. This heinous practice is called "Looking for the Author in His Characters." While any authors who may be reading this recover their poise, I'll take a moment to explain to my fellow readers why this practice is so roundly detested by the professional fiction writer. In the course of a long career, a writer will invent countless fictional characters of varying viewpoints. The operative word is "fictional". You wouldn't think that would need much explanation, so it is surprising how often authors are assumed to endorse the views expressed by their characters, no matter how wild or improbable. As they say in Dogpatch, "it ain't necessarily so." On the other hand, however, 'tain't necessarily not so, neither!

The Languages of Pao by Jack Vance
[This is one of an ongoing series of posts about linguistics in science fiction. Fair warning: I'm going to spoil the ending (and the beginning, and the middle).] Among the science fiction stories containing linguistic ideas, perhaps the best-known is Jack Vance ’s 1958 novel The Languages of Pao . Unlike some other stories I’ve written about in which the linguistics is secondary, The Languages of Pao is first and foremost about a particular idea from linguistic theory—it’s a novel-length exploration of a particularly strong version of the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis (hereafter SWH), the idea that our patterns of thought are affected by the features of the language we speak. As far as I can tell, most linguists don't believe this hypothesis (at least not in its strong form), but it makes for an interesting speculative starting point for a science fiction novel. In the first chapter of the novel, Vance immediately focuses on the language spoken on the planet Pao, even before any characters are introduced: The language of Pao was derived from Waydalic, but molded into peculiar forms. The Paonese sentence did not so much describe an act as it presented a picture of a situation. There were no verbs, no adjectives; no formal word comparison such as

Jack Vance
by Patrick Hudson Jack Vance is the pre-eminent voice in contemporary fantasy; few other fantasy writers have shown his range of vision, depth of imagination and control of words. His influence is seen in writers such as Dan Simmons , Gene Wolfe, Iain M. Banks, Peter F. Hamilton and Alastair Reynolds . He has had an incredibly prolific and lengthy career, working in many genres - this article concentrates on his SF and fantasy, but Vance was a noted contributor to the 'Ellery Queen' series and was awarded the Edgar Award in 1961 for his mystery novel The Man In The Cage . Even with that limitation, the broad view is difficult to encompass.
Straight biography isn't hard. He was born John Holbrook Vance in 1916. His parents separated when he was very young, and he went with his siblings and mother to live with his maternal grandparents on a ranch in rural California. Vance had an idyllic rural childhood, and the love of the outdoors that he learnt in these early years has remained a strong element of his work.
The young Vance read voraciously and wrote poetry from his teens. He read

- Vance's Fantasy version of August 29, 2006 : all links checked on January 22, 2005, or later. When any one of these documents is revised, I change the date. Warning: The last changes to this document were because I discovered that Firefox, now a widely used browser, didn't show a number of the characters properly. In rectifying that, I may have removed some ellipses. It is possible that some of the quotations have words omitted, and should have ellipses. I'll check that as soon as I can. If you haven't read a Vance book, but plan to, and don't want to know what happens in advance, perhaps you should stop reading. However, I don't think Vance is much read for his plots, and you can read all of these documents without getting much of Vance's wonderful way with words, or his wit. Read on, then, if you wish! This is an unfinished document. It could stand re-writing, and it doesn't treat all of Vance's fantastic fiction. I am working on a comparison with Patricia A. McKillip
