Jack Vance
21 Jan 2004 08:24 American author of science fiction fantasy and mysteries (the last as either John Holbrook Vance or various pseudonyms). For more than forty years now, Vance has been writing wonderful and remarkable prose, which I can best characterize as "elegantly contrived" - he fills it with unusual words and elaborate constructions and often enough a slightly ironic tone. It almost flaunts its studied, artificial, utterly uncolloquial character, but it always says exactly what he wants it to, and always says it better than any other construction could have. Irony notwithstanding, he can use it to evoke any emotion he pleases. No one else writes anything quite like it, though Quine has something of the same character of elegance and deliberate artificiality (who was it who said "All art is artifice"?), and some of his humorous passages recall Ernest Bramah Mike Berro , who is an aficionado of both, tells me that Vance, in correspondence, recalls reading Bramah at about the time he wrote The Dying Earth.

Never should a man enter a building of glass or metal, or a spaceship, or a submarine, without a small shock of astonishment; never should he avoid an act of passion without a small sense of effort. We of the Institute receive an intensive historical inculcation; we know the men of the past, and we have projected dozens of possible future variations, which, without exception, are repulsive. Man, as he exists now, with all his faults and vices, a thousand gloriously irrational compromises between two thousand sterile absolutes is optimal. Or so it seems to us who are men.'

by Nick Gevers With the Vance Integral Edition (VIE - for full details see the foot of this page), a complete library of the superb works of Jack Vance, now in the process of being compiled, a retrospective consideration of Vance's remarkable career may be useful. This is one reader's view, a necessarily brief and summary glimpse of one of modern literature's great panoramas of the fantastic. AN OVERVIEW Fifty years have passed since the publication of Jack Vance's first book, The Dying Earth . Then and in the decades since, Vance, a peripatetic, outgoing, jazz-loving Californian, has regaled and enriched SF and Fantasy with, among many other wonders, the following:
  • The Dying Earth, an Earth of two billion years hence, where a moribund red sun wanly illuminates the baroque savagery of feuding wizards, guileful monsters, and glib tricksters;
  • Big Planet, where countless communities of often murderous eccentrics live in scattered profusion, rich in perverse villainy;
  • Pao, whose innumerable fatalistic peasants are being remade through re-engineering of the very language they speak;

A Few Words About Jack Vance
(My apologies for the length of this page: Jack Vance is impossible to describe briefly; more to the point, he wants many illustrative quotations, and even then we glance off the exact stroke of the essencean observation that is an "in" jest.)
When one looks at Vance's oeuvre, the numbers alone become daunting. Vance has been writing books for over half a century and, just in our fields, already has outhe is the only of my five-star authors still producingwell over two score novels and about a dozen and a half (depending on how one counts) collections of short stories. With such an output, not every single work is going to be a masterpiece, but an amazing many are, and most of the rest are very good; I reckon there are not over two or at most three clunkers (virtually all very early work) in the lot.
(Besides all the books in our fields, Vance has also written over a dozen mystery/crime novels, one of which won an Edgarthe mystery-fiction equivalent of the Hugoand several of which were printed under the "Ellery Queen" byline.)

By Kathie Huddleston ew can deny the impact Jack Vance has had on the fields of science fiction and fantasy. According to The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction , Vance is "a landscape artist, a gardener of worlds" with "a genius of place." That genius has led him to write incredible tales about amazing worlds for over 50 years. Born as John Holbrook Vance in 1916, Vance held down a variety of jobs before he published his first story, "The World Thinker," in 1945 in TWS . As the author of over 60 novels, Vance is credited with helping to define the genres of science fantasy and the planetary romance. Significant series include The Dying Earth Big Planet Gaean Reach and Lyonesse . He is presently working on a sequel to his recent novel
