Foundations: Hal Clement's Heavy Planet and A.E. Van Vogt's The World of Null-A
      Reviewed by Walter Chaw
9 June 2003 H al Clement's 1979 novel, Mission of Gravity is one of the tent poles of hard science fiction, fashioning an oblong world, Mesklin, where polar gravity reaches into the low 700g-range while counteracting centrifugal force at its equator allows for a more human-friendly 3g. When human explorers lose a probe at one of the planet's crushing poles, they enlist a crew of native sentient millipede sailors on a quest across their home world on a search and recovery mission. Though Frank Herbert's Dune series (or Niven's "Known Space") is the better-known planet-maker, Clement's work is at once less messianic and more thoughtful: less epic fantasy and more speculative, in the best sense of the word. The strength of the piece is its clarity and wide accessibility, focusing as it does on the interaction between human handlers and their Mesklinite wards who, as it happens, have an extremely similar psychological constitution to the explorers of Earth's Age of Discovery. In its way, then, Clement's republished anthology, Heavy Planet is both science fiction and historical fiction mining the familiar for the possible in ways that any successful fiction must. It's seldom given over to technical jargon, relying instead on fairly elementary physics to dictate the twists and hardships faced by alien Barl and the intrepid crew of the Bree. The best moment is its quietest, as a human explorer lifts Barl from the ground to gain a better vantage point on top of a human vehicle: the good intentions of the man at direct odds with the instincts and phobias of a creature that has spent its life in mortal terror of heights and falls.

Article Excerpt
"He felt a keen excitement attracting vibrant minds and turning them to the pursuit of a higher human purpose." IF A.E. VAN VOGT had written a story of his own life, he would perhaps have started with this line. In a sense, it could very well have served as his epitaph. Van Vogt spent much of his life as a professional science fiction writer, but he also had a number of other passionate interests, including general semantics. He wrote several novels that used general semantics principles to arm his protagonists in their struggle against chaos, barbarity, and tyranny. Many IGS members, including myself, were first attracted to general semantics through those novels.

A.E. van Vogt was born in 1912 on a farm was in Manitoba, south of Winnipeg, Canada. When he was 10, they moved to Morden, Manitoba, and then to Winnipeg, where his father became manager of the Holland-America steamship line. A.E. van Vogt worked as a truck driver, farmhand and statistical clerk. Between jobs he began to write. While in Ottawa, he took a course in writing. He wrote his first story and entered a contest in True Story magazine. His first SF story was inspired by John W. Campbell's Who Goes There? and his second story, "Black Destroyer," made the cover of the July 1939 issue of Astounding Science Fiction and won first place in the reader voting. Turned down by the local draft board, he was able to get a job working for the Department of National Defense in Ottawa. In the evenings, he wrote Slan , published as a four-part serial in Astounding Science Fiction . Quitting in 1941 and moving to Farm Point, Quebec, he wrote several short stories and then The Weapon Shop He and his wife, Edna Mayne Hull, moved to Los Angeles in 1944, a hub of all kinds of religions, cults and sciences. He met L. Ron Hubbard in 1945. Dianetics was to influence both him and his wife for many years. A.E. van Vogt died in January 2000.

A. E. Van Vogt on John W. Gallishaw's rules for Writing
a synopsis by L J Hurst
Write a story in scenes of about 800 words, which procedes through five stages:
  • Let the reader know the location of the scene
  • Establish the purpose of the main character or the purpose of that scene
  • The interaction of his trying to accomplish that purpose
  • Make it clear: did he or did he not accomplish that purpose
  • In all the early scenes: no matter whether he achieves that purpose or not, things are going to get worse
Every type of story has its own type of fictional sentence
    • 'confession' stories have to have emotion in every sentence
    • in science fiction you have to have a little bit of a 'hangup' in each sentence: the author furnishes information, but each sentence in itself has a little hangup in it
This information comes from Charles Platt's interview with A. E. Van Vogt, in WHO WRITES SCIENCE FICTION (Savoy Books)

A.E. (Alfred Elton) van Vogt (1912-2000) is one of the most widely read science-fiction writers in the world. Born in Manitoba, Canada and a naturalized U.S. citizen, Van, as he was known to legions of friends and fans, lived in Hollywood, California for many years the last two decades with his second wife, Lydia Brayman van Vogt, who survives him. One of the principal architects of the "Golden Age of Science Fiction" with his stories in John W. Campbell Jr.'s Astounding Science Fiction magazine in the 1940s, van Vogt produced, over a span of half a century, 65 novels and collections, 3 non-fiction books, and 92 short stories. Among his most well-remembered science fiction novels are SLAN, the WEAPON SHOPS books, the NULL-A books, and THE VOYAGE OF THE SPACE BEAGLE. Numerous films and television series have been inspired by his stories. His stories have been adapted on THE OUTER LIMITS and ROD SERLING'S NIGHT GALLERY. In 1996, he was honored with the Grand Master Award by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America and with induction into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame by the University of Kansas and the Center for the Study of Science Fiction. 77. The Weapon Makers By A. E. Van Vogt
The Weapon Makers by A.E. van vogt. I think it is his best, and one of the few worth reading. If you ve read one, you ve read most of them.
    http://alumni.caltech.edu/~mcelroy/review/books/aewmake.html
The Weapon Makers by A.E. van Vogt I think it is his best, and one of the few worth reading. If you've read one, you've read most of them. So you should read the best ones, and this is probably the best of the best. It is really a sequel to The Weapon Shops of Isher . But I read this one first, and it stands alone quite well. The protagonist, the Van Vogtian superman, is Robert Hedrock. He was made immortal through an accident. But being extremely altruistic, he has spent over five thousand years trying to duplicate the accident, and thus make immortality available to all mankind. Being of a libertarian nature, Hedrock founded the Weapon Shops. In these shops, common citizens can acquire powerful weapons that can only be used in self-defense, to prevent them from being oppressed. Furthermore, we find out in this novel, that he also is responsible for the ruling Imperial dynasty. Thus, he is involved in both ends of the government. The crux of the story is Hedrock's interaction with Innelda, the young, beautiful, intelligent, strong-willed empress. A strong love-hate relationship here. He finds out that the Empire is close to discovering an interstellar space drive. Innelda sees this as a threat to Imperial power. Hedrock sees it as a way for mankind to progress and grow. Conflict is inevitable. Almost as an aside, aliens appear on the scene to evaluate humankind. The challenge here is to make Hedrock seem as intelligent as he is supposed to be. An IQ of around 278 is mentioned, so high as to almost be meaningless (in another story, I believe van Vogt mentions an IQ of around 800. Completely meaningless.). But van Vogt brings it off very well. From his actions and wit, you can almost believe that the guy is super-intelligent. He keeps one step ahead of both the Weapon Shops and the Empire in terms of technology, because he is so smart, and to protect his identity. Along the way, we are treated to great ideas in terms of dimensional travel, limited time travel, and "magnifiers" to make things giant-sized, although at a huge cost in aging (which is less of a problem if you are an immortal).
