van Vogt, Alfred Elton (A.E.) (1912-2000) Author. Winnipeg-born A.E. van Vogt wrote for confessional and true detective magazines before he sold his first science fiction short story, Black Destroyer , to Astounding Science Fiction. Within a few years he decided to quit his job with the Department of National Defence to pursue writing full-time. He is regarded as one of the authors who ushered in the Golden Age of science fiction. He wrote many short stories for the magazines of the time, many of which were stitched together later to form what he called “fix-ups.” He moved to California shortly after his career change, into a house evidently just below the HOLLYWOOD sign. After WWII he found himself inspired to write grander themes, often involving entire systems of knowledge or politics. Some of his more well-known works are Slan , the Null-A trilogy and The Book of Ptath . Among his other honours, he is one of the four inaugural members of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame. back to top

Obituary: A. E. Van Vogt
Independent, The (London) Feb 2, 2000 by Jack Adrian A. E. VAN VOGT was one of the last survivors of a coterie of young, or youngish, writers - Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Theodore Sturgeon, L. Sprague de Camp, the Britisher Eric Frank Russell, Clifford Simak and L. Ron Hubbard - who in the late 1930s transformed science fiction from tales of whizz-bang galactic pyrotechnics and "crashing suns" into a genre of mood, character, subtlety, psychological development and reasonably sure-footed plotting. In short, the literature of ideas.

From SCIFIPEDIA A. E. van Vogt ) A Canadian -born writer who depended on dream-like logic to create future worlds and characters, Alfred E. van Vogt was also the first major science fiction writer to convey libertarian points of view in his work. One of the major discoveries of John W. Campbell , the editor of Astounding Science Fiction , van Vogt became known for stories featuring either supermen or super-human aliens in stories told with a rococo approach to plot development. Van Vogt's first four sales to Astounding , beginning in , were novelettes dealing with super-human aliens. Then in he introduced the first of his supermen in his first novel, Slan . The novel opens with the persecution of a young boy, Jommy Cross, for reasons he does not understand. Cross is smuggled into hiding where he grows up to discover that there are at least two types of "slans" mutant human beings who were genetically engineered for telepathy and super-human intelligence by a scientist named Samuel Lann. (Their name is derived from the abbreviation S. Lann.) Jommy, as it turns out, is destined to become the ruler of the world state that has hitherto suppressed him and his kind (who have infiltrated the government and actually run it). Never before had science fiction produced a novel that so successfully drew on suspense techniques to provide a vision of self-empowerment. Not as rococo as some of van Vogt's later work

In comparison, Aristotelian means a two valued logic (only black or white). Any additions, comments or corrections are welcome. Since 1945 A. E. Van Vogt has been called Van instead of his first name, Alfred. A. E Van Vogt died on January 26, 2000 at age 87. He had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease for the past 10 years. He died of complications of pneumonia. I hope that he will always be remembered for the greatest reading experiences, ever. What Is
General Semantics?
I had my own definition for general semantics after reading the Null-A books, but the Institute of General Semantics (IGS) gives a better definition. Includes links. General Semantics and Roger Russell I joined the ISGS after learning it actually existed and wasn't just something in The World of Null-A. General Semantics and McIntosh Laboratory Gordon Gow and Dirk Roos of McIntosh Laboratory were both on the board of directors of the ISGS.

Good (2/5)
I first read this in 1975 and most recently on the 2nd October 2005. In "The Empire Of The Atom", Vogt introduced us to the world 10,000 years from now. It's world where bows and arrows and space technology live side by side. Once mankind had a star-spanning civilisation. But then the alien Riss came and their were desperate battles against them. Finally in resisting the Riss, mankind's great civilisation collapsed. Now mankind relies on left-over, handed-down technology to allow the construction of space craft. The engineers are completely ignorant of the vast body of knowledge that underlies the apparently simple processes. Now the Riss have come back and a profoundly weakened hnman race must face them. Lord Clane Linn must battle them to save all the planets on which humankind survive. However he must also tame the ferocious warlord Czinczar, and concurrently defeat the murderous plots of the Lord Advisor and his hidden supporters. Really rather good for its time. Another reviewer mentioned that it was reminiscent of Asimov a. And indeed it is. It's a product of the same era. I read it as a young adult and it didn't have quite the impact of "The Weapon Shops Of Isher", but it was still rather good. However, I've always found his writing very odd and have failed (not that I've much tried) to quite work out why that is. Oh, and it is, being from the '50s, somewhat sexist.

The World of Null-A - A. E. van Vogt A. E. van Vogt (1912-2000) I doubt that our literary tastes are genetically programmed. Probably, chance events are equally important in influencing our choices. Be that as it may, at age 13 I became a passionate reader of science fiction stories. The triggering event was the birth of a Swedish science fiction magazine, "Häpna!" (The name means "Be amazed!", no doubt a reference to the magazine "Astounding Science Fiction" The first issue in March 1954 contained some riveting stories. In one of them, "Repulsion Factor" by Charles Eric Maine, a scientist has invented teleportation: a physical object is disassembled in a transmitter and sent as information to a receiver where it is reassembled (just as in Star Trek). A murderer uses this device to create a copy of himself by using two receivers, intending to let "his copy" take the rap. - In addition to being an exciting story, it made me thoroughly confused over the real nature of identity and consciousness.

Jan Fills Dr. Freudine's Mind With Mutant Slan Terror
Sep 11 '03 (Updated Apr 01 '05)
Pros
action-packed story with filled-out characters to love or hate
Cons loose threads at the end. The Bottom Line There wasn't one animal or vegetation mentioned. The future?! Full Review Author's NoteDr. Freudine is a fictional psychiatrist. You can find all Dr. Freudine installments on profile page. When the story left off, the doctor escaped a maniacal Irish at a bar to use the restroom. I am deep in thought as I come out of the women's bathroom, but suddenly a "Yoo hoo, Doc!" yanks me back into the world. I follow the voice and groan. I'm being flagged down by none other than Jan sitting at the bar of The Cat and the Fiddle. There's no way to ignore her as she waves a red napkin and gestures to the empty barstool next to her. Hopefully I glance towards the back where girls have surrounded Irish, then sigh and join her. "Are you stalking me?" I ask, unsmiling and refusing to sit. Jan opens her brown eyes wide and sputters with laughter.
