A. E. Van Vogt (1912-2000)
The following information about the late Canadian-born SF writer A. E. Van Vogt was culled from several sources by SF Canada past-president Jean-Louis Trudel. Alfred Elton van Vogt was born in Winnipeg in 1912 and he grew up in Neville and Swift Current, Saskatchewan, as well as in Morden and Winnipeg, Manitoba. His first exposure to SF, at age eleven, was in the Chum Annual that a friend lent him. At fourteen, he purchased the November 1926 issue of Amazing Stories and was hooked. He began his writing career with sales to True Story and Scarlet Confession , but also penned some fifty radio plays for various Canadian stations. His first SF publication, "Black Destroyer," appeared as the cover story in the July 1939 issue of Astounding Science Fiction . Two months earlier, he had married Edna Mayne Hull, after meeting her at a writers' group in Winnipeg. He worked as a clerk in the Department of National Defence from 1939 to 1941, perhaps in one of Ottawa's "temporary" wartime buildings, but it was in a cottage north of Ottawa that he wrote

Black Destroyer
by A. E. Van Vogt
Preface by David Drake You can get an argument as to when the Golden Age of Science Fiction ended. (Well, you can get an argument if you're talking with the right people.) Almost everybody agrees that the Golden Age started with the July, 1939, issue of Astounding , however. That's because its cover story was "Black Destroyer," the first published SF by A. E. Van Vogt.
I didn't know that when I first read the story in Tales of Space and Time , edited by Healy and McComas, when I was thirteen. Back then I didn't know much of anything, about authors or writing or SF. But I knew "Black Destroyer" was amazing, not only for what was in the story (and considered as either adventure or horror, it's a very taut, suspenseful piece) but even more for the implicit background, the sciences and technologies that didn't exist in my adolescent world—or anywhere else outside the story, as I now know.
When I was thirteen, everything was possible. "Black Destroyer" is one of the few stories that gave—and give—form to those infinite possibilities. On and on Coeurl prowled! The black, moonless, almost -starless night yielded reluctantly before a grim reddish dawn that crept up from his left. A vague, dull light it was, that gave no sense of approaching warmth, no comfort, nothing but a cold, diffuse lightness, slowly revealing a nightmare landscape.

E. van Vogt Biography Alfred Elton van Vogt (April 26, 1912 - January 26, 2000) was a Canadian-born science fiction author. After starting his writing career by writing for "true confessions" style pulp magazines, he decided to switch to writing something that he enjoyed: science fiction. His first published science fiction story, Black Destroyer (Astounding Science Fiction, 1939), depicting a fierce, carnivorous alien stalking the crew of an exploration ship was extremely popular and set the style for a number of science fiction films over the years.
He wrote a large number of short stories, many of which were retrospectively patched together into novels, or "fixups" as he called them. Sometimes this was successful (The War against the Rull); other times the disparate stories thrown together made for an incoherent plot (Quest for the Future).
He had always been interested in the idea of all-encompassing systems of knowledgethe characters in his very first story used a system called "Nexialism" to analyse the alien's behaviourand he became interested in the General Semantics of Alfred Korzybski, and wrote three novels on this theme, The World of Null-A and The Pawns of Null-A in the late 1940s, and Null-A Three in the early 1980s. (The term Null-A refers to non-Aristotelian logic).
In the 1950s, he became involved in L. Ron Hubbard's Dianetics and his writing more or less stopped for some years. He resumed writing again in the 1960s.

    News Services, February 2, 2000
LOS ANGELES-A.E. van Vogt, 87, the science fiction writer whose telepathic mutants, superhuman races and dangerous creatures from outer space blazed a trail for the "Alien" films, died Jan. 26 in a nursing home in here. He had Alzheimer's disease. He wrote 38 novels and 47 short-story collections, including such postwar science fiction classics as "Slan," "The Voyage of the Space Beagle," the "World of Null-A" trilogy and "The Weapon Shops of Isher." He was an early proponent of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard's Dianetics theory of self-healing, though he was not a follower of Scientology itself. Both men had been science fiction writers working for the field's leading magazine in the 1940s, Astounding Science Fiction, which created a stir by publishing a Hubbard essay on Dianetics. Paul Levinson, president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, which named Mr. van Vogt a grandmaster of the genre its highest honor in 1997, said: "A.E. van Vogt helped define science fiction by taking it from the Flash Gordon and bug-eyed monster . . . genre it was in the 1930s to the more profound level it is on today, where it considers and debates such issues as the meaning of life.

A.E. van Vogt died in Los Angeles Wednesday. His friend, NASA program manager and strategic planner Professor Jesco von Puttkamer, composed the following memorial to the legendary science fiction author. It is very, very sad to hear that my dear old friend A.E. has passed on. He was a true giant in his field, one of those on whose shoulders others later stood. As a student back in Germany in the '50s, I was the German translator of most of his great books from the Golden Years of SF. I loved him for his sparkling, unmatched imagination and his unique writing style (self-taught from correspondence courses, he once told me), and our later meetings in the U.S. were great moments for me. Book Description
In the 1940s, the Golden Age of science fiction flowered in the magazine Astounding. Editor John W. Campbell, Jr., discovered and promoted great new writers such as A.E. van Vogt, whose novel Slan was one of the works of the era.
Slan is the story of Jommy Cross, the orphan mutant outcast from a future society prejudiced against mutants, or slans. Throughout the forties and into the fifties, Slan was considered the single most important SF novel, the one great book that everyone had to read. Today it remains a monument to pulp SF adventure, filled with constant action and a cornucopia of ideas. This edition has a new introduction by Kevin J. Anderson.
    Book Review
"Over fifty years on from when it first saw print, van Vogt's Slan is still one of the quintessential classics of the field that other SF novels will inevitably be measured against." Charles de Lint
