Born on a farm in Edenburg, a Russian Mennonite community east of Gretna, Manitoba Canada , van Vogt was one of the most popular and highly esteemed science fiction writers of the 1940s, during what is frequently referred to as the genre's Golden Age. After starting his writing career by writing for 'true confession' style pulp magazines like True Story , van Vogt decided to switch to writing something he enjoyed, science fiction Van Vogt's first published SF story, "Black Destroyer" ( Astounding Science Fiction , July 1939), was inspired by The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin . The story depicted a fierce, carnivorous alien stalking the crew of an exploration spaceship. It was the cover story of this issue of Astounding , the issue often described as having ushered in the Golden Age of science fiction . The story became an instant classic and eventually served as the inspiration for a number of science fiction movies. In 1950 it was combined with "War of Nerves" (1950), "Discord in Scarlet" (1939) and "

Review by Aaron Hughes A. E. van Vogt: One can make a strong case that A. E. van Vogt, who passed away on January 26, 2000, was one of the three writers, along with Isaac Asimov and Robert A. Heinlein, who played the most important roles in ushering in the Golden Age of science fiction. Van Vogt's influence on the field was substantial. The stories collected in The Voyage of the Space Beagle were perhaps the first to chronicle the adventures of the crew of a large, military-style starship exploring the universe, and doubtless influenced Gene Roddenberry strongly when he created Star Trek. (The Space Beagle first appeared in Astounding magazine in July 1939, about two years before the first of Eric Frank Russell's tales of the crew of the Marathon, which bear an even stronger resemblance to Star Trek. Earlier recurring stories about spaceship crews I am aware of featured much smaller, less organized bands of adventurers, most notably the two-man team in John W. Campbell, Jr.'s Penton and Blake stories.) One of the Space Beagle stories purportedly inspired the movie Alien - the resemblance was great enough that van Vogt brought a lawsuit against the filmmakers, which reportedly settled for a $50,000 payment. Remembering A. E. van Vogt

The Terminal Experiment won the Nebula Award. But it also, in a way, was one of the saddest. That night, A. E. van Vogt received the really big prize, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America's Grand Master Award, honoring a lifetime of achievement. It should have been a joyous occasion, but it was actually quite tragic to see. Harlan, I'm sure, simply wanted van Vogt, born in 1912, to be honored during his lifetime, and he knew time was running short, but I don't think any of us, prognosticators all, predicted the sad way the future was really going to unfold: that, by the time SFWA got around to bestowing its Lucite obelisk, van Vogt would indeed still be alive but that much of the greatness that had been within him would be gone, stolen by the cruel thief of Alzheimer's. After the awards ceremony, I was surrounded by well-wishers, for which I was very grateful, but it meant I had a hard time making it across the ballroom of the

He [Gilbert Gosseyn] felt himself aloof from the materialism of Earth. In a completely unreligious sense, he longed for spiritual surcease. A knock on the door ended the thought. He opened it and looked at the boy who stood there. The boy said, "I've been sent, sir, to tell you that all the rest of the guests on this floor are in the sitting room." Gosseyn felt blank. "So what?" he asked. "They're discussing the protection of the people on this floor, sir, during the games." "Oh!" said Gosseyn. He was shocked that he had forgotten. The earlier announcement coming over the hotel communicators about such protection had intrigued him. But it had been hard to believe that the world's greatest city would be entirely without police or court protection during the period of the games. [...] "I'll be right there," smiled Gosseyn. "Tell them I'm a newcomer and forgot. And thank you."

E. van Vogt: Science Fantasy's Icon presents a study of select works by van Vogt and some limited biographical data. The main thrust of this book is to explain how, and why, van Vogt's various real life interests were often included in his fiction and nonfiction. Van Vogt went to work immediately after finishing high school in Canada, but he devoted the rest of his life to self-education. Van Vogt believed that his eye sight could be improved by using the William Bates training methods; van Vogt devised a dream/sleep system whereby he was awakened during the night to continue working on stories and increase his writing output; he interviewed males who were deemed to be violent-types; he studied the accumulation of wealth and wrote a book about it; and, van Vogt applied semantics theories to his everyday life and gave public lectures about how words can affect personal mental health as well as communication with others. Belated Reviews #1: A.E. Van Vogt
AE Van Vogt's most popular works appeared in the forties and fifties (after which he was sidetracked). They varied widely and imaginatively in terms of setting, but most typically followed a protagonist of superhuman abilities, or extra-ordinary competence, as he came into his powers. The focus was on the plot and on the plot devices, rather than on the growth of the protagonist: Van Vogt wrote stories that were weak in characterization and character development, for an audience didn't much value them. His best books include Slan (***). An early superior-mutants-in-hiding novel. Slans are the next evolutionary step super-intelligent, telepathic, and possessing betraying (but concealable) antennae. Ordinary humans tend to kill them when they find them as Jommy Cross's parents are killed when he is a child Cross himself escapes, and spends his next years hiding, growing in power (and developing superscientific gizmos), cautiously seeking other Slans. The Weapon Shops of Isher (***). The Earth of the future is one that could be a high-tech dystopia, with an unsentimental Imperial government and largely-unfettered corporations. The weapons shops provide a mitigating, somewhat anarchic counterbalance: They sell weapons which represent better technology than the government can muster, can only be used defensively, and make it very difficult to coerce their users. The story involving a conflict between the Imperium and the weapon shops, some involuntary time travel, and an extremely *lucky* young man who goes to the big city serves primarily as a vehicle for a tour of this future world. A sequel, "The Weapon Makers" (**), focuses upon the secret immortal who works behind the scenes to maintain the balance between the Imperium and the weapon shops, and who only makes a brief appearance in the first book.

The Early Stories of A.E. van Vogt
The most radical and visionary of the writers of the Golden Age of Astounding, Alfred Elton van Vogt, was born on his grandparents' farm in Manitoba, Canada on April 26, 1912. At this time, van Vogt's father and three of his uncles were partners in a general store in the village of Neville, Saskatchewan and his father was studying by correspondence to earn a law degree. Like Isaac Asimov, who developed a case of double pneumonia at the end of his second year from which it was feared he wouldn't recover, van Vogt had an early brush with death. When he was two, he fell from a second-floor window onto a wooden sidewalk, knocked himself unconscious, and remained in a coma for three days. Van Vogt was like Asimov in another regard the original language of this writer-to-be was not English. Until his mother put her foot down on the matter when Alfred was four, it was a dialect of Dutch that was spoken in the van Vogt household. Young Alfred had something of a divided nature. He was an insatiable reader who for many years devoured two books a day and knew early that he wanted to be a writer when he grew up. But there were also moments when he was "an extrovert of extraordinary energy" as he put it in a 1981 memoir entitled "My Life Was My Best Science Fiction Story."

A.E. van Vogt (born 1912)
Canadian/US writer. Van Vogt's work is essentially SF adventure whose protagonists frequently have some superhuman mental powers, derived through mutation or special training. It is this characteristic of wish-fulfillment that has made his stories so popular among adolescent readers. The supreme example of this is van Vogt's first novel, Slan , which follows the growing up a mutant with telepathic powers and enhanced intelligence (a slan), who grows to realise the vital role he will play in society. Nevertheless the stories are laced with ideas atypical and more thoroughly detailed than those used by more simplistic Golden Age writers such as E.E. Smith The Voyage of the Space Beagle has many elements of traditional Space Opera, but is interesting for its examination of shipboard politics, and a pseudo-science similar to the quasi-philosophical movement of General Semantics that van Vogt uses in his most important work, The World of Null-A , and its sequel, The Pawns of Null-A Gilbert Gosseyn (`go sane'), the protagonist of

Reorienting Critics and Readers to the van Vogt Method

The influence of Alfred Elton van Vogt (1912 - 2000) has diminished since its zenith in the late 1940s when the fan community ranked him as high or higher than Heinlein, and when fans coined the phrase 'Fans are Slans' to identify themselves with the advanced yet ostracised next-stage humans in van Vogt's first novel, Slan (1946). His fix-up (stories pieced into a novel), The Voyage Of The Space Beagle (1950), later inspired the original Star Trek series and the movie Alien . In the 1950s, however, van Vogt's popularity began to wane through, according to Algis Budrys; Damon Knight's building a reputation upon the "destruction of A.E. van Vogt." The criticisms hit home. Although his novel The World of Null-A (1948), the first hardcover science fiction novel, had popularised 'General Semantics' and created a market for science fiction in France, Knight's criticism haunted the back of van Vogt's consciousness until he revised it in 1970.

Slan is one of those Golden Age sci fi novels that while being dated, in terms of scientific jargon and ideas, is far more relevant than much of the hamhanded writing published in science fiction, or even literary fiction, these days. Given the civil rights issues involved in the ceaseless War On Terror, and things such as gay rights, the right to die, etc., Slan is as relevant as it was in the days leading up to World War Two, given its many and manifest Nazi parallels. Slan is the legendary first novel, first serially published in four parts in 1940, by Astounding Magazine , and in book form in 1946, by Arkham House , of Canadian science fiction titan A. E. Van Vogt (1912-2000), who was a master of the sort of science fiction short stories that a couple of decades later would play weekly on such early television science fiction shows as The Twilight Zone One Step Beyond , and The Outer Limits , as well as later derivative work such as Marvel comics’ X-Men His mother’s hand felt cold, clutching his.
