There's about a dozen of them. Some of them are better than others, but they're all very enjoyable.
Van Gulik was a Dutch diplomat in China and Japan for many years. A diligent scholar and a very imaginative writer with a gift for detail, Van Gulik adapts Chinese popular stories to the Western mystery genre.
The original Judge Dee stories were like "Columbo" you knew who the bad guys were at the beginning and the suspense was in seeing how they got found out. Van Gulik turns that around and puts the solution at the end because that's what most Western readers are used to.
He downplays the torturing of witnesses, an established practice in Chinese courts, but he keeps one other element unique to Chinese mysteries: the supernatural assistance that the magistrate may get from the deceased.
A provincial magistrate like Judge Dee is detective, prosecutor, defense attorney, judge and jury all rolled into one. His job is to get to the bottom of things. If he wants to know something he says so and people come to the tribunal and kneel down and knock their heads on the floor and say, "This insignificant person is named so and so, and respectfully reports etc. etc." Not a bad way of getting things done if you ask me.

R. H. van Gulik: Diplomat, Orientalist, Novelist
by Henry Wessells The writings of Dutch diplomat and author Robert Hans van Gulik (1910-1967) reveal his considerable talents as a storyteller as well as the conscientious scholarship and varied interests that characterized his life. His nonfiction works cover a broad range of subjects from Chinese culture, folklore, art, and music, such as Chinese Pictorial Art as Viewed by the Connoisseur, Erotic Colour Prints of the Ming Period, and The Gibbon in China. Van Gulik also translated works from Sanskrit and Chinese, was co-author of a vocabulary of the Siksika language of the Blackfoot Indians, and wrote a study on the horse-cult in China and Japan. He is also widely known for his detective fiction, beginning with Dee Goong An : Three Murder Cases Solved by Judge Dee (a translation of a Chinese work), which led him to write a series of seventeen books featuring the Chinese magistrate Judge Dee, from The Chinese Maze Murders to Murder in Canton and the posthumously published Poets and Murder.

A Judge Dee Detective Story
By Robert Van Gulik It's never easy reviewing a classic; obviously it is good or it wouldn't be regarded as such, and if it has just been reprinted then its charm and relevance still exist for readers today. Since its publication in 1958, Robert Van Gulik's enchanting stories about the crime-solving exploits of historical character Judge Dee have delighted readers all over the world. If you haven't met Judge Dee yet, now is a good time to start! In this early novel he has just taken up a post as magistrate in the town of Poo-Yang and soon finds his work cut out for him. He has to solve a rape murder, root out what is going on in a remarkably wealthy Buddhist temple and sort out a complex family feud that dates back years.

. . . as popular author
by Arthur P. Yin, his introduction to the second edition of the biography Robert van Gulik: His Life His Work (New York, 1998)
Robert van Gulik loved the traditional Chinese novels that I read when I was growing up in rural Hong Kong in the early 1950s. The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, The Water Margin, and Ch'i Hsia Wu I (The Seven Heroes and the Five Righteous) were read by every Chinese boy of my generation. These stories were also the basis for local theatrical performances and comic strip serials; their heroes were pictured in cheap prints that we avidly collected. It was through reading these works that we became acquainted with the traditional Chinese tribunal ruled by a magistrate, in his winged cap, surrounded by his retinue of court personnel. They were the inspiration for our games in which we were brave "Brothers of the Green Woods" or members of the Beggars Guild who hated "dog" officials.
The China that van Gulik had lived in, in which I spent my childhood, was a country in transition. The New Territories of Hong Kong still had verdant vegetable fields tended by hand. We swam in natural watering holes and caught shrimp with our bare hands. Water buffalo, peasants, temples, Buddhist monks, bamboo groves: these were everyday sights. This was the age old Chinese landscape that resonates in Chinese poetry and

Robert Van Gulik (Le juge Ti )
