César Vallejo
translated by Clayton Eshleman I will die in Paris with a downpour,
a day which I can already remember.
maybe a Thursday, like today, in autumn.
Thursday it will be, because today, Thursday,
as I prose these lines, I have forced on
my humeri and, never like today, have I turned, with all my journey, to see myself alone. César Vallejo has died, they beat him, all of them, without him doing anything to them; they gave it to him hard with a stick and hard likewise with a rope; witnesses are the Thursdays and the humerus bones, the loneliness, the rain, the roads... Trilce by James Wagner The 77 poems in James Wagner's Trilce are homophonic translations of César Vallejo’s book of the same name, or at least that was the cathartic process Wagner underwent—in creating them, his versions take on a life of their own. “Titling his book Trilce , James Wagner calls attention to the fact that he used the sound structure of Vallejo’s poems as his matrix—a process that has sometimes been called homonymic (or surface) translation and that Wagner called “auralgraph” in his earlier book, the false sun recordings —Rosmarie Waldrop
with illustrations by Derek White 106 pages ISBN 0-9770723-2-0 “Not unlike some of the process in reading Trilce —setting up little boundaries of thought for myself—it struck me too that as in Kafka there is a humor in Vallejo sometimes at his almost saddest—as if in the exaggeration of the plane, emotions are very leveled, i.e., placed next to each other, as equal comrades or equal brothers and sisters—and that, not unlike how Mark Rothko felt about his paintings, James Wagner’s Vallejo ‘translations’ or migrations or journeys feel as though we are walking through objects of emotion, or landscapes of emotion, or contents of emotion. The auralgraphs place a reader truly in the position of being a companion to the poems.” —Michael Burkard "This leaves the translating poet with two options: one, create the best poem possible using the same ‘information’ as the original author; or two, forget the information and try to capture the essential. Most poetry translations fall into the first category, James Wagner’s

http://www.panhala.net/Archive/Dios.html
Dios I feel God travel with me,
when the sun sets and on the sea,
together we walk as it grows dark.
We are all together but walk like orphans. But I feel God and he gives color
to my life. He is kind and sad,
like those who attend the sick and dying;
He whispers like a lover in distress.
His heart must hurt for his creation. Oh, my God, though I have just come to you,
I love so much as it grows dark,
and in the balance within the heart,
I weigh and weep for frail Creation. And you, what do you weep for … you who love with your immense and whirling heart? I consecrate you, God, because you love so much; because you never smile; because your heart must ache as Time continues. ~ Cesar Vallejo~ ed. by Robert Bly, original translation by Robert Bly, version by Jose Orez) Web archive of Panhala postings: www.panhala.net/Archive/Index.html To subscribe to Panhala, send a blank email to Panhala-subscribe@yahoogroups.com To unsubscribe from Panhala, send a blank email to Panhala-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com music link (left button to play, right button to save)

A day I already have the memory of.
I will die in Paris - it doesn't depress me -

It'll be Thursday because today's Thursday.

Although he published only three books of poetry during his lifetime, he is considered one of the great poetic innovators of the 20th century. Always a step ahead of the literary currents, each of his books was distinct from the others and, in its own sense, revolutionary. Clayton Eshleman and Jos© Rubia Barcia 's translation of "The Complete Posthumous Poetry of C©sar Vallejo" won the National Book Award for translation in 1979.

Trilce Los heraldos negros (The Black Heralds). After Trilce Vallejo wrote stories, essays, a novel, and several plays, but did not collect any of his subsequent poems for book publication. Since his death, these poems have usually been referred to as the Poemas humanos after the title of one of the posthumous volumes. The Shearsman edition of his poetry is the most complete one available in English, is fully bilingual, and is based on the very latest scholarship. Each edition comes with an introduction, and comprehensive notes for the English-speaking reader. The translations are by the Irish poet, and award-winning translator, Michael Smith, and the Peruvian scholar Valentino Gianuzzi.
Biography
After a series of teaching jobs and work as a journalist, Vallejo left Peru for good in the middle of 1923. By that time, his deeply loved mother was dead and a passionate love affair had ended acrimoniously. Vallejo went to Paris. There, with little money, no contacts and no French, he somehow managed to eke out a living with journalism and some teaching. In time, of course, he made friends, and it was in Paris that he became politically radical. He studied Marxism and visited Russia three times in the 1930s to observe for himself the great Soviet experiment in social engineering. And he married a French girl, Georgette Philippart.

Heraldos negros (1918) blend symbolism and caustic observation in terse classical form. He was imprisoned on false charges in 1920; in jail he wrote a part of Trilce (1922). The book is somber and tragic in tone and dramatically experimental in form. In 1923 he went to Europe in self-imposed exile, espoused the Marxist cause, and aligned himself with the Republicans in the Spanish civil war. He also wrote Tungsteno (1931), a moving novel about native peoples. Vallejo made a meager living from journalism and died in poverty. Two volumes of his work were published posthumously
