CESAR VALLEJO: THE POET, THE MILITANT, THE COMMUNIST
"...As of Peruvian poetry, for me, Vallejo is extraordinary. Yes, he is ours, and besides, he was a Communist," "an absolute creator." Cesar Vallejo, the poet, the militant, the Communist, is being remembered by the proletariat and the people in the 106th anniversary of his birth. Today, that the Peruvian people led by the PCP are fighting 18 years of the glorious People's War, this greeting has greater significance. Vallejo, who knew how to sing and communicate with his poetry and activism with the people, workers, peasants, and students also struggled with his cells, "his no's," "his stills," his hungers, his pieces. He struggled so consciously that this artist is inevitably a political subject to whom neutrality and a lack of political sensibility are proof of spiritual shortness, human mediocrity, and aesthetical inferiority. Vallejo wrote: Against this kind of parasites, Vallejo rose his powerful voice and took a clear political position, which the present system's lackeys (reactionaries and revisionists) forget when they try to eschew their "homages to the death of Vallejo."

(Full name C©sar Abraham Vallejo) Peruvian poet, short story writer, essayist, playwright, journalist, and novelist.
    INTRODUCTION
Vallejo is considered one of the most important poets in modern Spanish American literature. Influenced by various political, intellectual, and aesthetic events and movements of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries—including communism, the Spanish civil war, Darwinism, and Spanish Modernism—his works are marked by inventive wordplay and stylistic experimentation. Thematically, Vallejo's poems are often concerned with social and political injustice, alienation, and the conflict between physical desire and spirituality.
    Biographical Information
The youngest of eleven children, Vallejo was born into a lower middle-class family in Santiago de Chuco, Peru. He attended Trujillo University, where he earned his B.A. in 1915 as well as a degree in law; during this time he also published his first works in local newspapers. Associated with Nuestra epoca

Always a step ahead of the literary currents, each of his books was distinct from the others and in its own sense revolutionary.
    Life
César Vallejo was born the youngest of eleven children in Santiago de Chuco, a remote village in the Andes of Peru. He studied literature in the Universidad de la Libertad in Trujillo, Peru. The poet dropped out of the university several times, working at a sugar plantations where he saw firsthand the exploitation of agrarian workers, a sight that would influence his politics and aesthetics. Vallejo received a masters degree in spanish literature in 1915.
Later, Vallejo moved to Lima, where he lived a Bohemian lifestyle, meeting important members of the intellectual left, and working as a tutor and then a professor. The poet suffered a number of calamities in the years leading up to the publication of Los Heraldos Negros: He lost his teaching post after having refusing to marry a woman with whom he had an affair, his lover died of a failed abortion which he had forced her to undergo, his mother died in 1920, and he was imprisoned for 105 days after returning home to Santiago de Chuco and igniting a scandal there.
After publishing Trilce in 1923, the poet, having lost another professorship in Lima, emigrated to Europe, where he lived until his death in Paris in 1938. He is interred in the Cimetière du Montparnasse.

By George Lambie. 22 February, 1995
I would like to know if any list subscribers are interested in the radical Peruvian poet Cesar Vallejo. I have written an article entitled 'Poetry and Politics: The Spanish Civil War Poetry of Cesar Vallejo' (Bulletin of Hispanic Studies, 1992) and a book, El Pensamiento Politico de Cesar Vallejo y la Guerra Civil Espanola (Milla Batres Editorial, Lima, Peru, 1993). The book contains a conclusion which examines the relevance of Vallejo's political ideas today. Both this conclusion and the above article are available from me on request. In my view Vallejo was perhaps the only Latin American poet of his generation to understand the complex politics of the interwar years, and certainly the only Hispanic poet to sucessfully incorporate Marxist ideas in his poetry. Vallejo's political formation was influenced principally by Mariategui, Gramsci, Marx, and for a while Max Eastman. Today Vallejo is regarded as Peru's greatest poet and one of the best in Hispanic literature. The debate over his ideas and poetry still goes on in Peru and Latin America, and continues to have political influence.

    Cesar Vallejo's Search for Transcendence
    by Sandy McKinney
Section I: Introduction f all the themes sought after in serious poetry, the theme of transcendence is probably the most universally pursued and the least frequently realized. If transcendence means a going beyond , then the movement that leads to the beyond must begin its trajectory by being solidly grounded in the only reality that three-dimensional beings can know objectively: the physical world in which our bodies move and touch as they provide us with the sense data which form the basis of our perceptions. This study will attempt to follow that trajectory as it was experienced and recorded by a 20th Century poet whose self-confessed wish was: . . . to knock on all the doors, and beg pardon of whoever's there and make for him bits of fresh bread here, in the oven of my heart. ("Our Daily Bread") At age 27, Cesar Vallejo published his first volume of poems, Los Heraldos Negros What he passed on to Vallejo was an almost fanatical concern for the mot juste , and a determination to pack his lines so densely with energy, vividness of motion and description, and the naked vernacular, that they threatened to explode out of the restraints imposed by their formal figures and their formal rhyme. Of the 67 poems which comprise

Publisher Comments: This first translation of the complete poetry of Peruvian Cesar Vallejo (1892-1938) makes available to English speakers one of the greatest achievements of twentieth-century world poetry. Handsomely presented in facing-page Spanish and English, this volume, translated by National Book Award winner Clayton Eshleman, includes the groundbreaking collections The Black Heralds (1918), Trilce (1922), Human Poems (1939), and Spain, Take This Cup from Me (1939). Vallejo's poetry takes the Spanish language to an unprecedented level of emotional rawness and stretches its grammatical possibilities. Striking against theology with the very rhetoric of the Christian faith, Vallejo's is a tragic visionperhaps the only one in the canon of Spanish-language literaturein which salvation and sin are one and the same. This edition includes notes on the translation and a fascinating translation memoir that traces Eshleman's long relationship with Vallejo's poetry. An introduction and chronology provide further insights into Vallejo's life and work.
