A man I'm proud to call my friend is a former abused child who transcended his childhood. He became a decorated war hero, an award-winning journalist, a brilliant storyteller and a gifted orator. He has never stopped serving his country. Recently, my friend asked me, "Is child abuse increasing or decreasing? Everything I read seems to have a different message. What's the truth?" I told my friend he was asking the wrong question. What he should be asking is, "Who cares?" The answer to those questions cannot be found in studies or statistics. The essence of a culture is in its performance, not its proclamations. In any major electoral race, the candidates are forced to take a position on every issue for which there is a constituency. This is a fact of American politics: One cannot run for national office without an unambiguous stance on abortion, gun control, the environment, capital punishment and many other issues of deep concern to clearly identifiable groups. And such groups cannot be placated with nebulous generalities. They demand the details: What legislation will be passed? What programs will be funded? Demand Real Answers Soon, the Presidential candidates will meet to debate. But we know from past experience that child protection will not be on the agenda. All we ask of the candidates is a declaration that they "love children" and "support the American family." The candidates tacitly agree to a mutual nonaggression pact, never challenging their opponent's

Rob Holden: Andrew Vachss, welcome to ReadersRoom.Com. It's a pleasure to have you with us here today!
Andrew Vachss: I appreciate the opportunity.
Rob Holden: I would like to start this off by talking about your latest novel Two Trains Running . Can you tell our readers a bit about it?
Andrew Vachss: A bit? Yeah, okay. Essentially, I take known historical facts, add historical facts which are undisputed but nowhere near as well known (or acknowledged) as they should be, and draw a slight "speculative bridge" to account for the (eventual) result of their confluence, and leave it to the reader to decide if I have sufficiently defended the proposition. This book was written without exposition no back story or catch-ups and without introspection no thought balloons so the only POV is the readers. Think of Two Trains as a series of surveillance opportunities for the reader (a lot of such opportunities, almost 500 pages cover but two continuous weeks), with the final judgment (even the ending) being the reader's individual decision.

REFERENCES COLUMNS Mystery General Fiction Interview This is not to say that 'Two Trains Running' is easy reading. Yes, each short section is goes down smoother than a two hundred dollar shot of scotch, but putting together the big picture requires reflection and serious attention. Vachss has a huge cast that he deploys with no exposition and no introspection, and a minimum of third-person omniscient tracking. Some readers may feel there's too much here to understand. Others will feel invigorated and excited. Vachss certainly has some intriguing and utterly memorable characters, all drawn in shades of gray. Royal Beaumont and his sister Cynthia live together in a manner that slips under the reader's radar. Walker Dett is a blisteringly intense man, and his transformative experience is superlatively shocking. But Vachss shows a more demure, stilted and almost tender side here. Dett and other characters find themselves engagingly, clumsily tongue-tied when confronted with women. Vachss keeps the romance angle sharply shaded and doesn't delve into the explicit. Some readers will balk at the complexity of Vachss' story. Precisely who some characters are and what parts they play are not clear even at the end of the novel. Every reader will walk away from this novel asking questions, perhaps vaguely annoyed because the answers aren't always apparent. Few writers have the combination of chutzpah and skill to write a novel that will leave his readers champing at the bit. Vachss has done so, and we can only hope a sequel is coming much sooner than is likely. 'Two Trains Running' is one of the few novels that leaves the reader asking questions and expects the reader to provide answers. Vachss has provided an amazing express train to get you to that state of mind. At the border of states, where the laws and lies run free. You can lie to the law. But it's a lot more difficult to lie to yourself.

"Blue Belle"
(Reviewed by Jana L. Perskie DEC 12, 2005) Andre Vachss' Blue Belle Blue Belle is one hard-hitting novel, reminiscent of crime fiction in the 1940s and 50s, though much more disturbing. Burke, as always, is our narrator. Everything and everyone comes under his cynical, seen-it-all scrutiny. I have never learned more about the underworld and the seamier side of life, the one most people rarely observe, than through the author's narrative. Burke's expert eyes take in details of life on the street that mine never would. His gritty urban world is one where "citizens" dwell side-by-side with "maggots." New developments occur in this novel which will have a long term effect on our protagonist. Burke has a lifetime history of living a loner's existence. Belle, "a big sweet-smelling girl with a snake tattoo on her thigh" meets our man to set up an initial appointment with Marques, the pimp. Burke and Belle act on a mutual attraction, which then begins to grow into a relationship. She is a voluptuous exotic dancer, a superb getaway-car driver, and she loves our man. Her past is dark. So what else is new?

Characters of Marginal Interest
THERE ARE TIMES when a series of books comes along peopled with characters of such self-important shallowness that a reader is left wondering, after wandering through a few of the titles in the sequence, not only why he bothered making the effort in the first place, but why the given collection of books sells so many copies, why it’s so successful. And that brings us to the juvenile efforts of Andrew Vachss and his Burke novels, the latest offering titled Down Here. According to the jacket copy, Vachss “With bone-crushing impact, set in a milieu that clogs your lungs and stings your eyes, Down Here is the penetrating and remarkable thriller from the master of American Noir.” Sounds promising considering this is from the “master of American noir.” I wonder what happened to James Ellroy? Did he stop writing? The family often meets at a Chinese restaurant that doesn’t serve food to anyone who enters looking for a meal. Potential customers in the dingy dining establishment are ignored until they eventually leave. Instead, Burke’s buddies sit around eating bowl after bowl of soup, a concoction that figures highly in Burke’s life but is never described (secret family recipe, I guess), discussing whatever stultifying case they’re on. The soup is made by some ancient crone known as Mama, who apparently is an oracle of sorts, if you believe Burke, though Mama has never offered a profundity in my reading experience. Rather, the reader is treated to fascinating vignettes that begin like this one where Burke and Wolfe attempt to piece together the case against dear Wolfe:

When the former shot-caller of the country's most feared white supremacist prison gang contacts Burke, he comes with references and the promise of a huge score. Terminally ill, the ex-con needs major cash to gamble on the long-shot possibility of a cure that's available only in Switzerland. The only card he has to play is a small-time degenerate who paid for protection when they were in prison together. That professional bottom-feeder claims he personally buried the body of a thirteen-year-old girl who had been raped, tortured, and finally killed by three rich men more than thirty years agoand that he's holding irrefutable proof. But such a complicated extortion scheme needs the hand of a specialist crew, so Burke is offered a piece of the action.

Two Trains Running
Andrew Vachss
Pantheon, 2005
Rating: 3.7 Posted: September 19, 2005 By Kevin Forest Moreau Two Trains Running isn't Andrew Vachss' first departure from his popular series of crime novels featuring the battle-scarred avenger Burke. But it is his most substantial departure at least on the surface. Focused on the goings-on in the fictional town of Locke City during a two-week period in 1959, Two Trains attempts to pinpoint the exact moment in time when history pivoted into the present. But while its milieu and setting are a definite change of pace, there's much to this ambitious mini-epic that will feel familiar to fans of Vachss' other fiction. To be sure, there's more than a little of the ultra-cautious, ever-meticulous Burke in the enigmatic Walker Dett, whose arrival in Locke City spurs the book into action. Dett may not be a child-abuse survivor on a mission to protect children, but he's as intense an anti-hero as Vachss has created and he is on a mission. He's a hit man hired by Locke City's homegrown crime boss, the wheelchair-bound Royal Beaumont, to protect his interests as various criminal forces (and the federal government) grow more interested in the city. As his oh-so-symbolic handle (a debt, walking) makes clear, however, he has his own agenda.
