Incurable Logophilia
A reading meme bookish bits and bobs
Jane Urquhart - The Underpainter
For the past year I have belonged to a book group here in Switzerland. This is by far the best book group I have ever had the luck to join. We’re an international group of women who meet once a month in one of the region’s wine caveaus – a beautiful smoky cellar filled with wine casks and gnarled old vines in a village that dates to Roman times. We do a tasting and talk literature for a few hours – it is an evening I look forward to all month and I am never disappointed. Last month we discussed Marilynne Robinson’s Gilead and this month David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas is on the schedule – I cannot wait. Sometime last year we read Jane Urquhart’s A Map of Glass which was my introduction to this Canadian writer. On the whole we were a divided group. Some of us loved the book and others a bit less. I was in the second camp. Something about the novel put me off. It is a beautifully written story and deals with emotional distance and artistic expression in an intriguing way – which might have been the problem. Like my more recent experience with Don Delillo’s Falling Man , when a character keeps his or her distance from me, I tend to respond a lot less as well. While reading it, I kept telling myself that I should love it but something held me back. However, Urquhart’s stunning and skillful writing told me that I had found an author I might like to try again.

... Article List Select year: Austin Clarke, Posie Graeme-Evans, Jane Urquhart, and more writers at the Brisbane Writers' Festival... Posie Graeme-Evans is the director of drama at the Nine Network, Australia, and her latest novel is called The Exhiled. The novel is about political intrigue, lust, and treachery surrounding the English throne in the 15th century. Ms Graeme-Evans said her favorite books were always about another place in another time. These included Leonard Woolley's Ur of the Chaldees: a Record of Seven Years of Excavation (1940), about a Mesopatamian dig. Also she liked myths and fairytales, particularly Norse myths. And she liked the Tuesday Lobsang Rampa books, including The Third Eye (Rampa's purportedly autobiographical tale of his study and mastery of Tibetan Buddhism). "I found out as an adult that "The Third Eye" was written by an Englishman but I loved it at the time," Ms Posie-Evans said. Geraldine Brooks wrote Nine Parts of Desire Foreign Correspondence , and Year of Wonders . Year of Wonders is historical fiction, set in the time of the plague in 17th century England, and the story concerns the carrying of the plague from London to a small Derbyshire village by an itinerant tailor.

In THE STONE CARVERS, author Jane Urquhart weaves a masterfully constructed tale of love and war, passion and loss, spanning generations and sweeping the reader from the wilds of 19th century Canada to the post World War I battlefields of Vimy, France, where a colossal monument is being raised to honor those Canadians who fought and died in one of the most decisive battles in the war. It is at this monument that a brother and sister, recently reunited after a nearly a lifetime of estrangement, will work side by side, hoping to put their troubled pasts behind them.
Klara Becker is a 38-year-old spinster, living alone on her family's small farm in the German-settled town of Shoneval in southwestern Ontario, Canada. Over the years, Klara has come to accept and even savor the life of spinsterhood, filling up her days with tailoring, caring for her small herd of beloved snow-white cattle, and researching and recording the colorful history of Shoneval. But Klara has two things most spinsters do not - independence and a past. Independence because she has no family to speak of - no sick aunts to care for, no nieces or nephews to look after - and very deep within her heart, she holds faint memories of romance. Memories of a young man she loved and lost to the war - their brief affair lasting only a season but leaving a permanent impression on Klara that will guide her future in ways she could never imagine.

A Map of Glass by Jane Urquhart
A Map of Glass begins with the lonely death of Andrew Woodman in the forest on Timber Island in the mouth of the St. Lawrence River. His body is found by Jerome McNaughton, a young artist spending the winter on the island. A year later in Toronto, Jerome is visited by Sylvia, who claims to have been Andrew's lover. Her tales of Andrew's life and that of his ancestors who had built a timber empire on the shores of Lake Ontario spur Jerome to search for the past, not just for his artistic pursuits, but to understand his own life. Jane Urquhart's novel is a grand saga of man versus nature, and versus himself, and the power of life, love, art, and death. A Map of Glass has received mostly positive reviews with the London Free Press saying, "Still, as with The Stone Carvers The Underpainter Away and other Urquhart fiction, the author succeeds in spinning a sellable story. She is a skillful, if mannered novelist, whose close, admiring relationship with the history and landscapes of eastern Ontario remains impressive."
