Framed and Booked
We all become different readers in how we respond to books, why we need them, what we take from them. We become different in the questions that arise as we read, in the answers that we find, in the degree of satisfaction or unease we feel with those answers. . . In the hands of a different reader, the same story can be a different story. "The Opposite of Fate" by Amy Tan

1970's By the Decades Challenge
TRINITY by Leon Uris Tis a grand tale, it is, this story of the downtrodden of Ireland and the first risings of the Irish Republican Army. But mostly, it is the story of Conor Larkin. In a post of my "Life's a Picture" blog, I described him thusly: "Conor Larkin is one of the most romantic male characters I've ever read. I think I fell in love with him when I read this in my early 20's." I love this passage where he declares his love to Shelley: "Did I ever tell you how glad I am to have made your acquaintance, lady? I've walked through the crowds of crowds all my life. I've seen the faces of the women in the church and heard the listless priests intone. I've seen the men come down from the fields and be felled to their knees at the angelus. I've seen the hard cities. And all the time I looked past sterile eyes into sterile hearts. Then one time I looked and it ws different than all the other times and I told myself I'd have to be the worst kind of fool to recognize something had happened and not do something about it. "

Friday June 27, 2003 Leon Uris dies created 'mythic Israel' for generations PETER EPHROSS
Jewish Telegraphic Agency NEW YORK Leon Uris wasn't a critic's darling. But for millions of readers, he was an entree into modern Jewish history. Uris' books "appeal to people who want a good read," said Bonnie Lyons, a professor of English at the University of Texas-San Antonio. Through Uris' works which included "Exodus," a 600-page novel on the Jewish struggle to establish the state of Israel after World War II, and "Mila 18," a chronicle of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising people could develop a sympathy for Israel and Jewish history, said Lyons, who has written widely on American Jewish literature. Uris died Saturday in New York at 78 of renal failure. He was known for writing books that were long and obsessively researched and, once they landed on the bookshelves, were obsessively read. None of the criticism matters "as you are swept along in the narrative," Pete Hamill once wrote in The New York Times. Uris' parents were emigres from the Russian Empire. His father had spent a year in pre-state Israel before moving to the United States, and derived his surname, Uris, from Yerushalmi, meaning Jerusalemite, according to The New York Times.

Book Review:
The Haj by Leon Uris Posted in Politics Reviews Foreign Policy Books at 2:54 pm by Ryan Last week I finished reading a book called The Haj pilgrimage to Mecca directly, but rather to an individual, a leader of a Palestinian village who has made the pilgrimage and has prefixed his name with the word to reflect this, becoming Haj Ilbrahim. It is a novel that follows this individual and his family through the time from around 1920 to around 1955, as the Middle East erupted with the establishment of Israel. Before I go further, I would like to say that I am going to discuss the book from two angles that I see as being orthogonal: the book as literature and entertainment as one aspect, and the book as a reflection of Arab character as a different and separate aspect. The ending is my only complaint, so All the character construction that had gone on throughout the book just sort of disintegrated at the end. I realize that Uris was trying to create a grand tragedy, ala Hamlet Leon Uris is not Arab.
