Chase Twichell
August 1998 Chase Twichell was born in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1950, first child of a troubled marriage that would last another forty years before it came apart in divorce. Her father taught Latin at Choate, a boy's prep school, where he also coached baseball and worked in the administration. Her mother raised the three daughters, then took a job in a book store, where she worked for many years. In the summers and during vacations, the family lived in Keene Valley, New York, in the Adirondacks just south of Montreal, where her father's family had gone for many generations. This early intimacy with wilderness has probably been the single greatest influence on Twichell's life and work. Twichell attended elementary school in New Haven, then at 14 was sent to St. Timothy's, a small girl's boarding school in Maryland, for four years. It was a brutal place, with little humor and no idle time. First bell rang at 6:45, and every minute was accounted for between then and lights out (no talking) at 9:30 or, for the older girls, a little later. Punishments for breaking the countless rules were bizarre: talking after lights out: two extra hours of study hall before breakfast. Smoking, chewing gum, or leaving the remote campus without permission: expulsion. Not wearing a slip: the offender's skirt was lifted in front of the whole school as the slip-checkers moved down the line. Twichell, who suffered from attention deficit disorder, did poorly at St. Timothy's, finishing in the bottom fifth of her class. But by the time she left, she had committed herself to the secret life of poetry.

She lives in New York today, and has taught at Princeton University . She is the winner of several awards in writing from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts , the American Academy of Arts and Letters and The Artists Foundation . Additionally she has received fellowships from both the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts Many of Chase's poems are heavily influenced by her years as a Zen Buddhist student of John Daido Loori at Zen Mountain Monastery , and her poetry in the book The Snow Watcher shows it. In the Fall Tricycle magazine interview with Chase, she says, "Zazen and poetry are both studies of the mind. I find the internal pressure exerted by emotion and by a koan to be similar in surprising and unpredictable ways. Zen is a wonderful sieve through which to pour a poem. It strains out whatever's inessential."

Vividly realized, emotionally gripping, these poems of Chase Twichell's confront the crucial issue of our times: the death of nature as we have known it. The Adirondacks, with their beauties and dangers, are the setting for many of the poems. They are inhabited by the fox, the bear, the fishercat. One is rabid, another dead, the third a life-sustaining dream. The "ghost" is both the shadow of the paradise we have so carelessly ruined, and the poet herself, from whom the elegy for it is wrenched. These are dark poems, frontal and unflinching, but they are illuminated by the poet's powerful love for the earth, and by the heightened, surprising joys forced from a new intimacy with her own mortality. showPanel(document.getElementById('lnk_Summary'), 'Summary');

    This is a daily immersion in listening, reflection, and conversation about the pleasures and challenges of poetic work.
    The Fellows are in residence throughout the week, with a different Guest Faculty poet present each day for a morning lecture, afternoon workshop, and evening reading.
    Participants rotate through workshops conducted by the Fellows and may express preferences for which Guest Faculty workshop they would like to attend.
    There will be time during the week for the composition of new work, and indeed at two of their daily workshops participants are asked to present a completely new poem and a new revision. 2008 Guest Poets for the Festival, each present for one day to deliver a morning craft talk, lead an afternoon workshop, and give an evening reading:

    There are two speakers in the poems, both women: Radha, a newly-seduced fourteen year old cow-herding girl (who speaks in italics) and Bhanu, her older confidante and advisor in the ways of the world. The seducer is Krishna, come to earth disguised as a handsome cowherd. On one level the poems are the story of an adolescent love affair, but they're also an allegory of the soul's relation to God. Most of the unfamiliar names, (Kan, Khanu, Syama, etc.) are other names of Krishna.

    INTERVIEWS WORLD MEDIA WATCH P.M. CARPENTER MAUREEN FARRELL ... FAQ A Poet Against the War, Chase Twichell A BUZZFLASH INTERVIEW
    by Dwayne Eutsey "Poetry's not window cleaning. It breaks the glass." Chase Twichell According to First Lady Laura Bush, "There is nothing political about American literature. Everyone can like American literature, no matter what your party." Besides being an odd thing for a former teacher and librarian to say (she's never seen the embarrassing list of books banned in this country for political reasons?), Bush's statement also expresses an assumption among the self-satisfied elites in this country (represented by her husband) that believe "good literature" really means "well-behaved literature." According to this attitude, "good" literary works, and the "good" writers who create them, are above the unwashed world of politics (especially those espoused by the Left). A trait of good American literature, liked as it is by everyone, after all, is that it should not offend the reader, especially those who sip wine and indulge in polite discussion at literary receptions hosted by people like Laura Bush.
