T HE MARK TWAIN CIRCLE OF NEW YORK was formed in 1999 as a successor to the long-established Mark Twain Association of New York, which was founded in 1926 and survived until age and infirmity overtook it in 1998. After a very well-attended and enthusiastic launch meeting, all of the group’s officers became so distracted with Y2K preparedness and other weighty matters that the nascent Circle was pretty much left to fend for itself, alas. It is the sponsors’ earnest hope that this program will help spark a revival of interest. They believe New York is too great a city, with too many Twain-related landmarks and connections, not to have an active Mark Twain interest group.

Source: The Library of Congress Mark Twain - Notebook #18, Feb. - Sept. 1879 "All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn. if you read it you must stop where the Nigger Jim is stolen from the boys. That is the real end. The rest is just cheating. But it's the best book we've had. All American writing comes from that. There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since." Ernest Hemingway, Green Hills of Africa, One of the great writers of American literature, Twain is admired for capturing typical American experiences in a language which is realistic and charming. Howells was one of Twain's early admirers, and he wrote the following on Twain's style: "So far as I know, Mr. Clemens is the first writer to use in extended writing the fashion we all use in thinking, and to set down the thing that comes into his mind without fear or favor of the thing that went before or the thing that may be about to follow." Most of the critical attention has been given to Huck Finn , Clemens' greatest achievement. This book concerns itself with a number of themes, among them the quest for freedom, the transition from adolescence into adulthood, alienation and initiation, criticism of pre-Civil War southern life. A remarkable achievement of the book is Clemens' use of American humor, folklore, slang, and dialects. There is critical debate, however, concerning the ending of the book - some call it weak and ineffective, others feel it is appropriate and effective.

American Author and Humorist
The man with a new idea is a crank until the idea succeeds. Samuel Langhorne Clemens (pen name Mark Twain ) was born on November 30, 1835 in Florida, Missouri. Twain is considered the greatest humorist of 19th Century American literature. His novels and stories about the Mississippi River: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1894) are still popular with modern readers.
In 1839 the Clemens family moved to Hannibal, Missouri, on the Mississippi River where young Sam experienced the excitement and colorful sights of the waterfront. Like many authors of his day he had little formal education. His education came from the print shops and newspaper offices where he worked as a youth. In 1853 Clemens left Hannibal with a yearning to travel. On a trip to New Orleans he persuaded a riverboat pilot to teach him his skill. By the Spring of 1859 Clemens was a licensed riverboat pilot.
At the outbreak of the American Civil War (1861) Clemens chose not to get involved and moved to Carson City, Nevada. After an unsuccessful attempt at gold and silver mining he joined the staff of a newspaper in Virginia City, Nevada. He first wrote under the pen name, "Mark Twain" (meaning "two fathoms" in riverboat-talk) in 1863. "Twain" wrote his first popular story, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County in 1865.

Ever The Twain Shall Meet
Mark Twain on the Web
It's not really all that rare for a person to have insights on what makes this species tick and have those insights stand up to the harsh tests of history. What is rare, in my mind, is for those insights to remain vital, relevant, and funny a century later. I won't bore you with why I think this is. I'm not sure I could, anyway. There are scholars, far better equipped than I, to make this case, and I will leave that to them. My interest is to see Twain's writings available to the Web and to let you judge for yourself.

Donated letter defines Twain's tie to newspaper

A piece of history was donated to the Mark Twain Museum, Saturday, Nov. 3, when the descendants of W.H. Powell, editor of the Hannibal Courier-Post in 1907, presented a letter written by Mark Twain to the newspaper in that same year. "The Mark Twain Museum is proud to announce that it has received a Mark Twain letter with Hannibal connections," said Henry Sweets, museum curator. "The letter stayed with the Powell family through the years and was presented by Powell's granddaughter, Nancy Saxhaug, Grand Rapids, Minn., and her daughter, Susie Loeffler." Full Story

The Singular Mark Twain

Two people dominated the early years of Samuel Clemens, one a warm presence, the other a cold absence. His mother, Jane Lampton Clemens, bore her burdens with cheerful lightheartedness and energetic imagination. She loved Fourth of July parades as much as she enjoyed funeral processions. Apparently she had a sense of fun but, according to her son, no sense of humor at all. She had a mincing, sharp tongue. She was incapable of recognizing wit or irony. His father, John Marshall Clemens, bore his burdens in melancholy and silence; he said very little to any of his children, and what he said reinforced his austere manner. He was not in favor of mischief, even childish mischief.

Mark Twain (1835-1910) - pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens American writer, journalist, and humorist, who won a worldwide audience for his stories of youthful adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Sensitive to the sound of language, Twain introduced colloquial speech into American fiction. In Green Hills of Africa , Ernest Hemingway wrote: " All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn ..." "When I was a boy, there was but one permanent ambition among my comrades in our village on the west bank of the Mississippi River. That was, to be a steamboatman." (from 'Old Times on the Mississippi', 1875) Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain) was born in Florida, Missouri, of a Virginian family. The family soon moved to Hannibal, Missouri, where Twain was brought up. At school, accroding to his own words, he "excelled only in spelling". After his father's death in 1847, Twain was apprenticed to a printer. Her also started his career as a journalist by writing for the Hannibal Journal . Later Twain worked as a licensed Mississippi river-boat pilot (1857-61). His famous penname Twain adopted from the call ('Mark twain!' - meaning by the mark of two fathoms) used when sounding river shallows. But this isn't the full story: he had also satirized an older writer, Isaiah Sellers, who called himself Mark Twain. In 1861 Twain served briefly as a confederate irregular. The Civil War put an end to the steamboat traffic, and during a period when Twain was out of work, he lived in a primitive cabin on Jackass Hill and tried his luck as a gold-miner. "I would have been more or less than human if I had not gone mad like the rest," he confessed.

A little learning makes the whole world kin.
Proverbs xxxii, 7. I went often to look at the collection of curiosities in Heidelberg Castle, and one day I surprised the keeper of it with my German. I spoke entirely in that language. He was greatly interested; and after I had talked a while he said my German was very rare, possibly a "unique"; and wanted to add it to his museum. If he had known what it had cost me to acquire my art, he would also have known that it would break any collector to buy it. Harris and I had been hard at work on our German during several weeks at that time, and although we had made good progress, it had been accomplished under great difficulty and annoyance, for three of our teachers had died in the mean time. A person who has not studied German can form no idea of what a perplexing language it is.
