By Harry Turtledove A Tale of the morning of human history. "Now Turtledove turns his hand to a major fantasy creation, a world at the sun-drenched beginning of human history. Young Sharur is the scion of a merchant family in the city of Gibil, loyal - he thinks - to his citys god, Engibil, and to that gods human deputies. But like his fellows in Gibil, Sharur is less interested in gods than in progress in invention and trade. Then, on a routine trading expedition he learns that the gods of the other cities, resentful of Engibils relaxed attitude toward his people, are uniting to punish Gibil and squelch the growing power of human creativity, epitomized by the city-states easygoing ways. Now only Sharurs wits can save the city from the aroused divinities . And hes going to need all the inventiveness he can muster. Magical, outrageous, and yet lucidly sane, Between The River s is a terrific entertainment, a tale of the power of human rationality that will leave readers crying out for more."

Harry Turtledove : In Jeremy Bloom's Toastmaster interview with Harry Turtledove , Turtledove says: "It's funny. I've done Roman stuff and Greek stuff; I've studied Christian theology, as part of that historical context, much better than I've studied my own." After this, in brackets, are the words: [Jewish, although not particularly active]. Turtledove works with significant Jewish themes, history and characters include: The Case of the Toxic Spell Dump ; "In the Presence of Mine Enemies"; "In This Season"; "The R-Strain"; Colonization: Second Contact ; WorldWar series (In the Balance; Striking the Balance; Tilting the Balance; Upsetting the Balance). [Source: Chaim Mazo. "Jewish Science Fiction" web site.] Turtledove, who earned a Ph.D. in Byzantine History, is the author of the "Agent of Byzantium" alternate history series. In this reality, Mohammed did not found Islam, but became a Christian, and the greatest missionary since Paul. Thus, the Byzantine Empire did not lose Syria and Egypt in the 7th century and is far more powerful in the late middle ages. Until Card's 1999 novel Enchantment , Turtledove's series was the only major SF writing featuring Eastern Orthodox themes and settings.

September Books 13) The Year's Best Science Fiction: Twenty-Third Annual Collection

The Year's Best Science Fiction: Twenty-Third Annual Collection , ed. Gardner Dozois
This is always the best value for money of the various best-sf-of-the-year collections, if also the most intimidating (I don't seem to have finished last year's). Plenty of stories that I had already read and enjoyed, and several that were new to me - note especially "The Canadian Who Came Almost All the Way Back from the Stars" by Jay Lake and Ruth Nestvold, "The Blemmye's Stratagem" by Bruce Sterling, "Audubon in Atlantis" by Harry Turtledove, "Softly Spoke the Gabbleduck" by Neal Asher, "Planet of the Amazon Women" by David Moles and "Gold Mountain" by Chris Roberson. Better than at least half the stories on the Hugo and Nebula nomination lists. Perhaps we should let the professional anthologists decide the awards, rather than the voters?

In it Theophanes paints a vivid picture of the Empire's struggle in the seventh and eighth centuries both to withstand foreign invasions and to quell internal religious conflicts. Theophanes's carefully developed chronological scheme was mined extensively by later Byzantine and Western record keepers; his chronicle was used as a source of information as well as a stylistic model. It is the framework upon which all Byzantine chronology for this period must be based. Important topics covered by the Chronicle include:
  • The Empire's struggle to repel explosive Arab expansionism and the Bulgar invasion.
  • The iconoclastic controversy, which caused civil war within Byzantium and led to schism between the churches of Constantinople and Rome.

Settling Accounts: In at the Death by Harry Turtledove
The Epic Alternate History Series Comes to an End - Maybe
Settling Accounts: In at the Death is the eleventh and it is said the last of the long running Southern Victory Series by master of alternate history Harry Turtledove. But since In at the Death sets up so many possibilities for future stories, one should not bet any money on it being the last.
For those who have not read the series, the premise of the Southern Victory series is that the Confederacy won the War of Secession in the 1860s. The series began with a prequel novel, How Few Remain , which depicted a conflict between the United States and the Confederate States in the 1880s over the latter country's annexation of a number of Mexican states. There followed three books collectively entitled The Great War which depicted an American front of a far more savage World War I in which the United States was an ally of Germany and the Confederacy an ally of Britain, France, and Russia. Three books collectively entitled American Empire were next, telling what happened in the 1920s and 1930s, mainly depicting this world's version of the Great Depression and the rise of a fascist state in the Confederacy.
