Bio
Harry Norman Turtledove was born in Los Angeles, CA on 14 June 1949. After failing out of electrical engineering at Caltech, he attended UCLA, where he received a Ph.D. in Byzantine history in 1977. His dissertation was on The Immediate Successors of Justinian: A Study of the Persian Problem and of Continuity and Change in Internal Secular Affairs in the Later Roman Empire During the Reigns of Justin II and Tiberius II Constantine (A.D. 565-582). In 1979, Turtledove published his first two novels, Wereblood and Werenight , under the pseudonym "Eric G. Iverson"
. Turtledove later explained that his editor at Belmont Towers did not think people would believe the author's real name was "Turtledove" and suggested that he come up with something more Nordic. He continued to use the "Iverson" name until 1985 when he published his "Herbig-Haro" and "And So to Bed" under his real name. In the 1980's, Turtledove worked as a technical writer for the Los Angeles Office of Education. In 1991, he left the LAOE and turned to writing full time. From 1986-1987, he served as the Treasurer for the Science Fiction Writers of America. Agent of Byzantium
Harry Turtledove
A book review by Danny Yee What if Justinian had succeeded in rebuilding the Roman Empire and Mohammed had been a Christian archbishop and saint? In the alternative 13th century world of Agent of Byzantium a powerful Byzantine empire faces a Franco-Saxon kingdom in the west, Persia in the east and nomads on the steppes. In a series of six short stories the hero, Basil Argyros, soldier and secret agent, confounds the enemies of the empire, in the process discovering smallpox innoculation and ferreting out the secrets of the telescope, gunpowder, distillation and the printing press. This is a bit implausible really, but the emphasis on technological discoveries is probably due to the intended audience (the stories were originally published in hard science fiction magazines) and it makes for a good story. Agent of Byzantium is hardly very deep, but it's a lot of fun as simple adventure even if you don't enjoy the alternative history. 14 August 1994

Question Will there be another series that will continue the "colonization" series, aftershocks left so much unanswered. From the Mini-Message Board Mike:
After blasting my way through "Aftershocks", I realized that by the end of the novel, there wasn't quite the "winding down" or sense of ending for the series as there was at the end of the Worldwar series. although there are some answers, I get the feeling that there is much still left up in the air. I realize that it wasn't quite the "hot" war that existed in the first series, but could this mean that you've decided to continue writing about this world, or does the ending reflect the ambiguity of this world and the Race's acceptance of such?

Surpassingly tall and gangly, with a high balding pate and bushy beard, you might mistake him for a sci-fi Byzantine monk. Which is somewhat appropriate, in that he holds a doctorate in Byzantine history. We spoke to him in his tastefully cluttered living room of his small house in Canoga Park, in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles. Actually, the house would be a fairly good size if it was just him and all the books, but when you add in his wife (mystery writer Laura Frankos) and daughters Allison, Rachel, and Rebecca, it makes for crowding. "Ruled Britannia"
(Reviewed by Mary Whipple JAN 29, 2003) "Thus the whirligig of time brings in his revenges." Groaning under Spanish rule for ten years, ever since England failed to defeat the Spanish Armada in 1588, the London citizens in this alternative history must endure the Inquisition, the imprisonment of their unfortunate Queen Elizabeth in the Tower of London, the threats of Irish barbarians hired as thugs and enforcers by the Spanish occupiers, and the country's constant sense of uncertainty, born of religious and political turmoil. The pageantry and spectacle of an auto-da-fe, both awe-inspiring and terrifying, open this novel, its horrors made real by the cry of a condemned man, begging for aid from an acquaintance in the mob, William Shakespeare, who can do nothing to help, and whose own life is endangered by the man's pitiful appeals.

Opening Atlantis, by Harry Turtledove
By Moe Lane on December 5, 2007 7:31 PM Permalink Comments (0) Amazon.com Widgets Opening Atlantis is Harry Turtledove's latest work of alternate history; the book jacket promises that this is the first book in a trilogy, and the author has already written at least two independent stories in the same universe, so we can expect a somewhat detailed exploration of this particular terrain. For those unfamiliar with the genre, "alternate history" is a type of either science fiction or fantasy where historical events turned out differently. The most common (if not stereotypical) examples are works where Nazi Germany won World War II, or the Confederacy won the American Civil War, but the need for novelty has encouraged authors to branch out to all sorts of plausible, implausible, and frankly impossible scenarios*.
Harry Turtledove is widely regarded to be one of the best, if not the best, in this field; he has explored most of the popular themes in this genre and has probably created a few of his own. In the Atlantis series he has chosen as his divergence point either the independent formation of a small continent in the mid-Atlantic, or the breakup of the existing North American tectonic plate to create one (the cover suggests the latter). The first English explorers of the island - the first discoverers being Basque fishermen in the mid-15th century who had traded the knowledge of its existence - called it "Atlantis," and immediately began independently settling there, as did French and Spanish fishermen. The general narrative traces the fortunes of several members of the Radcliffe family, who are descendants of the head of the original English settler, over the next three centuries, in three separate vignettes.

Book reviewed June 2006
Rating: 7/10 (Recommended)
Review by Aaron Hughes In April 1864, Confederate troops attacked Fort Pillow, Tennessee, defended by a Union garrison of both white and black soldiers. The Rebel commander General Nathan Bedford Forrest gave the Federals one chance to surrender, which they declined. When the Rebels later overran the fort, they slaughtered many Union troops who were wounded or had yielded, particularly the black soldiers, few of whom survived. The battle carried little strategic significance, yet played an important role in the Civil War, because outrage at the Fort Pillow Massacre helped harden the North's resolve to see the costly War through to victory. Fort Pillow by Harry Turtledove tells the story of the Fort Pillow Massacre from the point of view of the combatants on both sides, including several actual historical figures. Harry Turtledove has often written alternate histories of the Civil War, but Fort Pillow is his first Civil War novel to adhere strictly to the historical record (although he has published historical fiction set in ancient times under the pseudonym H.N. Turteltaub).

Turtledove, Harry. Days of infamy. New York: Penguin Roc, 2005. 520pp.
A pretty typical Turtledove alternate history novel, nothing more, nothing less. Interesting premise, large cast of viewpoint characters on both sides, lots of plot threads to make room for a bunch of sequels, a fair amount of padding in the text itself in the form of endless repetitions. And most of all, not much plot for a lot of pages.
This one is set in the Pacific theatre of WWII, with Japan invading and occupying Pearl Harbor in December 1941 instead of just mounting a surprise attack. The occupation that Turtledove presents seems suitably brutal, mostly in sync with what we know about the Japanese military during the war. Since Turtledove always has some characters conflicted by their situation in his alternate histories, this one is no different. This time it's the substantial population of Hawaiian Japanese, with the older generations tending to favour their homeland and younger siding with the USA. Of course, the Yankee characters are generally fairly arrogant and self-assured about their innate superiority and it's nice to see them taken down a peg by the superiority of the Japanese forces, leading me to at times root for the Japanese (if only temporarily, the occupation is truly brutal). I imagine that we'll see the American forces get the upper hand in later volumes.
