Copies of these applications may be obtained from The Tennessee State Library and Archives. Tennessee passed a law in 1891 that set up a Board of Pension Examiners. This board decided if the applicant was incapable of "making a support" and if his service was honorable. Confederate pensions were granted to former soldiers that resided in Tennessee rather than the state from which they served. Therefore, there are many soldiers who served from other states.
