Ivan Turgenev (1818-1883)
By Henry James
There is perhaps no novelist of alien race who more naturally than Ivan Turgenev inherits a niche in a Library for English readers; and this not because of any advance or concession that in his peculiar artistic independence he ever made, or could dream of making, such readers, but because it was one of the effects of his peculiar genius to give him, even in his lifetime, a special place in the regard of foreign publics. His position is in this respect singular; for it is his Russian savor that as much as anything has helped generally to domesticate him. a particular hour: with the difference, however, of not having at the time produced an agitationof having rather presented the case with an art too insidious for instant recognition, an art that stirred the depths more than the surface. War and Peace and of Anna Karenina War and Peace has probably had more readers in Europe and America than A House of Gentlefolk or On the Eve or Smoke One by one, for thirty years, with a firm, deliberate hand, with intervals and patiences and waits, Turgenev pricked in his sharp outlines. His great external mark is probably his concision: an ideal he never threw overit shines most perhaps even when he is least briefand that he often applied with a rare felicity. He has masterpieces of a few pages; his perfect things are sometimes his least prolonged. He abounds in short tales, episodes clipped as by the scissors of Atropos; but for a direct translation of the whole we have still to waitdepending meanwhile upon the French and German versions, which have been, instead of the original text (thanks to the paucity among us of readers of Russian), the source of several published in English. For the novels and

First Love I would sit and gaze and listen, and would be filled with a nameless sensation which had everything in it: sorrow and joy, a premonition of the future, and desire, and fear of life.  At the time, I understood none of this, and could not have given a name to any of the feelings which seethed within me; or else I would have called it all by one name - the name of Zinaida. why they call them classics. IVAN TURGENEV AN INTERNATIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHY
In 1985 the University of Calgary Press published my Turgenev. A Bibliography of Books 1843 - 1982 By and About Ivan Turgenev. With a Check-List of Canadian Library Holdings . This, surprisingly the first international bibliography of Turgenev, was confined to monographs. The task to try and compile a complete bibliography was simply too great at that time, but the need for a more comprehensive bibliography was clear. Accordingly, I began to maintain a computer file of Turgenev materials from the centennial year 1983 with the idea of publishing this bibliography, perhaps at regular intervals. In the intervening decade, technological advances have been such that it now appears much more useful to produce such a bibliography electronically, available from anywhere in the world on the World Wide Web, with the capacity for continuous updates and corrections. This is, then, the project upon which I now embark. This bibliography is sub-divided into individual years in order to keep individual files to a manageable size. Material is presented, as much as possible, in original language and scripts, using the "Unicode" encoding. If you can read the "Unicode" Russian on this page, your web browser automatically detects the "Unicode" encoding. It is possible that your browser requires to be set manually to "Unicode" encoding. Some older browsers cannot read "Unicode" encoding at all. If you can read the "Windows" Russian on this page, you should try and download the Word7 versions into a Word word processor.

Executive summary: Fathers and Sons Russian novelist, the descendant of an old Russian family, was born at Orel, in the government of the same name, in 1818. His father, the colonel of a cavalry regiment, died when our author was sixteen years of age, leaving two sons, Nicholas and Ivan, who were brought up under the care of their mother, the heiress of the Litvinovs, a lady who owned large estates and many serfs. Ivan studied for a year at the university of Moscow, then at St. Petersburg, and was finally sent in 1843 to Berlin. His education at home had been conducted by German and French tutors, and was altogether foreign, his mother only speaking Russian to her servants, as became a great lady of the old school. For his first acquaintance with the literature of his country the future novelist was indebted to a serf of the family, who used to read to him verses from the Rossiad of Kheraskov, a once celebrated poet of the eighteenth century. Turgenev's early attempts in literature, consisting of poems and trifling sketches, may be passed over here; they were not without indications of genius, and were favorably spoken of by Bielinski, then the leading Russian critic, for whom Turgenev ever cherished a warm regard. Our author first made a name by his striking sketches "The Papers of a Sportsman" (

We were a party of six, gathered together one winter evening at the house of an old college friend. The conversation turned on Shakespeare, on his types, and how profoundly and truly they were taken from the very heart of humanity. We admired particularly their truth to life, their actuality. Each of us spoke of the Hamlets, the Othellos, the Falstaffs, even the Richard the Thirds and Macbethsthe two last only potentially, it is true, resembling their prototypeswhom he had happened to come across.

At first the French kept us amused with sorties, but they quickly subsided. We soon got sick of foraging expeditions too; we were overcome, in fact, by such deadly dulness that we were ready to howl for sheer ennui. I was not more than nineteen then; I was a healthy young fellow, fresh as a daisy, thought of nothing but getting all the fun I could out of the French . . . and in other ways too . . . you understand what I mean . . . and this is what happened.
The Diary of a Superfluous Man
At last I have got at something definite! For all his cunning, he had to speak out at last. Yes, I am soon, very soon, to die. The frozen rivers will break up, and with the last snow I shall, most likely, swim away . . . whither? God knows! To the ocean too. Well, well, since one must die, one may as well die in the spring.

The life and works of Russian writer, novelist and playwright Ivan Turgenev, known for his sympathy towards peasants.
Ivan Turgenev, Russian author, short-story writer, novelist and playwright, wrote about the ordinary lives of his countrymen, the peasants in particular, and the conflicts in Russian society during the 19th century. He was famous for his novel Fathers and Sons.
    Early Life: Education and Career
Ivan (Sergeevich) Turgenev (1818-1883) was born in the province of Orel, into a wealthy family in the Ukraine region of Russia. He had an unhappy childhood due to the cruelty of his petty tyrant mother. He attended universities in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and in Berlin to study philosophy. While studying, he met and hung around with the radical political thinkers of the time. In particular, he became good friends with Alexander Herzen. Returning back to St. Petersburg in 1841, Turgenev worked for the Russian civil service for a short time before the success of two of his story-poems encouraged him to become a full-time writer. He took up literature which displeased his mother.
