His father Sergei Nikolaevich Turgenev, a colonel in the Imperial Russian cavalry, was a chronic philanderer making Ivan's mother, a not overly comely wealthy heiress that had had an unhappy childhood, miserable and bitter. Ivan's father died when Ivan was sixteen, leaving Turgenev and his brother Nicholas to be brought up by their abusive mother, Varvara Petrovna Lutovinova. After the standard schooling for a child of a gentleman's family, Turgenev studied for one year at the University of Moscow and then moved to the University of St Petersburg , focusing on Classics Russian literature and philology . He was sent in 1838 to the University of Berlin to study philosophy (particularly Hegel ) and history . Turgenev was impressed with German central-European society, and returned home a

Ivan Turgenev (1818-1883) Novelist, poet, and playwright, known for his detailed descriptions about the everyday live in Russia in the 19th century. Turgenev portrayed realistically the peasantry and the rising intelligentsia in its attempt to move the country into a new age. Although Turgenev has been overshadowed by his contemporaries Fyodor Dostoevsky and Leo Tolstoy , he remains one of the major figures of the 19th-century Russian literature. "A nihilist is a man who does not bow to any authorities, who does not take any principle on trust, no matter with what respect that principle is surrounded." (from Fathers and Sons Ivan Turgenev was born in Oryol, in the Ukraine region of Russia, into a wealthy family. His childhood was lonely. Especially he was afraid of his strict mother, who beat him constantly . Turgenev studied at St. Petersburg (1834-37), Berlin Universities (1838-41), and completed his master's exam in St Petersburg. At the age of 19 Turgenev, traveled to Germany. He was on a steamer when it caught fire and rumors spread in Russia that he had acted cowardly. This revealing experience, which followed the author throughout his life, formed later the basis for his story A Fire at Sea In 1841 Turgenev started his career at the Russian civil service. For a short time, he worked for the Ministry of Interior (1843-45). After the success of two of his story-poems, Turgenev devoted himself to literature, country pursuits, and travel. The rest of his life, he had a relationship with the opera singer Pauline Garcia Viardot, living near her or at times with her and her husband. In 1845-46 and 1847-50 Turgenev travelled to France with them. Viardot remained Turgenev's great and unfulfilled love; in his youth he had had one or two affairs with servant-girls, and produced an illegitimate daughter, Paulinette.

Main
born October 28 [November 9, New Style], 1818, Oryol, Russia died August 22 [September 3], 1883, Bougival, near Paris, France Russian novelist, poet, and playwright, whose major works include the short-story collection (1852) and the novels Rudin Home of the Gentry On the Eve (1860), and Fathers and Sons (1862). These works offer realistic, affectionate portrayals of the Russian peasantry and penetrating studies of the Russian intelligentsia who were attempting to move the country into a new age. Turgenev poured into his writings not only a deep concern for the future of his native land but also an integrity of craft that has ensured his place in Russian literature. The many years that he spent in western Europe were due in part to his personal and artistic stand as a liberal between the reactionary tsarist rule and the spirit of revolutionary radicalism that held sway in contemporary artistic and intellectual circles in Russia. Ivan S. Turgenev (1818-1883) , Russian poet, playwright and author wrote Fathers and Sons (1862). Its central character Bazarov and his friend Arkady represent the nihilistic tendencies of the younger generation given to western free-thinking and revolt; "A nihilist is a man who does not bow to any authorities, who does not take any principle on trust, no matter with what respect that principle is surrounded." while fathers Vassily and Nikolai, and Pavel represent the older staid and traditional figure of Russia pre Revolution. Love and marriage enters the picture and causes much confusion and re-thinking of old and new values. Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev was born in Orel province, Russia, in 1818. The Turgenevs were wealthy landowners, and when Ivan's father died his domineering and abusive mother oversaw the running of the farms and their serfs. After attending University of St. Petersburg, Turgenev moved to Germany and entered University of Berlin. There he concentrated on studies of history and the philosophy chiefly of Georg W. F. Hegel (1770-1831). After a time working as a civil servant he met French singer Pauline Viardot with whom he had a lifelong affair. He set up residence in France and it was there that he began writing in earnest. Travelling often between Europe and Russia, Turgenev was arrested and imprisoned for suspicious revolutionary activities.
