Bill Moyers Rewind: Barbara Tuchman (1988)
In 1988, Bill Moyers sat down with noted historian Barbara Tuchman to discuss politicians, advertising and whether our country has learned from the Vietnam War. An advocate of the notion that it's worth knowing where we've been, Ms. Tuchman, throughout her distinguished career, examined the changes in America since the days of Washington, Adams and Jefferson. Now almost 20 years after their conversation, on the brink of a new Presidential election, Ms. Tuchman's words still ring true and inform the discussion of how technology has affected American politics and the candidates we elect.

A Distant Mirror: Comparing the 14th Century to the 20th
Paula Stiles Nov 6, 2006
"A Distant Mirror", by Barbara Tuchman, continues to be a very popular book on medieval history. But how accurate is it?
Barbara Tuchman's " A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century " (1978), a study of the 14th century in Western Europe (mainly northern France) with a strong focus on the societal aftereffects of the Black Death, is one of the most popular books on medieval history ever. It's also one of the most excoriated works by medieval historians ever. I'm not sure that it deserves that kind of singular bad press from academia (surely, Gibbon and Scott are both still worthy of a few good slaps), but it has become a bit dated and does make some sweeping generalizations about medieval life that don't fly now.

The March of Folly: From Troy to Vietnam
Tuchman, Barbara W.
The Folio Society: London 1984
Date finished:
This book looks at cases where rulers and governments have pursued foolish courses of action despite all arguments to the contrary and all indications of disaster. The introduction uses the Trojan Horse and Cortez's defeat of Montezuma as examples of folly. Tuchman defines folly as a policy pursued despite contemporary arguments to the contrary, so policies only condemned in hindsight don't qualify. Other conditions in Tuchman's definition are that a reasonable alternative course of action was available and that the misguided policy was pursued by different people over time. The three parts of the book contemplate different examples of folly. The first example is the corruption and power-mongering of the Renaissance popes, whose neglect of the Church and disdain for public unhappiness led to the Lutheran schism. This section is full of scurrilous anecdotes and is quite entertaining. The same can be said of the second section, on the British government's wooden-headed attempts to enforce taxation on the American colonies, taxation that couldn't be effectively collected and ended up sparking the American Revolution. Both sections are clear and enjoyable overviews of the course of events that never get lost in minute details. I really enjoyed these two sections; like Tuchman's

Tuchman, Barbara W.
February 1984 A noted historian, Tuchman has combined meticulous scholarship with a highly readable style to win two Pulitzer prizes for history. After graduating from Radcliffe College with a B.A. degree, she worked as a research assistant for the Institute of Pacific Relations in New York and Tokyo and then as editorial assistant, correspondent in Spain, and free-lance writer for the Nation. During World War II she worked at the Office of War Information, handling Far Eastern news. Her first Pulitzer came in 1963, for her best-selling book on the beginning of World War I, The Guns of August; the second was awarded in 1972, for Stilwell and the American Experience in China, 1911-45. Her other books include The Zimmerman Telegram, The Proud Tower: A Portrait of the World before the War, 1890-1914, A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century, The March of Folly, and The First Salute.

Barbara Tuchman's Comments on Israel
Moshe Yegar
Although Barbara Tuchman never devoted a book to Jewish or Israeli history, her perspective on these topics can be gleaned from four articles on the subject and from some passages in her other writings. In one article she sought the historical meaning of the Nazis' war against the European Jews. The silence of the democratic countries shocked her no less than the crimes themselves. In 1966, Tuchman visited Israel for the first time, and she described her impressions in a lengthy article. Her second visit took place a year later and coincided with the Six Day War, and her detailed and systematic impressions were published in September 1967. Tuchman's writings about Israel reveal a high level of sympathy for the young state and sensitivity to its achievements and problems.
Introduction
The American Jewish historian Barbara Tuchman was born in New York City on 30 January 1912 and died in Connecticut on 6 February 1989. She was the granddaughter of Henry Morgenthau, Sr., who was U.S. ambassador in Istanbul from 1913 to 1916. When World War I broke out and the Turks began to persecute the Jewish community in Palestine, Morgenthau helped mobilize aid to the beleaguered Yishuv. Differences of opinion that developed between him and Chaim Weizmann and some other Zionist leaders in the United States transformed him into an anti-Zionist. His son, Henry Jr., Barbara's uncle, was secretary of the treasury during World War II. From 1947 to 1953, he was head of the United Jewish Appeal and chairman of the Board of the Hebrew University. He was also among the initiators of Israel Bonds and its chairman from 1951 to 1954.
