For Tortured Russian Poet, a Life of Drama and Despair

By CARYN JAMES Published: December 11, 2007 The Russian poet Marina Tsvetayeva endured and indulged in a life of high drama. One of her young daughters died of starvation during the famine that followed the Russian Revolution. A lover of both men and women, she followed her White Russian husband into exile in Europe, then returned after he was accused of changing sides and spying for the Soviets. Impoverished and spied on by Soviet secret agents, she hanged herself in 1941. Skip to next paragraph Enlarge This Image Jonathan Slaff In life, Tsvetayeva was not a great beauty. But here she is glamour itself, portrayed by the throaty-voiced actress Yelena Romanova in a long, glossy wig, enormous false eyelashes and a black velvet dress, a performance of rolling eyes and oversize gestures.

Her Romantic pre-revolutionary verse was haunted by a pained presentiment of the approaching upheavals and horror in the face of all-pervading violence to come. The first years after the 1917 Bolshevik revolution plunged the poet into abject poverty. She emigrated in 1922 but followed her daughter and husband back to the Soviet Union in 1939. Her near and dear were arrested the same year. Negligibly few poems came from her pen while in the U.S.S.R. She made a living as a translator. Crushed by fate, Tsvetayeva committed suicide in 1941."
Note
The sounds of Russian poetry and the formal use of rhyme and meter can never be captured in English. Tsvetaeva presents a particularly difficult problem to the translator because her reputation rests precisely on the aural values of her verse.

from the collection MY PUSHKIN
translated by Helen Szamuely THE POET AND THE TSAR (1)
The nether world -
the Tsars' hall.
- Who is that unbending
marble chap?
So majestic
in a golden mantle:
the pitiful gendarme
of Pushkin's glory. He disparaged the author. He trimmed his work. The bestial butcher of the Polish land. Look more carefully. Do NOT forget: The singer's assassin: Tsar Nicholas the First. THE TSAR AND THE POET (2) Oh yes, the drum did sound before the troubled regiment when we buried our leader. The tsar's teeth provided the drum roll for the dead singer. Such an honour - no place for close friends. At his head and his feet, to the right and to the left - Atte-e-ention! Police chests and police mugs. How surprising - a supervised boy unto the last resting place. It really is something, something like: this honour - so honourable - too much so. And the people can see: contrary to gossip the ruler cares about the poet. What an honour, such an honour, a super- honour, yes, an honour - the devil's own honour.

Poem by Marina Tsvetayeva for Parted Lovers (trans Elaine Feinstein)
I leave for a writing retreat in North Wales tomorrow where I will keep this poem in mind.
No one has taken anything away
there is a sweetness for me in being apart.
I kiss you now across the many
hundreds of miles that separate us. I know: our gifts are unequal, which is
What can my untutored verse
matter to you, a young Derzhavin? For your terrible flight I give you blessing.
Fly, then, young eagle! You
have stared into the sun, without blinking.
Can my young gaze be too heavy for you? No one has ever stared more
separating years. Marina Tsvetayeva, Selected Poems Zoe Brigley 21 Jul 2006 Tags: Favourite Poems Comments (0) Report a problem

"Anyone desiring a quiet [non-public] life has done badly to be born in the twentieth century."
Leon Trotsky "The fundamental difference between the liberal and the illiberal outlook is that the former regards all questions as open to discussion and all opinions as open to a greater or lesser measure of doubt, while the latter holds in advance that certain opinions are absolutely unquestionable, and that no argument against them must be allowed be heard. What is curious about this position is the belief that if impartial investigation were permitted it would lead men to the wrong conclusion, and that ignorance is, therfore, the only safeguard against terror. This point of view cannot be accepted by any man who wishes reason rather than prejudice to govern human action." Bertrand Russell

Russia This Question Is Answered: digg_skin = 'compact'; digg_window = 'new'; What do you know about the Russian poet Marina Tsvetayeva? 10 Apr 2007 22:39 Report Marina Tsvetayeva, who was popular in the name of Ivanovna was a Russian poet of the 1900s. She was born on 8th October, 1892 in Moscow. Ivanovna spent most of her youth in Russia. She left Russia at the age of 16 years and went to the Sorbonne in Paris for further studies.
In the year of 1910 her first poetry collection was brought out. Ivanovna’s vision on the Russian revolution, glorify the anti-Bolshevik resistance. Her husband was a part of that.
From 1922 to 1939 she used to live mostly in Paris as she lived abroad from Russia. Her varied works of writing including poetry gave the reflection of nostalgia for her motherland. “Tsar-devitsa” or “Tsar-Maiden” in English which was published in 1922 was her best among all of her poetries. It was not actually a collection of poetry but a long verse fairy tale collection. Marina Tsvetayeva or Ivanovna was separated form her husband and daughter as well as isolated from her friends. She died in 31st August, 1941 in Yelabuga. Though she was little known outside Russia, but still she is regarded as the most excellent 20th century poet in Russia.
