Russian poet. After spending most of her youth in Moscow, she began studies at the Sorbonne in Paris at age 16. She published her first poetry collection in 1910. Her verses on the Russian Revolution glorify the anti-Bolshevik resistance, of which her husband was a part. She lived abroad from 1922 to 1939, mostly in Paris, writing varied works including poetry that increasingly reflected nostalgia for her homeland. Many of her best and most typical poetic qualities are displayed in the long verse fairy tale Tsar-devitsa document.writeln(AAMB2); More on "Marina Tsvetayeva" from the 32 Volume Tsvetayeva, Marina Ivanovna - married name Marina Ivanovna Efron Russian poet whose verse is distinctive for its staccato rhythms, originality, and directness and who, though little known outside Russia, is considered one of the finest 20th-century poets in the Russian language. To Mother
In the old Strauss waltz for the first time We had listened to your quiet call, Since then all the living things are alien And the knocking of the clock consoles. We, like you, are gladly greeting sunsets, And are drunk on nearness of the end. All, with which on better nights we're wealthy Is put in the hearts by your own hand. Bowing to a child's dreams with no tire. (Only crescent looked in them indeed Without you)! You have led your kids past Bitter lifetime of the thoughts and deeds. From the early age the sad one's close to us, Laughter bores and home we left behind.. Our ship not in good times left the harbor And it sails by will of every wind! Azure isle of childhood is paling, On the deck of ship we stand alone. It appears, oh mother, to your daughters You've left an inheritance of woe.

The street awakens. She looks, exhausted With the mute windows' sullen eyes, On sleepy faces, red from the cold, That with thoughts chase the stubborn sleep away. The blackened trees with rime are covered - With trace mysterious of the night's fun, In gleaming brocade sad ones are standing, Just like the dead the alive among. The gray coat mingles, trampled upon, The forage-cup with a wreathe, a bored look, And the red arms, pressed to the ears, And the black apron with the tied books. The street awakens. She looks, unpleasant With mute windows' sullen eyes, it would seem. To sleep, in a happy thought be forgotten, What life seems to us, this is a dream!

In the following, I intend to elucidate the significance and scope of this epigraph as it appears in its Russian context in the poems at the end of Die Niemandsrose printed in Russian and in the cyrillic alphabet seems to be a Russian sentence, but in fact, it was never spoken in Russian in this way. Prefacing the poem "Und mit dem Buch aus Tarussa," there is no simple way for a German reader to understand it, since the Russian language was by no means widespread in the West Germany of the early sixties. On the contrary, it seems that this indecipherable epigraph was put there to create a meaning of its own, a meaning which relates to all those themes alluded to in the poem itself. As we see, it refers, among other things, to Paul Celan’s numerous translations from Russian:

  • Tsvetayeva, Marina Ivanovna Russian poet and prose writer. Born in Moscow, the daughter of a professor of art and a gifted pianist, she spent much of her childhood in western Europe. She published her poetry of 1907 – 9 privately as Evening Album ( 1910 ) with great success. In 1912 she married Sergei Yakovlevich Efron , who became an officer in the tsarist army, and published a second book of poetry. She totally rejected the October Revolution and wrote a cycle of poems The Encampment of the Whites (Munich 1957 ; English trans. Robin Kemball , 1980 ), glorifying the White Army. At the end of the Civil War she got permission to join her husband (whom she had thought dead) in Prague, and in 1922 much of her poetry appeared in Moscow and Berlin, consolidating her reputation.
