Tsvetaeva, Marina Ivanovna
Marina Ivanovna Tsvetaeva was born in Moscow on 9 October (26 September old style; she preferred the old calendar all her life), 1892. Her father, Ivan Vladimirovich Tsvetaev, was a professor of art history at the University of Moscow. Late in life he founded the Alexander III Museum, which is now known as the Pushkin Museum. Tsvetaeva's mother, Maria Alexandrovna Meyn, was Ivan's second wife. She had musical talent but had been frustrated in her dream of becoming a great concert pianist. Marina had two half-siblings, Valeria and Andrei, who were the children of Ivan's deceased first wife, Varvara Dmitrievna Ilovaisky (daughter of the historian Dmitri Ilovaisky). She also had a full sister, Anastasia, who was born in 1894.
In 1903 Tsvetaeva's mother contracted tuberculosis. Because it was believed that a change in climate could help cure the disease, the family travelled abroad until shortly before her death in 1906. Marina and Anastasia attended schools in Italy, Switzerland and Germany.
After her mother's death, Tsvetaeva gave up the music lessons she hated and concentrated on poetry. Her first major work was a translation of Edmond Rostand's L'Aiglon; it has not been preserved. Tsvetaeva studied by herself in Paris in 1909, and then attended a series of gymnasiums in Russia, without academic success; by now her sole, consuming interest was in poetry.

Marina Tsvetaeva The Demesne of the Swans
I'm glad that I long not for you That the heavy sphere of Earth Does not flow under our feet I am glad that it's allowed to be funny spoiledand waste no words for games; And not to be chocked by a wave of blushing When our sleeves touch ever so slightly. I also like that in my presence undisturbed Your arms surround another woman, That you don't ask me to burn in poisoned Flames when I am kissing not you; That, sweetheart, you don't call my sweet name Any day nor night, at any time, That in the calm of an Eastern Church They'll never sing for us: hallelujah! I thank you with my heart and hand For yourunknown to you!love of me, For my peace at night, for the seldomness Of our meetings at the sunset hour; For our non-walks under the moon, For the sun not over our heads, For your longingalas!not for me, For my longingalas!not for you.
You're me in the way. I used to Walk so, without looking up. Stop, passerby! Don't refuse to. I beg and I pray you stop! You'll read, as you lay the glowing

Tsvetaeva's disciplined poetry arose from her own contradictory personality, eccentricities and highly controlled use of language. Among her innumerable themes were female sexuality and the tension between women's private emotions and their public roles. Mentally she lived in the 1920s and 1930s because of her political views. "I am nowhere.
I've vanished in no land.

A prolific writer whose strong staccato rhythms became her signature, she would often fuse classical myth and modern poetry, drawing on the raw materials of her own life as experienced during the Russian Revolution. Under the dual direction of Romma and Rochaix, the play gives us, at last, a sober consideration of Tsvetaeva, and encapsulates her final days with gracefulness and honesty. Whether you like the famous Russian poet or not, she had a full set of attitudes toward society and life in the early 20th century, and her potent art remains her legacy.

    Marina Tsvetaeva, 'Insomnia 3'
Monday, 12. March 2007, 13:03:17 translation tsvetaeva poetry russian After a sleepless night the body gets weaker,
It becomes dear and not yours - and nobody's.
Just like a seraph you smile to people
And arrows moan in the slow arteries.
After a sleepless night the arms get weaker
And deeply equal to you are the friend and foe.
Smells like Florence in the frost, and in each
Sudden sound is the whole rainbow.
Tenderly light the lips, and the shadow's golden
Near the sunken eyes. Here the night has sparked
This brilliant likeness - and from the dark night Only just one thing - the eyes - are growing dark. Marina Tsvetaeva Insomnia ', from: Psyche (1923), translation Ilya Shambat. Zbigniew Herbert, 'Heart' On beauty and bellyaching

Her husband fought on the side of the Tsar and then in the White Guard attempting to restore the line of Tsars. Marina, her husband, and their children moved to Paris to live among the Russian expatriate community there, but they were eventually shunned because her husband was thought to be a Soviet spy which apparently turned out to be true. Throughout this time, Marina desperately struggled to feed her family, sometimes having to resort to theft. They later moved back to Soviet Russia, where her husband was eventually arrested and killed, despite his earlier collaboration. Marina Tsvetaeva committed suicide in 1941.
